Introductory Message
Welcome to Mathematics for Grade 7!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Cadiz City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults)
in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Mathematics Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal
or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to
the learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Mathematics Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning

even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and
engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read
and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the
assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Translating English Phrases to Mathematical Phrases and English Sentences
to Mathematics Sentences, and Vice Versa

I. Learning Competency with Code

Translates English phrases to mathematical phrases and English sentences to
mathematical sentences, and vice versa

II. Background Information for Learners

Algebra makes use of symbols and expressions so that English/verbal phrases
and sentences can be translated into mathematical phrases and sentences and vice
versa.
Algebraic expression is a group of terms separated by a plus or minus sign.
This term is either a constant (number) or a variable (letter) or a combination of
constant and variables multiplied together.

The chart below shows some of the words used to indicate the mathematical
operations or relations:

Symbol Meaning
+ addition, plus, increased by, added to, the sum of, more
than,
– subtraction, minus, decreased by, subtracted from, fewer
than, less than, diminished by, the difference of
×, •, ( ) multiplication, times, multiplied by, the product of, of
/, ÷ division, divided by, ratio of, the quotient of, per
= equals, is equal to, is
< is less than
> is greater than
≤ is less than or equal to, is at most
≥ is greater than or equal to, is at least
≠ is not equal to

Look closely at these phrases using the four operations. Each phrase tells you to
operate on two numbers. Look for the words of and and to find the numbers. The
number after of is written first.

• the sum of a and b means 𝑎𝑎 + 𝑏𝑏

• the difference of a and b means 𝑎𝑎 − 𝑏𝑏
• the product of a and b means 𝑎𝑎(𝑏𝑏) or 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎
𝑎𝑎
• the quotient of a and b means 𝑎𝑎 ÷ 𝑏𝑏 or
𝑏𝑏

Examples:
English Phrase Mathematical Phrase
Eight added to three times a number 𝑛𝑛 3𝑛𝑛 + 8
The difference of 𝑥𝑥 and 4 𝑥𝑥 − 4
The product of a number 𝑦𝑦 and 3 increased by 5 𝑦𝑦(3) + 5 or 3y + 5
Mathematical
English Sentence
Sentence
Two thirds of a number 𝑛𝑛 is 10. 2
𝑛𝑛 = 10
3
The difference of a number and 4 is greater than 6. 𝑛𝑛 − 4 > 6 (may use any
variable)
The product of a number and 2 is less than or equal to 2𝑥𝑥 ≤ 𝑥𝑥 + 2 (may use
2 more than a number any variable)
