1. Employing the phase diagram, calculate the composition of the alloy at which the fraction of
total α is three times the fraction of β at slightly below eutectic temperature in the Pb-Sn system
(maximumsolubility of Sn in Pb is 18.3 wt% leading to α solid solution while that of Pb in Sn is 2.2 wt%
leading to β solid solution).

Ans :
2. What is the fraction of proeutectoid and eutectoid phase for an iron-carbon alloy in which the mass
fractions of total ferrite and total cementite are 0.86 and 0.14 respectively? What is the composition
of the alloy? Draw microstructure of this steel just above the eutectoid temperature and at room
temperature. Explain the microstructural evolution.
Ans
3. Following is a micrograph of steel, the lighter phase is proeutectoid cementite and the darker phase
is alternating lamellae of ferrite and cementite.

Is it a eutectoid, hypoeutectoid or hypereutectoid steel? Assuming the weight fraction of proeutectoid

phase to be 0.12, determine the composition of the steel. What is the approximate upper critical
transformation temperature of this steel?
4. In the steel portion of Fe-C diagram indicate the ranges at which steels of various carbon content are
heated to carry out the annealing and normalizing, hardening, spheroidizing and tempering heat
treatments. Is there any difference in austenizing temperature for annealing and normalizing?
Explain with the help of microstructure evolution.

Ans: :
5. Explain the purpose of carrying of surface hardening in engineering components. Elaborate the
hardening technique of medium carbon steel for gear and automotive shaft. Elaborate on the case
hardening techniques of low carbon steel to industry with the help of schematic.

Ans:
6. Draw the continuous-cooling transformation diagram for a 0.35 wt% C iron-carbon alloy. Indicate
and specify heat treatment technique with cooling rate in continuous-cooling curves to yield the
following microstructures:

(a) Fine pearlite and proeutectoid ferrite

(b) Martensite
(c) Martensite and proeutectoid ferrite
(d) Coarse pearlite and proeutectoid ferrite
(e) Martensite, fine pearlite, and proeutectoid ferrite
7. Do you think alloys are superior to metals in their mechanical properties? Justify with examples and
application. Discuss the mechanism involved in alloying.
Ans:
8. Discuss the types of commercial titanium based alloys used in aerospace structures. Why titanium
based alloys are widely used in biomedical implants compared to stainless steel?
Ans:
9. Discuss the strengthening mechanism of single phase materials and alloys with the help of schematic.
Give the specific strengthening of aluminium alloys used in aerospace structures.
Ans:
10. If yield strength of a material changes from 150MPa to 600MPa, when grain size changes from 8m
to 2m. Find out the yield strength of same metallic material if it have grain size 4m.
