LABORATORY EXERCISE NO.1

DRAINAGE

Name: ____________ROSELYN M. LORENZANA____________ Year& Sec: ___BSAEn 5M___

Date: ____March 25, 2021____

1. Given:
Rectangular corn seed production Hydraulic conductivity = 0.8 cm/hr
Slope (S) = 0.005 PET = 6 mm/day
Soil = firm loam Area (A) = 400 m x 200 m = 10,000 m2 = 8 ha
Depth of river = 8m Root zone depth of corn (Rz) = 1.0 m
Drainable porosity (f) = 0.05 Tractive force = 0.070 kg/m2
Depth to impermeable layer (Ho) = 5m 80% design of rainfall = 140 mm/day
Rate of recharge = 0.02 cm/hr

Required:

Design of combine surface and subsurface drainage system for the area, use open ditch
only. Assume other data relative to your design and cite the references.

Solution:
 Compute for drainage coefficient (Dc)
Dc = (rate of fall of water table) (porosity)
Assume rate of fall of water table (i) = 0.9 m/day
Dc = (0.9 m/day) (1000mm/m) (0.05)
Dc = 45 mm/day

 Compute for the size drain (d)

Manning’s coefficient (n) of firm soil for lower = 0.018
Reference: https://www.researchgate.net/figure/alues-of-roughness-for-different-
types-of-bed-material_tbl5_270340676

d = 51.7 (Dc x A x n)0.325 (S)-0.1875

d = 51.7 ( 45 mm/day x 8 ha x 0.018)0.325 (0.005)-0.1875
d = 256.27 mm

 Compute for flow rate (q)

q = Dc x A
q = (45 mm/day) (8 ha) (10,000m2/ha) (1 m/1000 mm) (1000 li/m3) (1 day/24 hrs)

(1 hr/ 3600 sec)

q = 41.67 li/sec

 Compute for drain spacing

S2 = 4K (Ho2)
R

S2 = 4 (0.8cm/hr) (5 m2)
0.02 cm/hr
S = 4,000 m2
2

S = 63.24 m

 Compute for design discharge of outlet

Q = AV = De x L x k ꓥh/l
From Figure 14.8 SWCE ; S = 63.24 m; D = 5.0 m; De = 3.0 m
Assume hydraulic gradient (i) = 0.06 m/m
Q = (3 m) (400 m) (0.8 cm/hr) (1 m/100 cm) (1 hr /3600 sec) (1000 li/ m3) (0.5 m/m)
Q = 1.33 li/sec
