Gas Control Rooms

The SCADA system supervises and control the NNGTS field gas stations from
a primary and a backup control center.

 Main Gas Control Center – Patima

 Backup Control Center – Nea Mesimvria

(unmanned, for disaster recovery)
Infrastructure of Control Room
• Modern Information and Telecom systems support effectively the network
operation and management:
• Pilot Integrated Information System for Natural Gas, certified by Moody’s
• Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA)
• Processes billing information of the remote sites
• Distributed Control Systems (DCS) for the LNG terminal, Nea Messimvria
Compressor Station and Sidirokastron BMS
• Metering Station Invoicing Systems
• Provides a view of the process variables
• Executes control commands
• Online Simulator of NGTS
Remote Control & Communication System (RCC)

RCC : Remote Control & Communication

SCADA : Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (2 dispatching centers, 101 stations)
FOC : Fiber Optic Cable (1,422 Km)
FTS : Fixed Telecom System (FOC Multiplexing System, 90 nodes @ 34 Mbps)
PABX : Private Automatic Branch eXchange (7, ~700 users)
Mobile/Satelite: Mobile Atex handsets – Satellite for exceptional cases

GAS CONTROL ROOMS SERVICES
Gas Control Rooms Services
• Monitoring and remote operation of the network

• Implementation of the transportation plan

• Continuous supervision round the clock of the NNGS via the SCADA system
• Manning the Back Control Room in case of emergency and educational natural gas acts
• Support and coordination of the maintenance personnel and the Authorities in emergency
cases (gas leaks, earthquakes, fires)
• Observe the Natural Gas Off -takes and deliveries in accordance with the ‘users’
nominations and the operating conditions
• Optimization of the National Natural Gas System operation by using on-line simulation
platform
• Intervenes to ensure the smooth operation of the Greek Natural Gas market and/ or
security of supply
Gas Control Rooms Services
 Coordination and Prompt warning and guidance of the maintenance

personnel

 Coordination with other operators

 Management of Equipment Alarms and notification of all parties

 Coordinates Services to address the consequences of a major accident in

the NNGTS taking into account the current relevant instructions issued by

General Secretariat for Civil Protection. This will occur via communicating

with all parties (police, fire brigade, Civil Protection)

 Decide on measures for abnormal conditions (first level)

Gas Control Rooms Services
 Observation of the balance supply,
Undertaking balancing actions in order to:
 Maintain the transmission network within operational limits,
 Achieve an end of the day linepack position in the position in the transmission network
different from the one anticipated on the basis of expected inputs and off-takes for that gas
day, consistent with economic and efficient operation of the transmission network

 Implement the necessary action to inform the involved parties

 Creating, managing and sending operational reports to Management, and organizational units
of DESFA , and Transmission Users

 Exchange information regarding the operational regime between the Parties is carried out
between the Central Dispatching Centers of DESFA, Bulgartransgaz and BOTAS (Turkey TSO)

 DESFA round the clock aiming at optimizing the gas flow through the IP under normal and
emergency conditions

CHALLENGES & SECURITY
Challenges for the next two years

•Replacement of the central SCADA system

•Remote, locally unmanned, operation of the BMS Sidirokastron from the

DESFA’s Dispatching Centers

•Upgrade of the Stations Control Network

Full separation between station process and measurement
Harmonization regarding the infrastructure, the architecture and
the data flow

•Balancing actions by using day-ahead and within-day products through a

balancing platform
