Problems in the Transmission


The transmission does not operate in any speed or the transmission does not engage in all
speeds.

1. The oil pressure is low. Check these causes of low oil pressure.

a. The oil level is low.

b. The control linkage is loose or out of adjustment.

c. The gear pump for the transmission or the pump drive is failing.

d. Air is leaking into the inlet side of the gear pump for the transmission.

e. The load piston in the pressure control valve or the pressure differential valve is not
operating.

f. The transmission leaks internally.

g. The pressure relief valve needs adjustment or the pressure relief will not close.

2. The transmission is failing mechanically.

4. The transfer gear or bevel gears are failing.

5. The steering clutches are failing.

6. The final drives are failing.

The transmission does not shift into one or several speeds properly.

1. The control linkage is loose or out of adjustment.

2. The oil level is low.

3. The clutch pressure is low.

The shifts are slow.

1. The oil pressure is low.

2. The control linkage is out of adjustment.

3. Air is leaking into the inlet side of the gear pump for the transmission.

4. The load piston in the pressure control valve or the pressure differential valve is not
operating.

The transmission downshifts spontaneously during machine operation.

1. A loss of oil pressure causes the pressure differential valve to move the controls toward the
NEUTRAL position.

The transmission engages very suddenly and the shifts are rough.

1. The initial setting of the modulating valve is not correct.

2. The control linkage is out of adjustment.

3. The load piston in the pressure control valve or the pressure differential valve is not
operating.

4. Control valve springs are failing.

The transmission operates in FORWARD speeds only.

1. The control linkage is loose or out of adjustment.

2. The No. 2 clutch is not engaged. Check these causes of slippage.

The transmission operates in REVERSE speeds only.

1. The control linkage is loose or out of adjustment.

2. The No. 1 clutch is not engaged. Check these causes of slippage.

a. The oil pressure is low.

b. The friction discs and the clutch plates are worn.

c. Clutch components are broken.

The transmission does not operate in the first speed FORWARD or REVERSE.

1. The No. 5 clutch is not engaged. Check these causes of slippage.

a. The oil pressure is low.

b. The friction discs and the clutch plates are worn.

c. Clutch components are broken.

The transmission does not operate in the second speed FORWARD or REVERSE.

1. The No. 3 clutch is not engaged. Check these causes of slippage.

a. The oil pressure is low.

b. The friction discs and the clutch plates are worn.

c. Clutch components are broken.

The transmission does not operate in the third speed FORWARD or REVERSE.

1. The No. 4 clutch is not engaged. Check these causes of slippage.

a. The oil pressure is low.

b. The friction discs and the clutch plates are worn.

c. Clutch components are broken.

The transmission is engaged when the selector lever is in NEUTRAL.

1. The control linkage is loose or out of adjustment.

2. The direction clutch is engaged and the direction clutch does not release.

When the transmission engages, the machine does not move and the engine stops.

1. The final drives are failing.

2. The steering clutches are failing.

3. The pinion gear or bevel gears are failing.

4. The drive shaft is failing.

5. The transfer gears are failing.

6. The gears in the transmission will not move. Check these causes of mechanical blocking.

a. Multiple clutches are engaged.

b. The transmission is failing mechanically.

7. The torque divider or the torque converter is failing mechanically.

The transmission gets hot.

1. The oil level is low.

2. The oil level is high.

3. The core of the oil cooler is not completely open.

4. The gear pump for the transmission is worn. The oil flow is low.

5. The torque converter has been operated near stall speed for a long period.

6. The friction between the plates and the discs of the clutches is too great.

The noise from the gear pump is not normal.

1. Loud sounds at short intervals are an indication of pump cavitation.

2. A constant loud noise is an indication of pump failure.

3. Air is leaking into the inlet side of the gear pump for the transmission.

When the transmission engages, the machine does not move and the engine stops.

1. The transmission is locked. Check these causes of mechanical blocking.

a. Transmission components are damaged.

b. One or more of the clutches are not correctly engaged.

2. Teeth on the bevel or pinion gears are broken.

3. Teeth on the gears in the final drives are broken.

Problems in the Torque Converter


The torque converter gets hot.

1. The temperature gauge is failing.

2. The torque converter is failing mechanically.

3. The core of the oil cooler is not completely open.

4. The torque converter has been operated near stall speed for a long period.

5. The torque converter leaks internally. Oil is filling the engine flywheel housing and the
torque converter housing.

6. The oil cooler lines are restricting oil flow.

7. Not enough power train oil is flowing into the torque converter. Check these causes of low
flow.

a. The gear pump is failing.

b. The transmission leaks internally.

c. The inlet relief valve is not closing properly or the inlet relief valve is failing.

The noise of the torque converter is a metallic scraping.

1. The bearings in the torque converter are worn or damaged.

2. The turbine blades are loose. The stator blades are loose. The impeller blades are loose.

3. The load on the output shaft of the torque converter is unbalanced to one side.

Problems in the Torque Divider


The information that follows may be used to diagnose problems in the torque divider. This
information does not give every possible cause. However, many of the common causes are listed.

The torque divider gets hot.

1. The power train oil contains air bubbles. Check these causes of air bubbles.

a. The air vents in the power train oil system are not open.

b. Oil line connections are loose.

c. The cover of the power train oil filter is loose.

2. The oil pressure is low. Check these causes of low oil pressure.

a. The torque converter seals are leaking.

b. The oil line between the inlet relief valve and the torque converter is restricting flow.

c. The inlet relief valve is not closing.

d. The outlet relief valve is not closing.

e. The oil level is low.

f. The gear pump is failing.

3. The cooling system is faulty. Check these causes of loss of cooling.

a. The coolant level is low.

b. The fan drive belts are loose.

c. The water pump is failing.

d. The core of the oil cooler is not completely open.

e. The oil cooler lines are restricting oil flow.

4. The machine is operating at a high altitude.

5. The machine is being operated in high ambient temperatures.

6. The torque converter has been operated near stall speed for a long period.

7. The temperature gauge is failing.

8. The load on the machine exceeds the correct load range for the transmission speed.

The torque divider is leaking oil.

1. The oil line connections are damaged. Check these causes of oil leakage.

a. The tubes and the connectors are damaged.

b. The hydraulic hoses are failing.

2. The gear pump is failing. Check this cause of oil leakage.

a. The cover gasket of the gear pump is leaking.

3. The internal seals are leaking. Check these causes of oil leakage.

a. The seals between the impeller and the carrier are leaking.

b. The seals between the front bearing retainer and the carrier are leaking.

c. The seal for the output shaft of the torque divider is leaking.

4. The gaskets of the torque divider are leaking. Check these causes of oil leakage.

a. The gaskets between the flywheel housing and the torque divider housing are leaking.

b. The gasket between the seal of the torque divider and the bearing carriers is leaking.

c. The gasket between the flywheel housing and the engine block is leaking.

The inlet pressure of the torque divider is high.

1. The inlet relief valve is not opening.

2. Flow is restricted in the outlet relief valve.

3. The spring in the outlet relief valve is too strong.

4. The outlet line to the oil cooler is restricted.

The inlet pressure of the torque divider is low.

1. The gear pump for the transmission is failing.

2. The oil flow to the torque divider is low.

3. The inlet relief valve is not closing. Check these causes of low inlet pressure.

a. Dirt or foreign material is preventing the closing of the inlet relief valve.

b. Components of the inlet relief valve are failing.

4. The outlet relief valve is not closing. Check these causes of low inlet pressure.

a. The spring in the outlet relief valve is too weak.

b. Dirt or foreign material is preventing the closing of the outlet relief valve.

5. The internal seals are leaking. Check these causes of low inlet pressure.

a. The seals between the impeller and the carrier are leaking.

b. The seals between the front bearing retainer and the carrier are leaking.

The torque divider housing and the engine flywheel housing contain too much oil.

1. The gear pump for the transmission is failing.

2. The magnetic screen is restricted.

3. The torque converter leaks internally.

The noise in the planetary gears of the torque divider is not normal.

1. The bearings for the planetary gears are failing.

2. Teeth on the gears in the torque divider are broken.

3. The bearings in the flywheel are failing.

Problems in the Steering and the Brakes


The machine will not turn in one direction.

1. The steering and brake control linkages are damaged or the adjustment is not correct.

2. The oil lines are leaking. The steering clutch control valve is leaking.

3. The steering clutch discs and plates are worn or damaged.

4. The seals of the steering clutch cylinders are damaged.

The machine will not turn in either direction.

1. The oil pressure to the steering clutch control valve is low.

2. The oil lines are leaking. The steering clutch control valve is leaking.

3. The adjustment is not correct for the steering and brake control linkages.

4. The steering clutches are not releasing properly.

5. The splines on the steering clutch drum or the brake drum are damaged.

6. The springs in the control valve are worn or broken.

7. The transmission leaks internally.

8. The modulating valve is not closing or the modulating valve is not adjusted correctly.

The machine moves in either direction when both steering clutches are engaged.

1. The steering clutch discs and plates are worn or damaged.

2. Springs in the steering clutches are weak or damaged.

3. Bolts for the springs in the steering clutches are broken.

4. The splines on the steering clutch hubs are damaged.

5. The springs in the control valve are worn or broken.

6. Grooves are worn into the inner drum and the outer drum of the steering clutches. These
grooves interfere with the release of the clutches.

The steering is slow.

1. The control linkages for the steering clutches and brakes are loose or the adjustment is not
correct.

2. The brake linings are worn or damaged.

3. The oil pressure to the steering clutch control valve is low.

4. The splines on the steering clutch hubs are damaged.

5. The steering clutch cylinders are leaking. The steering clutch control valve is leaking.

The brakes will not engage.

1. The operation of the brake pedal linkage or the adjustment of the linkage is not correct.

2. The brake bands are worn or damaged.
