EXERCISE 4.1
Question : 1
Complete the last column of the table.
Question : 2
Check whether the value given in the brackets is a solution to the given equation or
not..
n + 5 = 19 (n=1)
7n + 5 = 19 (n= – 2)
LHS = 1 + 5 = 6 LHS = 7(– 2) + 5 =
RHS = 19 (– 14) + 5 = (-9)
∴LHS ≠RHS RHS = 19
Ans : No, n= 1 is not ∴LHS ≠ RHS
the solution. Ans : No, n = -2 is not a
solution.
7n + 5 = 19 ( n=2) 4p – 3 = 13 (p = 1)
LHS = 7 x 2 + 5 = 19 LHS= 4 x 1 – 3 =1 RHS = (e) ,(f)
RHS = 19 13 Home
∴ LHS = RHS LHS ≠RHS Work
Ans : Yes, n = 2 is the Ans : No, p = 1 is not
solution. the solution.

EXERCISE – 4.1
(1) let p = 1 ,
LHS = 5(1) + 2 = 7 ≠ 17
∴LHS ≠ RHS
∴p = 1 is not a solution.
(2) let p =2
LHS = 5(2) +2 = 12 ≠ 17
∴LHS ≠ RHS
∴ p = 2 is not a solution.
(3 ) Let p = 3
LHS = 5(3) + 2 = 17
∴LHS = RHS
∴ P = 3 is the solution of the equation.
Question :3
Solve the following equations by trial and errror method.
(2) 3m – 14 = 14
HOME WORK
Question : 4
Write equations for the following statements
2. 2 subtracted from y is 8.
y–2=8
3. Ten times a is 70
10a = 70
(5 ) to (9) H.W
(i) p + 4 = 15
The sum of numbers p and 4 is 25.
(ii) m– 7 = 3
7 subtracted from m is 3.
(iii) 2m = 7
Two times m is 7
(iv) m/5 = 3
The number m divided by 5 gives 3.
