Are the FAS2552 and FAS2554 controllers the same for both models?
Answer: Yes, the same PCM is used in the FAS2552 and the FAS2554 and automatically picks up the
model type based on the chassis in which it boots up. For sparing efficiency purposes, only one PCM is
needed for a site with both FAS2552 and FAS2554 models.
Which type of processors and how many processing cores does the FAS2500 have?
Answer: Table 3 gives processing core information.
How are NVMEM contents protected on the FAS2500 upon dirty shutdown?
Answer: As with the FAS2200 series, the FAS2500 series uses battery-backed-up system memory, called
NVMEM, and it provides functionality similar to that of NVRAM on other FAS platforms. Unlike NVRAM,
which uses separate battery-backed-up memory, NVMEM uses space carved out of the battery-backed-
up main system memory to provide NVMEM functionality. On the FAS2500, the DIMM slot closest to the
NVMEM battery is backed up by the battery to maintain the contents in the event of a dirty shutdown.
How long does it take for the FAS2500 NVMEM battery to charge?
Answer: The NVMEM battery lasts at least 72 hours, and it takes 15 hours to charge a completely
discharged NVMEM battery.

What are the required cluster interconnect ports for clustered Data ONTAP on FAS2500?
Answer: Refer to Table 6 for cluster interconnect port requirements. Running clustered Data ONTAP on
the FAS2552 and FAS2554 requires using two of the on-board 10GbE ports, and FAS2520 requires
10GBASE-T ports.

Which 1GbE and 10GbE SFPs are supported for on-board UTA2 ports?
Answer: Part number X6568-R6 is for 1GbE copper SFP to used the UTA2 ports over an ethernet
connection. X6567-R6 is part number for 1GbE SFP while X6589-R6 SFP+ is part number for 10GbE is

Can UTA2 ports be used for cluster interconnect with clustered Data ONTAP?
Answer: Yes, the 10GbE UTA2 ports are supported for the cluster interconnect. 1GbE SFP cannot be
used for the cluster interconnect.
Can UTA2 ports be used in target or initiator mode when set to the FC personality?
Answer: Yes, on-board and adapter-based UTA2 ports can be configured as target or initiator.
Can UTA2 ports in the FC personality be used with DS14MK2/MK4 shelves or tape devices?
Answer: UTA2 ports are not supported with older DS14 FC shelves or IBM tape devices. Direct
connection to tape drives with UTA2 ports are supported on HP, Quantum, and Tandberg tape devices,
other non-IBM tape devices requires a FC switch between the UTA2 port and tape drive.
Answer: Yes, FC tape drives can be directly connected to UTA2 ports. IBM tape drives are not supported.
Can the 10GbE UTA2 ports be used with stateless offload in VIFs?
Answer: Yes, the on-board 10GbE ports can be used with stateless offload in VIFs, with a couple of
conditions. First, all of the VIF links must be 10GbE because mixed physical link speeds in the same VIF
do not work. Second, all ports in the 10GbE VIF must support stateless offload. If stateless offload is not
supported for all the 10GbE ports in the VIF, the on-board 10GbE ports are automatically disabled.
Are there special 10GbE requirements for clustered Data ONTAP on FAS2500?
Answer: See Table 6 for the required and recommended cluster interconnect ports.
Can all four on-board FAS2500 10GbE ports be used for host connectivity with Data ONTAP
operating in 7-Mode?
Answer: Yes, you can use all on-board UTA2/10GbE ports for data access with Data ONTAP operating in
7-Mode.
Can all four on-board FAS2500 1GbE ports be used for host connectivity with Data ONTAP
operating in 7-Mode?
Answer: No, support with 1GbE SFP for data access starts with Data ONTAP 8.3.1RC and it is operating
in clustered Data ONTAP. Four ports with 1GbE can be used for host connectivity in cDOT. Support for
7-mode is coming in future 8.2.X ONTAP release.
What are the recommended twinax copper cables for on-board UTA2 ports set to the 10GbE
personality?
Answer: Cisco branded twinax cables are recommended for on-board UTA2 ports set to the 10GbE
personality at launch on Data ONTAP 8.2.1 for cluster interconnect and data connectivity. NetApp
branded twinax cables are recommended for on-board UTA2 ports set to 10GbE at launch for cluster
interconnect.
Which supported Cisco twinax copper cables can be used as data cables?
Answer: The Cisco copper twinax cables that can be used for data are as follows:
– X-SFP-H10GB-CU1M-R6: Cable, Cisco, twinax 10GbE copper SFP+ 1m
– X-SFP-H10GB-CU3M-R6: Cable, Cisco, twinax 10GbE copper SFP+ 3m
– X-SFP-H10GB-CU5M-R6: Cable, Cisco, twinax 10GbE copper SFP+ 5m
What are the mode and reach for the on-board UTA2/GbE and 10GbE ports?
Answer: The on-board GbE and 10GbE ports are short-reach multimode ports.
Can the 10GBASE-T ports be used for the cluster interconnect with clustered Data ONTAP?
Answer: 10GBASE-T ports are supported for the cluster interconnect.
Are there special 10GbE requirements for clustered Data ONTAP on FAS2520?
Answer: See Table 6 for required and recommended cluster interconnect ports.

What is the supported internal drive maximum Flash Pool cache size on FAS2500?
Answer: Varying Flash Pool cache size are available to order as hybrid internal drives in FAS2500. A lot
of new configurations have been added. Refer to the product bulletin on the Field Portal for more details.
With the ECTO model, various valid Flash Pool configurations can be ordered by choice.
What are the maximum aggregate and volume sizes on the FAS2500 series?

What is the maximum shelf depth for stacks with all HDDs or Flash Pool?
Answer: The maximum shelf depth for stacks containing all HDDs or Flash Pool stacks with SSD and
HDD disks is five.
Can external DS2246 and DS4243 external shelves be mixed on the FAS2500?
Answer: Yes, you can mix DS2246 and DS4243 shelves on a single FAS2552 or FAS2554 SAS stack,
but you should minimize transitions between the two shelf types. Note that mixing DS2246 and DS4243
shelves is supported only on FAS2520, FAS2552 and FAS2554 and FAS2200.

Does the customer need to perform any additional setup on FAS2500 with Data ONTAP 8.3?
Answer: No additional configuration is required. In the case of Flash Pool, the customer has the flexibility
to partition Flash Pools to improve efficiency.
Can I upgrade FAS2500 with Data ONTAP 8.2.2 clustered Data ONTAP systems to Data ONTAP
8.3?
Answer: Yes. However, it is a disruptive procedure.
What is the upgrade procedure to Data ONTAP 8.3 with advanced drive partitioning?
Answer: Follow the procedure from Advanced Drive Partitioning FAQ
Upgrading existing FAS2500 clustered Data ONTAP platforms with clustered Data ONTAP 8.2.2p to
get advanced drive partitioning is a three-step process:
– Step 1: Data evacuation
– Step 2: System initialization followed by a fresh installation of Data ONTAP 8.3
– Step 3: Repopulating data back to the system
There are currently three procedures available for upgrading to 8.3 to enable root-data partitioning on an
entry system:
