Double shear test setup

Approximate ultimate shear strength = 0.75*ultimate tensile strength (1)

For the applied axial load ‘P’, each of the fixed plates produces a reactive shear load of P/2.
Hence average shear stress is given by

τavg = (P/2) / cross section area (CSA) of the bolt (2)

Bolt has circular cross section hence CSA = (π/4)*d2 (3)

therefore, 𝜏𝑎𝑣𝑔 = 𝜋 2 (4)

∗𝑑

Ultimate shear strength (USS) = ultimate load / 2*CSA (5)

Ultimate load = USS * 2 * CSA (6)
