ACTIVITY: Below is a photo of Marcel Duchamp’s ‘Fountain’

Based on what you learned about the theories of art, do you consider it as a work of art? Why?
Why not? Defend your evaluation.

Marcel Duchamp’s most famous and controversial work “Fountain” is a work of art. It is an art
since it was made with skills and competence. Even though this work faced a lot of challenges,
controversies and tested beliefs about art and the role of taste in the art world it is still considered
as an art. Based on the theories and principles of the nature of art, his work can be classified as
art for art’s sake of Emmanuel Kant in which it is appreciated and evaluated on how it evokes
aesthetic pleasure and delight. Moreover, art has the ultimate freedom and this was supported by
the statement of Willete (2010) that it exists on its own merits and center of its own world. On the
other hand, his work can also be classified as Art as functional because it is a well-made art and
a functional object as well. As time passes by, his work gathered a lot of judgements, meanings,
and various interpretations despite from all of those his work will remain his own work, his own
concept and that makes it a conceptual art too. Based on the supporting claims therefore the
Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain is a work of art.
