METHOD OF MEMORIZING

THE

MATERIA MEDIC A.

A. L. 3r<)XK0E.
nv M.D.
&BADt*lT£ OF THE HAHNEMANN MEDICA). COLLEGE OP PHILADELPHIA,
MEMEEI. OP THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OP HOMOEOPATHY, ETC.

LOUISVILLE:

PRINTED BY JOHN P. MORTON AND COMPANY.

1882
DEDICATION.

Dr. W. L. Breyfogle, of
TO once a preceptor, always a
Louisville, Ky.,
counselor and
friend, this little work is affectionately dedicated,
the author being actuated by the same apprecia-
tion of distinguished services and ability which
has led the medical profession to accord to him
its highest honors no less than by an exalted per-

sonal regard derived from a continued intimacy

with and knowledge of his private life and char-
acter.
(iii)
INTRODUCTORY.

AX observer would find little pleasure in

contemplating' the shapeless mass
upon which the sculptor begins — the un-
cultivated eye failing to understand the
possibilities lying dormant in the rude block
of marble until the skillful strokes of the
artisan begin to transform its crude propor-
tions into a something with a semblance of
light and shade. Then attention would be
invited, and as curves and outlines became
more delicate and more gracefully rounded,
all else would be forgot in the contempla-

tion of gradually awakening beauty.

So a study possessing the capabilities of
becoming the most interesting in science
seems at first a huge and uninviting mass
indeed, until the nucleus around which the
science is to assume form and symmetry is
established, continues a veritable "pons asi-
norum." 'T is toward the lightening of this

first load, as well as the consequent hasten-

(v)
vi INTRODUCTORY.

ing of the denouement, that this little work

is directed, its object, as it were, being
to furnish mental leverage with which to

pry into placeponderous foundation-

the
stones of an imposing structure; or, if you
and to flavor the dry husks of
will, to soften

Materia Medica, producing a sort of pap

both palatable to and easily assimilated by
the tender and unformed faculties.
The "Key-Notes" now in vogue appear
to have been by their very condensation
divested of all handles of which Memory
may lay hold. My Rules have been,
1. To give ten to thirty key-notes of
each drug, treating preferably the "emer-
gency " remedies and those with complicated
pathogeneses.
To acrosticize.
2.

To rhyme.
3.

4. To place the most important word of

each line either at its acrostic or rhyming

end.
Never has practicality or terseness been
made secondary to any of the elements
mentioned (a fact made patent by the too
evident lack of all save phonetic aspect to
many of the rhymes, no less than by the
INTRODUCTORY. vii

absence of scanning properties noticeable in

some of the verses, all laws of poetry being
sacrificed to the production of jingle).
I believe the six hundred or more char-
acteristics herein contained will be acquired
in one fourth the usual time. Then, when
the subject-matter is well in hand, reason
will easily step in and dethrone the rude
rhymes which will have served their pur-
pose.*
The work will stand or fall upon its mer-
its, as all things must. Meantime let him
who would laugh recall to mind how often
he has been assisted by the little verse,

Thirty days hath September,

April, June, and November;
All the rest have thirty-one,
Save February alone,
Which hath twenty-eight in fine,
Till leap-year gives it twenty-nine.

*No less illustrious precedents than Dr. Franklin and

Prof. B. L. Gildersleeve can be referred to in similar
works. Dr. F., in Poor Richard's Almanac, and Prof.
Gildersleeve (now of Johns Hopkins University, Balti-
more), author of the present standard Latin Grammar,
wherein the rules are frequently converted into rhyme.
