CHAPTER 2
1. Explain the difference of equality and equity as illustrated in the picture below.

Equality involves everyone receiving exactly the same treatment, whereas equity requires fair
treatment according to each person’s needs and situation. Equality differs from equity in that it relates
more to sameness or equal distribution. In society, equal treatment does not always produce an equitable
result.
You see the first two blocks of this graphic highlighting the difference between equality
and equity. While it’s a little cheesy and far from a comprehensive explanation, the cartoon does help us
separate the ideas of equality and equity. Equality ensures everyone receives the same rights. Equity
means everyone has access to those rights and gets what they need to be successful, considering the
systems which don’t treat them the same.
2. Below id the photo of the Brexit Bus (photo by David Beeson). Identify the narrative, the story,
the data and call to action in this photo. Explain your answers.

Narrative: The health of the people is more important than politics.

The data: €350 million a week
Call to action: let’s fund our NHS instead
In this photo, it promotes healthcare importance over politics. The European citizens are sending
350 million a week to fund the EU, the photo encourages to vote and choose to fund NHS instead of EU.
