Experiment No. 1: Tension Test of a Mild Steel Specimen

1.In a tensile test of Mild Steel specimen, the obtained ultimate strength is 1.2 times the yield strength of the
specimen. The force corresponding to the yield strength is: 15  ( last three digit of the student number ) kN .
1/9

For the specimen with initial diameter of 8 mm, calculate the ultimate strength of the material. The strain at
fracture for the specimen is 0.2 (mm/mm). Calculate the modulus of toughness of the specimen using both the
yield and ultimate strength. [5]

Experiment No. 2: Hardness Test

2.Calculate the Brinell Hardness Number (kgf/mm2) for an indentation in a material obtained by 10 mm high
carbon steel ball with a compressive force of 3000 kg. The indentation diameter d is expressed as follows:
d=(3.00+(Last three significant digits of your Student ID)/100) mm [5]

Experiment No. 3: Study of Beams

_________________________________________________________________________________________

3.The length and diameter of a MS cantilever beam are 1 m and 4 mm respectively. In a given experiment, one
finds the slope of the load-deflection curve to be N/mm. Then find
the modulus of elasticity of the beam. For the given material of the cantilever beam, does the calculated value of
the modulus of elasticity justified? Comment on your answer. [5]

Experiment No. 4: Slender Column Test

4. A circular long column of length 40X mm and diameter of 5 mm was subjected to compressive load under
different end conditions. When load was 15Y kg, the column showed instability. Determine the modulus of
elasticity of the material of the column for the end conditions mentioned below.
(e.g. your student ID: 17***XY) [5]
i) Both hinged end- hinged end
ii) Both fixed-fixed end
iii) One hinged end- one fixed end
iv) One fixed end- one free end

Experiment No. 5: Compression Test of Wooden Block

5. Explain the steps used in finding the Young’s modulus from the given data in this experiment using a
graphical sketch. [5]

Experiment No. 6: Direct Shear Test of Metal

[ USE LAST 3 DIGITS OF YOUR ROLL IN THE BLANK FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS]

6(i). Differentiate direct shear and torsional shear. [2]

6(ii). Calculate the value of shear stresses and also draw the shear planes for the following two cases: case
(a) and case (b). [3]

Experiment No. 7 Impact Test

7. 1. During an impact test, distance between the center of rotation and center of striker is 0.825 m and the
weight of pendulum is 20.5 Kg. If the angle of rotation of the pendulum is 13X⁰ and 12Y⁰ for the cases without
specimen and with specimen, respectively, find the amount of energy absorbed by the specimen in this impact
test. Consider X, Y as digits from your student ID (e.g. your student ID: 17100YX).
[5]

Experiment No. 8. Hydrostatic Pressure Test of Thin Walled Cylinder

8. A cylindrical pressure vessel of thickness 2Z mm and diameter 45X mm is subjected to an internal pressure
of 5 MPa. Determine the Girth/Hoop stress. (your Student ID: 17**XYZ).
[5]

Experiment No. 9: Torsional Shear Test of Metal

9. A brittle metal is taken under torsion test. Data table for the test is given below: [5]
Gauge length of the specimen, L = {58+log10(Your Student ID’s last three digit)}mm
Diameter of the specimen, d= {5.80+ 0.1×log10{Your Student ID’s last three digit)}mm
Observation No. Torque, T (N-m) Angle of Twist,𝜽
(Degree)
1 15.6 12
2 16.9 15

i) Calculate the maximum torsional shearing stresses of the observations.

ii) Calculate the torsional shearing strains of the observations.
iii) Calculate the modulus of rigidity of the metal.
iv) Draw possible failure plane of the metal. Briefly explain the reason of your answer..
Experiment No. 10. Helical Spring Test
10. A Helical Compression Spring, shown in the figure is tested and the test data is given below: [5]
Your Student ID: 1***XYZ (e.g. for 1***029, X=0, Y=2, Z=9)
Free length of the Spring, L = 127. XYZ mm
Spring Wire diameter, d = 7. YZ mm
Outer diameter of spring, Do= 75. XY mm
Modulus of Rigidity of Spring Material, G = 1ZX GPa
Slope of the Load-Deflection Curve = 18. XY N/mm.
Maximum Applied Load = 80 kg.

Find.
1. Theoretical Stiffness
2. Spring Index
3. Experimental Stiffness
4. Maximum Shear Stress
5. Modulus of Rigidity from experiment

(assume reasonable value of any missing data if necessary)
