Case Studies on Crime Network Data

In this phase we will learn about the applications of network analysis to real life policing problems. We
will examine two real-life crime related social network datasets using the network metrics discussed in the
previous classes. In particular, we will work with the Drug trafficking network which was collected using
phone records during a police investigation against a drug trafficking group (Stathis, 2011). The terrorist
network dataset was obtained from the Analysis Unit (SC7) of Europol (Stathis, 2011).

The reading comprises thesis of Mainas which is obviously long but we suggest you read chapters 1-2-3
and the conclusion. This will provide you extensive literature about applications of this technique to crime
networks.

Feel free to explore some of these networks and see if you can bring them in Gephi to see their structure.
