We want to check the IP address of each of the HOST and VM machines … do you
recall what networking command allows you to see the IP information from last week’s
assignment?
a. Enter this command into the command prompts in all 3 of the machines and
record the information in the table below. Note that for the HOST machine, when
looking up this information – remember which Virtual Switch you are currently
using …
MACHINE Logical IP Subnet Mask Defaul
Gateway
HOST -142.156.111.158 255.255.255.0 142.156.111.1
Win7 VM -142.156.111.135 255.255.255.0 142.156.111.1
Win81 VM -142.156.111.196 255.255.255.0 142.156.111.1
b. How do the IP address of the 3 machines differ? How are they the
same? What can you say about the connectivity of these 3 machines based
upon all of the information in the table above?
They differ because the Hyper-V Manager is able to run virtual machines on the
HOST computer, which makes the HOST computer functions as a local
virtualization server. Because of the Virtual Machines Windows 8 and Windows 7
are run on my HOST computer, they are able to have the same subnet mask but
different IP, as well as the Default Gateway is the same for all, because the
HOST computer acts as a router and has its own Default Gateway, which
enables the VM’s to connect to the HOST computer.
17. Launch Internet Explorer (IE) in the Win7 VM. Surf to the www.cbc.ca website.
a. Can you see the website? What does this mean in terms of the connectivity of the
Win7 VM and the world?
The website is reachable, I am able to see it, this means that Win7 is connected
to the internet through my HOST computer adapter. Because my HOST computer
functions as a virtualization server which enables Win7 to connect to the world it is
recognized as a host.
18. Launch IE in the Win81 VM and surf to the www.cbc.ca website.
I am able to see the website, although I had to /release my IP and renew it because windows 8
is often temperamental. Afterwards I was able to reach the website fully.
19. Fill out the table
Question about Connectivity Is able to? [YES or
NO]
Can the HOST talk to the Win7 YES
VM?
Can the HOST talk to the Win81 YES
VM?
Can the Win7 VM talk to the YES
HOST?
Can the Win81 VM talk to the YES
HOST?
Can the Win7 VM talk to the Win81 YES
VM?

20. Now let’s experiment with another network utility called tracert.
Tracert is able to trace the path that an Internet Protocol (IP) packets takes to its destination.
NOTE: You may want to save answering this question until you are done with the
a.
MACHINE Number of Hops to
www.conestogac.on.ca

HOST 3 Hops

Win 7 VM 3 Hops

Win 8.1 VM 2 Hops

b. Based on the number of hops from each of the machines to the destination, what can
you conclude about the 3 machines (remember that it appears that 2 of the machines are
running (being hosted) within the other machine)
This means that the 2 VM machines use connection through the HOST computer, which
means it takes the same adapter location to connect to other sources as the HOST
computer. Connect through the same Default Gateway.
21. Ipconfig /release
The adapter sends a DHCPRELEASE message to the DHCP server to release the current
DHCP configuration and discard the IP address configuration for either all adapters or specific
adapter if Adapter perimeter is included.
22.
a. MACHINE Logical IP Subnet Mask Default
Gateway
HOST - 192.168.137.1 255.255.255.0 None
Win8 VM - 192.168.137.147 255.255.255.0 192.168.137.1
Win7 VM- 192.168.137.114 255.255.255.0 192.168.137.1
d. The values of the Logical IP addresses are the same because they use the same
subnet mask and same default gateway to connect to the adapter. Based on the logical IP
addresses these IP address values belong to Class C IP address class.
e. This means that the HOST computer acts as a Virtualization Server for the VM. It
allows the VM’s to connect through the same adapter that the HOST is connected through. In
terms of network commands and requests coming from the VM’s have to send commands to the
HOST in order for the HOST computer to connect / allow them to connect through the same
adapter, same connection.
25.
a. I can see the website through Win 7 VM , it means that Win 7 is connected through the same
connection that the HOST computer is using, which means it is connected to the world.
26. I am able to see the google homepage with Win 8.1 VM

27. Now let’s experiment with the ability for the 3 machines to see and talk to each other
Question about Connectivity Is able to? [YES or
NO]
Can the HOST talk to the Win7 VM? YES
Can the HOST talk to the Win81 VM? YES
Can the Win7 VM talk to the HOST? YES
Can the Win81 VM talk to the HOST? YES
Can the Win7 VM talk to the Win81 YES
VM?

MACHINE HOPS TO
www.conestogac.on.ca

HOST 3

Win 7 VM 5

Win 81 VM 5
28.
a.

b. Based on the hops of each machine I can conclude that the 2 VM have to send
commands to the HOST in order to reach the desirable destination. HOST computer takes less
hops because it connects to the internet right away where as Win 7 and Win 8.1 have to
connect to the HOST and then to the Internet.
31.
b.
MACHINE Logical IP Subnet Mask Default Gateway

HOST 142.156.111.78 255.255.255.0 142.156.111.1

Win7 VM 169.254.149.80 255.255.0.0 None

Win81 VM 169.254.188.1 255.255.0.0 None

c. I do not see a logical IP address associated with the HOST-PRIVATE virtual switch on
the HOST. This means that my HOST computer isn’t functioning as a virtualization server and
isn’t allowing the VM’s to connect through the default Gateway/router that the HOST is
connected to. The VM’s do have an IP address set for them, but it is an Autoconfiguration IPv4
Adress. A private network has been set for the VM’s because they are unable to connect to the
internet. They are set to a Private Host.

32.
Question about Connectivity Is able to? [YES or NO]

Can the HOST talk to the Win7 VM? NO

Can the HOST talk to the Win81 VM? NO

Can the Win7 VM talk to the HOST? NO

(using any of the HOST IP
addresses?)

Can the Win81 VM talk to the HOST? NO

(using any of the HOST IP
addresses?)

Can the Win7 VM talk to the Win81 VM? YES

33.The type of network the 2 VM’s are using is a PRIVATE-HOST network, it allows them to
communicate between each other and between each other only. HOST-PRIVATE virtual switch
is acting as a private virtualization server for the 2 VM’s. It just hosts a private connection
between the 2 VM’s. It is unable to connect to the web or to the internet, unless you set it to.
