This document discusses plane kinematics of rigid bodies using both absolute and relative motion approaches. It provides examples of plane motion, sample problems calculating velocities and accelerations using both approaches, and explains the concept of relative velocity by visualizing motion as a translation followed by a rotation relative to a reference point on the rigid body. Key concepts covered include absolute versus relative motion analysis, plane motion examples, and relative velocity calculations through separating motion into translation and rotation components.

▪The absolute motion approach to rigid body kinematics is
quite straightforward, provided the configuration lends itself to a geometric description which is not overly complex.
▪If the geometric configuration is complex, analysis by the
principles of relative motion may be preferable.
