Bren Veziroglu submitted a 250-word class contribution summarizing the article "A review of energy sources and energy management system in electric vehicles" by Tie, S. F., & Tan, C. W. The summary discusses that electric vehicles are a promising solution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, which account for over 30% of emissions globally. While interest in electric vehicles is growing in the US, the review suggests that electric vehicles are a viable alternative to combustion engines in reducing emissions and hybrid electric vehicles can act as an interim step to fully electric vehicles.

Brief Summary (250-word max)
Global warming is a nearly universally recognized threat to our civilization, whose importance is hard to overstate. Many potential solutions have been proposed to combat global warming, and one of our main lines of defense is decreasing the global greenhouse gas emissions. As the transportation sector accounts for approximately 33.7% of greenhouse gas emissions, switching from fossil fuel based internal combustion engines (ICE) to electric vehicles (EV) represents an extremely promising solution. Interest in EV seems to be on the rise, as US sales of EV's have increased from 274,555 in 2010 to 393,938 in 2013. This review suggests that EV’s are a viable alternative to the high Greenhouse gas emission and low drive train efficiency of conventional ICE vehicles, and that hybrid electric vehicles are a valid interim step to fully electric vehicles.
