2. Grammar clues.
2.1. The simple past tense: did

We use the auxiliary (did) to make questions in the past about finished
actions/activities.
Use “did” in questions and in negative sentences.
NOTE: “did” is also the past form of the verb “do”.

Remember, in questions we don’t put the verb in past:


● Did you go to the beach yesterday?
● When did Megan take the train to school?
● Did the students bring the book?

To answer in an affirmative way, you need to put the verb in past.


● Yes, I went to the beach.
● Megan took the bus to school last week.
● Yes, the students brought the books.

To answer in a negative way, you need to use did +not (didn’t)+verb (base form)
● No, I didn’t go to the beach.
● Megan didn’t take the bus to school.
● No, the students didn’t bring the books.

2.2. The simple past tense: was/ were

We use twas/were to talk about feelings, to describe something in the past, and for
places. Use was with: I, she, he,it. Use were with: you, we, they.

Feelings:
● Was the teacher sick yesterday in class? Yes, she was pretty sick.
● Were you angry when you heard the news about Venezuela? Yes, I was so
angry.
● Were the kids happy with their new toys? No, they weren’t happy with their
new toys.

Describing:
● Was the weather nice last weekend? Yes,It was very nice last weekend.
● How was the class yesterday? It was entertaining.
● Were the video games boring? No, they weren’t boring.

Places:
● Where was his mother this morning? His mother was at the grocery store this
morning.
● Were her siblings in Cancun, Mexico last week? No, they weren’t. They were in
Panama.
● Where were the teachers two days ago? They were in a meeting downtown.

2.3. Simple past using: There was - There were

We use there was (singular)and there were (plural) to refer to the existence or
presence of someone or something in the past.

● Were there many people at the party last weekend? Yes, there were many
people in the party.
● Was there a computer in the class this morning? No, there wasn’t a computer
in class.
● Were there cars outside of the church? Yes, there were 9 cars outside of the
church.

My best friend, Amber came from Canada 3


weeks ago. She brought me some really nice
gifts, but I didn’t give her anything; I didn’t
have money so I made a delicious lunch for
her. She liked it a lot. She was in Canada for
2 years. She was living with her aunt on her
mother’s side. Amber was very happy in
Canada, but she had to come back because
her father got sick. She wanted to stay in
Canada but she was very scared about her
father’s health. Thank goodness he got better
and he wasn’t in the hospital anymore. He
finally went home to rest and Amber went
back to Canada this afternoon, she was happy

Last weekend my friends and I went to a party. There were many people from my
neighborhood and high school. There was a great D.J. I loved the food, there were candy
apples, there were other different kinds of sweets in a huge bowl and there was a huge
plate of appetizers with sauces. There was a beautiful chocolate fountain and next to it,
there were strawberries and marshmallows on a stick.
