CHAPTER IV

FINDING AND DISCUSSION

This chapter represents the finding of the study and discussion. The findings

are the answer of the statement problem in the previous chapter of Harry

Stanford's murder in Morning, Noon and Night Novel by Sidney Sheldon. And

discussion is about to interpret the finding based on the related theories.

4.1 Finding

There are three parts of finding that related to the problems in the previous

chapter. The first statement problem is who the suspected as murderers, and

following by the second problem is what the causes of the murder and the last is

how to reveal the murderer.

4.1.1 The Suspected Murderers

In this case, there are some people who are suspected as Harry Stanford’s

murder. They are Dmitri Kaminsky the bodyguard of Harry Stanford and Captain

Vacarrothe captain of the yacht. They both were in the crime scene when the

murder happened. Harry’s children are also suspected as the murderers. They are

suspected as murderers based on investigation of Steve and because of their

trauma, hate and vengeful toward his father. They got unpleasant and suffering

childhood traumas.Below are the people who were in the crime scene when the

murder happened.

4.1.1.1 Dmitri Kaminsky

Dmitri Kaminsky is Harry Stanford's bodyguard. He was with him in the

incident that killed Harry. He was also an eyewitness who could explain whatt

happened in the crime scene. Captain Vacarro said to the Capitaine Durer who

investigated them about Dmitri as an eyewitness of the accident.

He turned to Dmitri Kaminsky.

“He was an eyewitness. Perhaps he should explain it.” (Page: 46)

The quotation above described the involvement Dmitri Kaminsky. He was

in the crime scene as an eyewitness which was the leading to the suspected of

Harry Stanford's murder.

The other relation of Dmitri in the crime scene was in the following

statement. He explained it to Capitaine Durer what had happened about the

chronology of Harry Stanford's murder.

'… Our yacht was caught in the storm last night. It was
very bad. He asked me to give him a massage to relax him.
Afterward, he asked me to get him a sleeping pill. They
were in the bathroom. When I returned, he was standing
out in the veranda, at the railing. The storm was tossing
the yacht around. He had been holding some papers in his
hand. One of them flew away, and he reaches out to grab
for it, lost his balance, and fell over the side. I raced to
save him, but there was nothing I could do. I called for
help. Captain Vacarro immediately stopped the ship, and
though the captain's heroic efforts, we found him. But it
was too late. He had drowned.” (Page: 46-47)

From this statement above, it concluded that Dmitri Kaminsky was there in

the crime scene. He knew the detail because Dmitri was with Harry before he was

died. The only eyewitness that made him the possible suspected of Harry

Stanford's death.

4.1.1.2 Captain Vacarro

He is the captain of Blue Sky, a yacht that has made Harry Stanford drown

and got killed. Captain Vacarro was in the crime scene. He has been questioned by

Capitaine Durer. The quotation is below.

“Tell me, please, exactly what occurred.”

Captain Vacarro said, “I'm not sure exactly. I didn't see it
happen. . . .”(Page: 46)

The statement above told that Captain Vacarro was not sure what had

hapened. But it didn't leave the fact that he was in the crime scene. Back at home,

Steve Sloane did the investigation toward Stanford's children about the

involvement of the murder. It leaded to Tyler and Woody Stanford as stated

below.

4.1.1.3 Tyler Stanford

Steve Sloane is Harry Stanford's attorney; he has been ordered to

investigate the murder. The investigation leaded to Harry Stanford's children. He

was Tyler Stanford. Tyler has been stated as the suspected of the murderer. The

statement of Steve is below.

“.. So I started checking up on you. Dmitri was killed in

Australia, but the Australian police found your telephone
number in his pocket. You used him to murder your
father....' (Page: 368-369)

After knowing the statement by Steve Sloane above, the conclusion was

reasonable to state that Tyler Stanford had a conspiracy to murder his father. He

used Dmitri Kaminsky as his father bodyguard to smooth his conspiracy of

murder.

4.1.1.4 Woody Stanford

Steve Sloane investigated Woody Stanford as the suspect of the murder.

He found something that interested him as follow:

“.. Woody interests me. I'm pretty sure he 's on drug, and
that's an expensive habit.”(Page: 344)
“Drugs are expensive. Woody isn't working. He needs
money, “ (Page: 362)

The statement above told that Steve Sloane suspected Woody's

involvement about the murder. He was sure that Woody was on drug, and he

would need a lot of money to get it.

Another proof of Woody as the suspected was when Steve Sloane founded

in the following statement.

“I don't think your father fell off his yacht. I believe that
Woody had your father murdered. Peggy's brother could
have arranged that too. I'm told he has connections with the
Marseilles mafia. They could easily have paid a crew
member to do it.” (Page: 362)

The statement above told how sure Steve Sloane was about Woody as the

suspected of the murder. Peggy is Woody's wife. Her brother had a connection to

a criminal. Steve suspected them made a conspiracy to murder his father. It

would be easy for them to pay a crew member to do the murder.

4.1.2 The Reasons of Harry Stanford’s Murder

Harry Stanford had bad behavior. He treated his children badly. It was

caused them hatred and had a vengeance toward him. Harry also did humiliate

them and put them through hell. On top of that, Harry always made his wealth as

bait to control his children. And then he intended to change the will by remove his

children asthe heir of his wealth.

4.1.2.1 Harry Stanford treated his children badly

The children suffered trauma of Harry Stanford's behavior toward them.

Tyler Stanford has the most suffering childhood trauma than his other sibling. The

following statement below stated.

“So, you're going to become a lawyer, huh? I suppose you

think I'll give you a job with Stanford Enterprise. Well,
forget it. I wouldn't let you within a mile of it!” (Page: 74)

The statement of Harry Stanford above told that He did not care about

Tyler like the relationship between a father and his child in common. And even he

did not support him about Tyler wanted to become a lawyer. More even Harry

would not let Tyler join his company.

Another bad Harry Stanford's behavior toward Tyler was when he

interrupted him in the middle of trial. His father called him because his staff was

stealing. It made Tyler could not keep him from became mad. As the stated below

“You aren't going to disappoint me again, are you, Tyler?

Maybe I should talk to Fitzgerald about some changes in
my will.” and there was the carrot again. The money.
(Page: 191)

From the statement above, it could be explained that how bad he treated

Tyler. His father was using his will to control him as a bait to make Tyler did

what he wanted to. It made Tyler as rabbit and his share as a carrot.

4.1.2.2 Harry Wanted to change the will

The humiliation and Harry Stanford's behavior toward his children was not

the only reason of the murder that had happened. Harry was also planning to

change his will. He was planning to wipe his children out of his legacy. As the

following statement below

“I'm with your father on his yacht. He just called his

attorney. He's meeting him in Boston to change his will”
(Page: 191)

The quotation of Dmitry toward Tyler above told that Harry Stanford

wanted to change the will. He is going to meet his attorney in Boston to change

the will.

Other paragraph toldabout Tyler know that Harry wanted to change the

will is stated below.

And on Monday Father is planning to change the will.The

bastard is going to take it away from us!After all we've gone
through. Those billions belong to us. (Page: 205-206)

The paragraph of Tyler above showed that Harry was planning to change

the will by taking it away from his children. Tyler will not let that happen after

what they had gonr through.

4.1.3 The Ways of Revealing the Murder

There are some ways to conduct how to reveal the murder that happened

to Harry Stanford. By Steve Sloane investigation it could be founded the ways of

the murder, and by the statement of Tyler Stanford it could explain how he did the

murder, and in addition the arrested of Tyler Stanford made how the case was

closed to reveal the murder.

4.1.3.1 Steve Sloane's Investigation

Steve Sloane was Harry Stanford's attorney for his firm. When Harry

Stanford was dead, He had been ordered to investigate the murder. Steve

investigated the children including Woody and Tyler. The proof he founded lead

to Tyler Stanford. The statement is stated below.

“Woody wasn't up to planning anything as clever as this,

so I started checking up on you. Dmitri Kaminsky was
killed in Australia, but the Australian police found your
telephone number in his pocket. You used him to murder
your father.” (Page: 368-369)

The statement above indicated Tyler as the master plan of the murder,

because Woody was not smart as his bother Tyler. Tyler used Dmitri his father

bodyguard as a pawn to carry his plan. The investigation of Steve was payed off.

He found that Tyler's phone number was in Dmitri Kaminsky pocket.

4.1.3.2 Tyler Stanford's Statement about the Murder

Tyler Stanford's statement related to the ways of revealing the murder was

about when he ordered Dmitri to spy his father and report to him. And when Tyler

heard the news that his father wanted change the will, he called Hall Baker.

a) Tyler ordered Hal Baker to steal the copy of the will

Tyler wanted Hal Baker to steal the will. He called him when Tyler got

information from Dmitri that his father wanted to change the will. The statement

is below.

“. . . the name of the firm is Renquist, Renquist, and

Fitzgerald. Make a copy of the will and bring it to me.”
“No problem. I'll take care of it, Your Honor.” (Page: 205)

From the quotation above, it could be said that Tyler wanted to get the will

of his father's legacy. And he needed to verify the valid information which he got

from Dmitri before he planned to kill his father.

b) Tyler ordered Dmitri Kaminsky to kill Harry Stanford

After Tyler got the copy of the will and verified it, he ordered Dmitri

Kaminsky to implement the planning of the murder. As stated in the following

below.

Tyler said, “I want you to kill him. Tonight.” (Page: 206)

The quotation above explained that Tyler Stanford was behind the murder

of his father Harry Stanford. He set a planning to prevent his father to change the

will by killing him.

4.1.3.3 The Arrest of Tyler Stanford as the Murderer

Tyler Stanford has been arrested; he was the brain of the murder based on

the investigation of Steve Sloane. Steve brought Lieutenant Kennedy a Boston

Police to arrest Tyler. It was stated by the following below.

Lieutenant Kennedy said, “I'm placing you under arrest,

Judge Stanford, for conspiracy to commit murder. We'll
arrange for extradition papers.” (Page: 383)

From the quotation above, it could be concluded that Tyler Stanford has

been arrested for his conspiracy to commit the murder.

Another statement of Tyler Stanford being arrested by Lieutenant

Kennedy for his conspiracy of the murder was stated below.

“You have the right to remain silent. If you choose to give

up this right, anything you say can and will be used against
you in a court of law. If you cannot afford to hire a lawyer,
one will be appointed to represent you before any
questioning, if you wish one. Do you understand?”
Lieutenant Kennedy asked. (Page: 383-384)

From the quotation above it could be concluded that Lieutenant Kennedy

has red Tyler Stanford his warning. Lieutenant Kennedy has put him under

arrested as the man behind the murder of Harry Stanford.

4.2 Discussion

From the finding above, the focuses in the section are devided into who the

suspected murderers, what the reason of the murder and how the murder revealed.

A crime scene is any location that may be associated with a committed

crime. (eng.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_scene)

According to Connonly (in koesnosoebroto, 1988) there are two categories

in literature, they are non imaginative literature and imaginative literature. Novel

is an imaginative literature. It aims an entertaining of the imagination and a

literary work of fiction.

The murder happened because of some reasons or the motivation from the

murderer. According to Sarwono and Koeswara (1988: 82) the factors of this

murder are:Internal stress, it belongs to the personal failure in adapting his/her

ego. Deindividual or Depersonalization, it can lead someone’s freedom to do

something “crime” so that the act is intensively done. Here the deindividuation is

defined as “Thinking ill of the others” or can be said that only him/herself know

the truth. The last is because of the effect of weapon, it is proved that weapon

plays a great role in criminals acts, the effect of weapon attendance or ownership

can make crime effectively and efficiency done.

The murder had done by Tyler belong to the first-degree premeditated

murder. Samaha (1983:188) said that premeditated murder was planned in

advance. The murderer formulated the plan to kill the victim carefully. In this

case, Tyler planned the murder by hiring some people to help him kill his father.

He hired Dmitri Kaminsky his father’s bodyguard to monitor his activities. To

report the suspicious thing what happened about his father’s will. Hal Baker was

the person he hired to steal a copy of his father’s will in the Renquist, Renquist&

Fitzgerald office.

Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that Tyler Stanford was

failure to maintain over his own ego. He did the murder toward his father because

of his internal stress. Tyler got suffering and had childhood trauma from his father

when he was a kid. He became spiteful and made him murder his own father to

get over his legacy.
