cognition and igf-1 levels in elder women who live in areas with high air pollution. International
Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 17(17), 6203.

Brief Summary (250-word max)

Regular physical activity is known to have many benefits for older adults, including
increased physical and cognitive health and enhanced social engagement. The authors
therefore hypothesized that interventions to prevent the loss of muscle mass and increase
muscular strength can help reduce cognitive and physical limitations in older adults.

This study looked at the effects of a resistance training program on IGF-1 and cognitive
status in elderly women with mild cognitive impairment who lived in areas of high air
pollution. 157 women participated in the study for 24 months, divided into 4 groups;
Active clean air, active pollution, sedentary clean air, or sedentary pollution. There were
no differences between groups at the start of the intervention in any of the variables
measured. The clean air group were health center patients in Vina del mar, Chile (PM 2.5
12.8) , and the pollution group were health center patients in Pudahuel, Chile (PM2.5
29.2)

The active clean air group showed the greatest increases in strength, cognitive tests, and
IGF-1, while the sedentary pollution group showed the greatest decreases in all variables.
Many between group differences were statistically significant
