PAMUKALLE
Pamukkale is one of the marvel at the beauty of the springs in remote region of western.
Turkey on a bright sunny day will find the sight quite dazzling – rather like looking at an ice
fall on a glacier. The area has been popular for many centuries, but the springs and the tufa
must have been here for very much longer. The medicinal and therapeutic properties of some
mineral waters have been recognized since ancient times, and the Romans built the thermal
resort of Hierapolis around the spring here. The Roman resort has not survived the ravages of
time as successfully as the tufa, although the ruins can still be seen, but there is now a modern
tourist spa resort built on the same site.
The waters of a geothermal area are invariably rich dissolved mineral salts, but the
composition of the salts varies from place to place depending on the composition of the
underlying rocks through which the waters flow.
Derived from Natural Wonders of the World page 8 {N WW] Barnes New York

RAINBOWS
Another atmospheric wonder of the world is the rainbow. Rainbows are common: it
requires only the right combination of the sun and rain for one to appear, yet rainbows have a
special place in many of the world’s cultures.
A rainbow is the refraction of sunlight or raindrops. The larger the raindrops, the more
brilliant are the colors in the rainbow. Sometime, when a rainbow is particularly bright, a
paler, secondary bow with the colors reversed, can appear behind it. If someone watching the
rainbow moves, the light will be refracted through different raindrops. The sun, always behind
the watcher, will light up constantly changing raindrops as the watcher moves forward, until
there is no more rain left to refract and the rainbow fades.
Derived from Natural Wonders of the World page 8 {N WW] Barnes New York
Exercise : Answer these question below
1. When will the rainbows visible?

WORK AND CAREERS
Sometimes we say that someone we know is a square peg in a round hole. This
simple statement means that the person we are talking about is not suited for the job he is
doing. He may be a bookkeeper who really wants to be an actor or a mechanic who likes
cooking. Unfortunately, many people in the world are square peg. They are not doing for
one reason or another. As a result, they probably are not doing a very good job and certainly
they are not happy. Choosing the right career is very important. Most of us spend a great part
of our lives at our jobs. For that reason we should try to find out what our talents are and how
we can use them. We can do this through aptitude test, interviews with specialists, and study
books in our field or interest. There are many careers open to each of us, perhaps we like
science. Then we might prepare ourselves to be chemists, physicists, or biologists. Maybe
our interests take us into the business world and such work as accounting, personnel
management or public relations. Many persons find their place in government service like
teaching, newspaper work, medicine, engineering-these many other fields offer fascinating
careers to persons with talent and training.

THANKSGIVING DAY
When the first Englishmen settled in New England in 1620, their first year was full of
hardships. Many of them died because the winter was much colder than what they were used
to. Although they suffered greatly, they worked hard to build their houses and plant a few
crops. These people believed in the power of God and prayed that He would lead them softly
through their hardships in the new country.
When they harvested the first crops they were greatly surprised because they had not
expected a very good harvest. Now they had plenty of good to eat and everybody was happy.
They had enough food for the next winter. Because of that the government proclaimed a day
of thanksgiving to God for having led them safely through their difficult first year.
They sent four men to the woods to find animals for the thanksgiving/east. They
returned with a large number of animals, most of which were turkeys. The fast lasted almost a
week. A large number of friendly natives were invited to the thanksgiving feast.
By this time the small groups of Englishmen were beginning to think that they were
used to the weather of the new country. But suddenly in May 1623 it stopped raining. The
crops were almost destroyed. The governor then appointed a day in the middle of July for

HEAT
We derive heat from the sun, but we do not fully understand the way in which it
comes. We think that it is transferred by electro-magnetic waves, but we cannot see them. The
heat rays from the sun do not heat space. Although they through it. We know this because
space remains cold, although the rays warm the air and all other objects they touch. All
objects reflects some of the rays and absorb some of the rays. A polished surface reflects more
radiated heat than a dull surface. A dull surface absorbs more radiated heat than a polished
surface. We say that the sun radiates heat, and we call this method of heating heat transfer by
radiation.
