ORG 1
THE LOGO
The logo is composed of two parts the image and the text,
those two parts are inseparable. The ESN logo is copyrighted
at European level and ESN has the rights on the design that
was voted at the Annual General Meeting in 2006.

COMPOSITION OF THE LOGO

The full text is: I*ESN International Exchange Erasmus Student Network

and consists of the following colours:

Furthermore, a logo can only exist, and be recognised by everyone, if it remains consistent with
its image as it was created by Koewijden-Postma.

This is why organisations stick to a unique and unchangeable design, so that everyone can spot
their identity from a distance and this shows that throughout the association they have the same
principles, values and expectations.

THE STAR
As mentioned, the text is inseparable from the logo, so people may feel restricted in using it for
different applications. Therefore ESN also has an emblem, which gives more flexibility for print-
ing, developing PR-material, publicity etc. due to its form and non-verbal communication.
However, in order to speak as one voice, as one network, ESN members should use it in a consist-
ent way that is clear and obvious to others. This means: not to change the colours and their order,
not to rotate or transform the star, which is actually a square, into a circle.

APPLICATION OF THE LOGO AND EMBLEM

a. Internal applications:
People might want to apply changes to improve, adjust, or
add something to the original logo. But in order to really
have a ‘skin’ as an organisation or network, the design of
the logo is not to be touched. Still, there are ways in which
one can overcome this issue by using some creativity, the important thing is not to touch the
design itself:

Besides the logo, the emblem and star also represent ESN’s corporate design. As this easily recog-
nisable sign doesn’t need words to be understood, it is more flexible in its applications:

LOGO INSIDE THE STAR SIGN INSIDE THE STAR PART OF THE STAR THAT IS
RECOGNISABLE

For the usage of the corporate identity in printed material you also have to take in account that
you need to use certain margin area’s around the logo or star, as showed below here:

b. External applications:

There are certain regulations for external usage of the Corporate Identity. The ESN logo is copy-
righted and ESN AISBL transfered this copyright ownership to the sections. This means that in
accordance with the developer, Koeweiden-Postma, a few rules have been elaborated in order
for ESN to use the corporate design freely on PR-material:

• Logos can be used freely for all communications, i.e. websites, leaflets, posters...
• Logos can be used freely for freebies/gadgets (merchandise given for free)
• Logos cannot be used for productions aimed at making a profit
• Logos represent the unity and integrity of the network, thus they can be used only and
exclusively in accordance with the Principles of ESN
(i.e. not with political, sexual, discriminatory, racist or sexist purposes etc.)

Thus, the logo belongs to the sections and – in the sections’ interest – is not to be transferred
to third parties, such as Erasmus students, International Relations Offices, sponsors etc. without
the section’s supervision.

ESN AISBL also kindly asks the sections to inform them about the production of merchandise
containing the logo.
