Preparation:

1. The modern music therapy history starts in the 18th century. In 1789, an unknown author
published an article entitled “Music Psychically Considered” – what might be the first article
on music therapy. In 1891 the Guild of St. Cecilia used music with a large number of patients in
London hospitals. The emergence of art therapy as a profession arose independently and
simultaneously in the United States and Europe. The term “art therapy” was coined in 1942 by
British artist Adrian Hill, who discovered the healthful benefits of painting and drawing while
recovering from tuberculosis.

3. Process
• Develop a climate of acceptance
− This puts your resident at ease – they know you are friendly and will not
embarrass them or hurt them in any way. You must establish a trust factor.
• Bridge to the real world
− This is where you develop your bounce questions to eventually have the residents
state what the topic of the session is.
• Bounce questions!
− Bounce questions can be linear or non-linear:
• Linear: These questions must be logically associated and lead to a pre-determined topic
or idea. Each response will lead to the next question.
• Non-linear: each response will be the same

− This is where you begin to ask questions related to the topic (Fruit) and –
generally you will have 10 to 15 questions ready.

− These questions relate to the topic and work the resident may have engaged in
during their life:

3) How much does a peck of apples cost?
