[Dia 1 – Voorkant
The Nuke is the most powerful weapon ever created by mankind. It ended the second world war
and is the cause of a lot of tensions between countries. In this presentation we’ll tell you more
about it.
[Dia 2 – Index
We’ll be talking about the following topics:

- What is a nuke?
- How do they work?
- What were their uses in history?
- And the most powerful weapon ever created by mankind: The Tsar Bomba

[Dia 3 – What is a nuke?

So what is a nuke exactly?
They are explosives caused by a atomic reaction.
Nukes are terrifying weapons. They´re powerful enough to wipe out an entire city with a single
warhead.
There are two types of nukes, each with their own type of reaction.
First there is an atomic bomb, which works by splitting an atom (fission). Then there is the
hydrogen bomb which works through Fusion.
[ Dia 4 – How do they work?
The explosion of an Atom bomb is caused by the energy stored within an atom rapidly escaping.
When an atom is split, its energy quickly releases and causes an explosion. The Uranium atom
stores a huge amount of energy, so it’s perfect for an atom bomb. An atom is split by putting a lot
of pressure on it, the more pressure you have, the more atoms you can split and the bigger the
explosion gets. This was the first type of nuclear weapons.

The second type of nuclear weapon uses Fusion. Also known as the Hydrogen Bomb. Hydrogen
Bombs also work by putting pressure on an atom but, unlike Atom Bombs, temperature plays a
role with the detonation of a Hydrogen Bomb. When the temperature reaches a sweet spot it
explodes optimally. To reach that temperature you need an enormous amount of heat, the best
way to do that is to split an atom within the hydrogen bomb. So basically: A Hydrogen Bomb
uses an Atom Bomb as a detonator.
[Dia 5 – Uses in history
The second world war was ended with the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by United
States Nukes that were nicknamed ‘The Fat Man” and the “Little Boy”. After the attack on Pearl
Harbor, the United States responded with a single devastating attack on two Japanese cities
forcing Japan to surrender. It was a response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
During the Cold War, tension grew between Russia and America. They were scared the other
would grow too strong with Oil Resources, space exploration and Nuclear Weapons. It slowly
fizzled out and was eventually ended with weapon-agreements between the two countries.

[Dia 6 – Tsar Bomba

During the Cold War, the Sovjets developed the strongest nuke ever; the Tsar Bomba. Luckily it
was only used in tests and never used in warfare, but what if it did?
What if they dropped it right here on this school?
It would go something like this:
The bad news is that the bomb would damage roughly a quarter of the Netherlands. The biggest
orange circle is the Thermal radiation field, which causes cancer and will instantly give you 3 rd
degree burn wounds, it will burn off your pain nerves, so the good news is you won’t feel a thing.

The bigger blue circle is the air blast radius, the blast from the explosion is strong enough to
destroy concrete buildings. The smaller green circle is the fireball and the highest radiation
zone. There is no chance of surviving here. If the fireball doesn’t incinerate you, you’ll die from
radiation within a few days.
