Chapter 9: Binary Phase Diagram (10)
1. For a lead-tin alloy of composition 80 Wt.% Sn-20Wt.% Pb, and at 180 0C ; perform the

3. Define the following: (3+3+3+1=10)

a. Eutectic, eutectoid and peritectic reactions; include examples and equations
b. Give an example of peritectic reaction; does the peritectic reaction occur in Fe-C
system? If so, identify it.

4. Eutectoid steel is heated from the lower critical temperature line A1 to 800 C; would the
steel expand or contract? Why or why not; explain. (5)

Chapter 5: Diffusion: (15)

5. A plain carbon steel gear is to be carburized to improve its surface hardness. The initial
carbon content of steel is 0.15 Wt% and a carbon content of 0.75 Wt% is to be
established at a position 0.5 mm below the surface. Furthermore, the surface
concentration is to be maintained at 1.3 Wt% C. Specify treatment time for a temperature
of 1100 degree K. The pre-exponential for carbon diffusion in gamma iron is 2.3 x 10-5
m2/s and activation energy is 148000 J/mol.
