Designing simple jigs

Planning prior to design and
construction of any fixture or jig
• For convenience of understanding, let a
typical machining task be taken up as
follows:
• Task: a fixture or jig has to be designed
and built for drilling a through hole in pre-
machined mild steel rode at a given
distance from one end face as shown
below:
Planning for design(schematic layout

• Steps
• Whether fixture or jig? JIG
• Positioning & orientation of the blank in jig
– Horizontal axis as shown
• Locating the bank in the jig
– Using v block
– Adjustable pin for axial location
Planning steps for design of the jig-cont..
• Supporting the blank(against forces) on V-
block with recess
Cont..
• Clamping-need to be easy, quick,strong,rigid&
stable
• Tool guidance,consistently perfect
locating,ejection
