Parent Handout

What is an integrated phonological approach? How will it help my child? This intervention will
help your child with a number of things to improve his speech
• An integrated phonological awareness approach targets letter knowledge and speech
sounds simultaneously
• Awareness of sounds: he will be able to hear a sound, identify what that sound is and
move it around in order to change the word (cat to tac)
• Speech production: this will help him produce those sounds he is incorrectly producing
now
• Letter knowledge: this will help him to recognize how letters match sounds

What will a therapy session look like for your child? What are some activities you might see?
• During a therapy session you might see me play a memory game with Tommy. I have
him match words that have the same first letter of the same last letter. This activity helps
him identify sounds (cite the book).
• Another activity you might see during the session is BINGO. I use the BINGO to develop
letter-sound awareness. You might hear me ask, “do you have a word that starts with the
letter F” then I make the F sound. This provides him with time to identify the correct
letter to the correct sound (cite book).

What can you do at home to provide extra practice?

While you cook dinner, have Tommy help you.
• Ask him about the ingredients you are using, use the prompts below as examples.
• For example: Cheese
What does cheese rhyme with? (i.e. please, bees, breeze)
What sound does it start with?
What sound does it end with?
What would happen if you moved that sound to the front? (i.e.
zeech...it may be silly, that’s okay!)
Do you know what letter it starts with? Do you know what letter it
ends with? (have him draw it on a piece of paper, white board, or
in a pile of flour or sugar on the counter)
