In just a matter of hours, yesterday's fire ravaged some of that history, but not nearly all of it.
The fire is out now. The spire is gone, but the recognizable bell towers remain, and many
historic structures and artwork survived.

And because of the jetlag or because of some premonition, I woke up in the middle of the night,
could not resist to check my phone.

And what's called behind the roof's a forest, which is a wooden support of the cathedral -
everything which has been put to ashes yesterday.

But it's also weird to remember that it's not the first time that Notre Dame has to be rebuilt,

And then the cathedral kind of fall apart. And that's because of Victor Hugo - created some, you

It must be hard to imagine this place ever truly being gone. I mean, there's just a resilience there

I think we are so lucky that the firemen - and I want to pay tribute to their work - is that they
have been capable of stoking the fire.

Something more than special - it's really the - that's where our heart beats, I think.

So I suspect investigation will be pursued, and we'll try to see what exactly happens.

Many of the bombs went off at churches during Easter Mass. Although no individual or group
has claimed responsibility, the government is now blaming a little-known jihadist group.

And most of the areas were cordoned off to the public, and even the media was not allowed to
enter into the location.

So what we saw from outside was complete devastation. The first thing you see when you go to
the churches is the glass scattered all over the ground. And the walls have been perforated with
ball bearings that were thrown across the room and the premises after the explosion. Even the
altars have been riddled with small metal pieces.

In addition to these attacks on churches that targeted worshippers during Easter, there were also
attacks on high-end hotels.

Many of the people started circulating images of those who had died, images that they had put
up right before the attack.

There were several occasions where the public was evacuated so that the police can conduct
search operations. It started off fine, but tension has grown. And now it has come to a point that
curfew has been imposed again for the second day.

North Korea has agreed to dismantle all of its facilities to produce fissile material that's used to
build nuclear bombs.

Then you need to sit down and negotiate a detailed agreement. You need measures to verify

On the one hand, unless there's a good outcome from the summit, a substantial outcome from the

So in some ways, a lot of the hue and cry from Neil Portnow's remarks really are reflective of
just the general music industry and the lack of diversity in the general music industry.

Stacy L. Smith is the founder and director of the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative at the
University of Southern California

Twenty-three percent of the 700 songs in our sample had one of 10 male songwriters attached to
them, 23 percent of the songs. So culturally, we're allowing 10 men to set the norms.

They were hit on. They were the object of innuendo. They felt personally unsafe in certain
situations. Oftentimes their contributions were ignored or not acknowledged, even dismissed by
the people they were working with.

The Grammy organization is hoping that it can emerge from last year's condemnations as a
leader. Tina Tchen is a co-founder of the Time's Up Legal Defense Fund and was Michelle
Obama's chief of staff. Last spring, the Recording Academy asked Tchen to lead its new task
force for inclusion and diversity. She's well aware that the music industry stats for women are
abysmal.

So earlier this month, the Recording Academy announced a new program. It's asking any
business or individual who hires record producers or engineers to consider at least two women
for any project.

We have taken decades, if not millennia, to get in this position with respect to how women
advance in our broader culture, not just in this industry.

The Recording Academy did expand the number of nominees in its top categories.

innuendo: an indirect remark about somebody/something, usually suggesting something

bad or rude; the use of remarks like this

abysmal: extremely bad or of a very low standard.

So part of what got us thinking about this is a recent article in "The 5)___________ of Higher

In the old days - not that long ago - the 6)___________ was you got a general education, and

So part of what got us thinking about this is a recent article in "The Chronicle of Higher

In the old days - not that long ago - the notion was you got a general education, and then you
could do anything.

And anything, for most workers, means having a job that's fairly focused as a STEM worker; but
then moving on to management or into a regulatory roll, or into a government job. So STEM
has become the place where you go if you want to have a lot of alternatives, 10 years down the
road.

With the exception of two STEM fields, at the moment - civil engineering and architecture, both
of which have been hard-hit by the housing collapse - STEM graduates are the most highly
paid. The most highly paid major is still - has been, for five or six years - petroleum engineer,
which earns about $120,000 a year, over a lifetime.

And that is, if you're going to be a teacher now, you need a master's degree. If you're going to be

want to get a decent job, you need a master's degree. You're crazy if you don't go to graduate
school if you're a STEM major.

So let's now, for the time that we have left, kind of focus on kind of two different questions.

You could argue that these students tend to have more income opportunities later on, that that's
perfectly fine. If it costs - the baseline cost is more, then that's perfectly fine.

If we give kids who go into STEM and business, and some of the other high-paying majors - and
high-cost majors, in the case of STEM - we are going to reinforce intergenerational reproduction
of economic privilege.

I'm a lot more tempted to have people take humanities courses and to shut down my hard
technical courses because I can get a lot more students - more bang for the buck with my
money by selling humanities, than selling STEM.

It is, in the end, the function of any higher education curriculum in a modern republic.

So do - does this whole question about what should happen in the humanities, does that play in -
humanities versus STEM - where does that debate play in this whole question of maintaining
America's global competitiveness?

And is there any push to kind of rethink how teachers are taught or the value that we place on

And in the American system now, in the American economy, that success depends almost

President Trump spoke to supporters last night at a rally in Tupelo, Miss. His words underscore
how divisive and political the impeachment process is likely to remain as it goes forward.

It does three simple things. The first thing it does is it calls for the House to have public hearings.
It also directs the House Intelligence Committee to release publicly all of those private
depositions of interviews they've been taking. And it directs the judiciary committee to
essentially begin and prepare for possible impeachment proceedings.

The vote was split straight down party lines, all but two House Democrats voting in favor, all the

29 of the 31 Democrats who represent districts that Donald Trump won voted for this resolution.

But then you have Republicans, who have also stood directly behind the president on this
question, no defections.

Even prior to this resolution vote, the White House's lawyers had sent a letter to Congress
saying, we see this process as illegitimate, and we won't participate. And, in fact, they've
stonewalled the investigation happening behind closed doors with the House Intelligence
Committee.

Whether or not they will participate is a question that remains open. But the White House has
indicated that their strategy here has just been a blockade.

And I think that the White House thinks if those numbers hold, if the country remains divided,
Democrats are the one taking the risk. What we don't know is how public hearings might shift
that sentiment.

It's different if you see and hear people testifying in public under oath about what they saw and

Democrats still say they'd like to wrap this impeachment investigation on the House side by the
end of the year.

They still have to consider public hearings, impeachment proceedings in the House Judiciary
Committee and still a vote in the full House.

And assuming articles of impeachment are approved, they would then go to the House floor. It's
a privilege matter. There's not that much debate on it.

The Constitution requires that they have a trial, although it does give some flexibility to how
that will go. Senators on both sides have said they do anticipate a trial similar to how the

Facebook announced today it's creating a currency that could be available next year to its 2
billion-plus users worldwide. People who use Facebook apps like WhatsApp and Messenger
could make and receive payments with the new currency.

An estimated 1.7 billion adults on Earth do not have a bank account. When members of this
global underclass try to send money to family or pay a bill, they can get slapped with huge fees.

They're creating a cryptocurrency. Nothing like this has been tried on this scale.

Cryptocurrency is digital money not issued by a central bank or any country's government. The
most popular one to date is bitcoin. The value of cryptocurrencies can fluctuate wildly by
thousands of dollars in the span of months.

The Libra is different from bitcoin in one key respect. The Libra will be backed by real assets - a
basket of bank deposits and short-term securities from different governments.

In the U.S., the dollar is backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, and the
currency is widely trusted. Williams says Facebook has been exposed repeatedly for failing to
meet its promises.

The Libra is an ambitious experiment to make cryptocurrency mainstream. No other

cryptocreator has started with such a massive user base.

If Libra succeeds, the tech giant amasses a new kind of power - financial.

Facebook has also left the door open to data tracking. Company statements indicate that if
customers give consent, Facebook and other parties can collect and track Libra transactions, see
how people spend, use that business intelligence against competitors and to target ads.

Again Facebook wins. So is privacy maintained - no. Is a new currency created - yes. Does it
benefit Facebook - yes. So that doesn't sound very altruistic to me.

Facebook should halt development of this new cryptocurrency until Congress and regulators are
able to conduct a review.

For the first time, scientists have used genetically modified viruses to treat a patient fighting a
life-threatening superbug infection.

Isabelle Carnell-Holdaway was born with a lung disease called cystic fibrosis. When she was 15,
a nasty infection started spreading through her body after she got a double lung transplant in
London.

Isabelle's doctors decided to try something out-of-the-box. Viruses called phages - they're
natural enemies of bacteria.

Using genetic approaches with genome engineering, we're able to assemble this collection of
three phages that we could then combine in a cocktail to use for treatment.

People have been treated with phages before with mixed results. But no one had ever tried
infusing genetically modified phages into someone's body.

It's kind of a scary thing to go in and administer a treatment like this, for which we're
completely on new ground.

And Isabelle, who's now 17, is living an almost completely normal life.

Doctors aren't sure exactly how the phages might have worked, and Isabelle isn't cured. She still
needs to get phage infusions every day.

For them to be able to just have a little fiddle around with these phages is mind-blowing.

Phage therapy seems to be the most promising alternative to antibiotics that's on the scene.

The most obvious one is tuberculosis, which is caused by a related bacterium. And there's very
prevalent drug-resistant strains that are very hard to treat.

cystic fibrosis: u xơ nang

superbug: kháng thuốc kháng sinh

mind-blowing: exciting or impressive

infuse: truyền

phage: trực khuẩn thể

on the scene: đang có
