Design-I
LAB ASSIGNMENTS
ASSIGNMENT CATEGORY I INDIVIDUAL
Design model and generate part and assembly drawings for a machine that does nothing.

▪Your proposed solution must include the following:

▪ At least three shaft designs.
▪ One Pulley and Belt drive system, designed.
▪ Calculations and selection for bearings
▪ Use of gears is optional. Calculations for gear drive isn’t necessary.
Take the following as your input:
▪ The machine needs to fit inside a 250 mm x 500 mm setup.
▪ It should take a input power of ABC Watts @ 500 rpm as input. Where ABC is your Roll. No.
▪ The input speed needs to be reduced 5 times in at least 2 stages.
▪ Use minimal design conditions (least conservative) for each element. Do not exceed a factor of
safety of 1.2.
▪ Design shafts for a fatigue life of no more than 50000 cycles.
▪ Take loads due to belt/ pulley into consideration.
Follow the following guidelines for location, Magnitude and Direction of load for your design.

¼ from right 1/3 from left 1/3 from right midpoint

EVEN ab+c kN downwards -- -- b+c Nm ccw
ODD -- ab-c kN downwards 10*c Nm cw --
PRIME ab-c Nm cw -- bc kN downwards

Here abc is your roll number.

▪Deliverables:
▪ A .pdf file containing orthographic drawings of your machine (assembly and part).
▪ A .mp4 file showing your machine in motion.
▪ A .pdf file, that includes all the numerical calculations. Numerical should be solved by hand on
paper. State all the assumptions made in a word file and include it as the first page of your pdf.
▪ The second page of the pdf must include all the data obtained from the calculation summarized
For eg.
▪ Shaft 1: diameter- 5mm
material ASTM 1350
factor of safety 1.15, etc
▪ Submission of any relevant simulation results with proper conclusion drawn from it will be
rewarded accordingly.
ASSIGNMENT CATEGORY II TEAM
▪Form Teams of 3 or 4. Maximum number of teams possible is 13.

▪This Assignment is targeted towards the client handling and documentation section of Machine
Design.

▪ As a part of their Lab Assignment, your seniors had completed a project on Design of Two-Stage
Plastic Shredder.

▪Your assignment is to complete the project.

▪Objectives:
▪ Form a one to one correspondence to a team of your immediate seniors.
▪ Extract all relevant information from them regarding the project they had completed.
▪ Use the data, information, files and any resources they provide to:
▪ They have completed designs of individual components, your task is to create a basic layout of
the machine shop. (refer Industrial Engineering Management Course for more details.)
▪ Make solid or working models to show how your machine system will be set up.
▪ Complete detailed project report.
▪Deliverables:
▪ A .pdf file showing your plant layout.
▪ A .igf file showing how you’ve integrated the machines. This includes two stages of machine, a
single power source and incoming, transferring and outgoing conveyors.
▪ A .pdf file, the detailed report. The report must incorporate all the norms of the department’s
report format.
