COMPACTION (about 3 set test for compaction

soil)
>each set of compaction soil test will do 3 test
for moisture content<

Proctor mould
Compaction hammer
Analytical balance
Soil pass 37.5 mm 20 mm sieve
Water
Moisture content cans
Trimming knife
Metal scoop
Knife
Oven
Extruder
1)Remove the collar
2)Make sure mould and base is clean. Take the
weight for body + base. Then mark it as M1
3)Measure the volume the mould.
4)Add adequate amount of water into soil that
already pass 37.5 mm and 20 mm sieve . Then
mix it using metal scoop.
5) Attach collar to the body and base and tight
it.
6) Put adequate amount of soil into mould to
get ready for first layer to be compacted.
7)Compact the soil using compaction hammer.
8)Put soil again into mould for second layer and
third layer and compact it again.

9)Remove the collar, smooth off the surface

using trimming knife.
10) Then, record the mass of
Body+Base+compacted soil. Mark it as M2
11) The mass of compacted soil can be
determine as M3.
12) Calculate bulk density
M3 ÷ Volume of mould

13) Use extruder to extrude the compacted

soil out of mould
14) Clear the mould for ppreparation of 2nd
set of testing

15) Cut off the compaction soil and put it into

moisture content cans to determine moisture
content of the soil specimen.

16) Put it into oven and dry it for 24 hours

17) Moisture content will be used to calculate

Dry density

 Bulk density divided with 1 + moisture

content
PERMEABILITY
CONSTANT HEAD

Permeameter
Water tank
CONTAINER FOR WATER COLLECTION
Stop watch

1. Fill in uniform gravel or glass balls of 40mm

thickness
2. Put wire filter -> then fill soil sample -> wire
filter -> uniform gravel on top
3. Fasten top cap and push down plunger to
compact the soil
4. Connect the tubings
5.

6.Fill up the tank with water until the flow is

constant
7.Fill up the cell until flow also constant
8.Then, water will saturate through the cell
9. Fill up the tubes until flow and water levels
constant
10. Water from cell will be filling into the
permeameter tubes.
11. (Tunjuk water level) Water levels in each
permeameter tube will show this condition
12. Start your stop watch
13. At the same time, collect the amount of
water that out flow from the cell
14. Obtained the height between the
permeameter tubes.
15. Repeat the process again to get another
sets of data in about 4 or 5 sets.
FALLING HEAD

Falling head permeameter cell

Water tank
Permeameter
Stop watch

The mould can be used for sampling

1)Assembling the falling head cell for testing
2)Put filter paper -> soil sample -> filter paper
on the top
3) (tunjuk immersion tank) this is immersion
tank.
4) Fill up the tank with water
5)Submerge the falling head cell into
immersion tank
6) ( tunjuk permeameter tubes) this is
permeameter tubes
7) Fill up the tank with water -> de aired the
water
8)After de-aired water done, off the vacuum
pump
9) Then fill up tube one by one
10) Fill tube A to a height that we already
suggest.
11) Then fill up tube B. fill it to a designated
height
12) Do the same thing to tube c
13) All tube are filled with water and the
height is marked
14) Start your stop watch
15) Monitor the movement water from initial
level. (at the same time, time is also
recorded)
16) The water flow into cell
17) After that, stop the clock at designated
time and record h1 and h2.
18) Repeat the process again for another data
of h1 and h2
19) Repeat other process at tube b and c
