Chapter 1:
Overview of Language Policy and Practice in Education Around the World

Reaction:
For me, the language is the most important components to unite all the people even they are not all in
the same groups because of the English language as a universal language and the other language that use in
specific area or country to communicate within the area. In addition, language policy is a body of ideals, laws,
regulation, rules, and practices intended to achieve the planned language change in the societies, group or
system according to David Cassels Johnson at link.springer.com. The department of Education Language in
Education Policy since 1998 is based on the principles of the right of children to be educated in their mother
tongue whilst having access to a global language such as English (from pmg.org.za). I agree with Ruiz (1984),
about the three perspective of language, in the problem is the other language becomes a less value because
they are focus of studying and learning in the other languages, in the right is everyone have right to maintain
their language identity and used it in language education even it was not a dominant, and the resources is the
contribution of the language even dominant or not to contribute the richness in our nation.

Reflection:
The use of mother tongue or native language have a big contribution or impact in our society and in
our nation to identify the identity of different individuals from different groups. I learned from this chapter is
the different laws and policies that can develop the use of mother tongue or native language for the
educational purposes like mode of instructions and group identities in different societies in the Philippines and
to be able for the learners to understand their lessons. Also, the different person that studied about the use of
mother tongue or native language in society and in educational system in different countries or territories.
And the different countries that illustrate the challenges of determining language policy, the Africa, India, and
the Europe and the different languages that they used.
