Topic 1. Sentence and Kinds of Sentences

*Sentence: A group of words which makes


complete sense is called a sentence.

*Kinds of Sentences:
There are four kinds of sentences:
1) Assertive or (Declarative) sentences
2) Interrogative sentences
3) Imperative sentences
4) Exclamatory sentences

1)Assertive (or Declarative) sentences: -


A sentence that says or states something is
called an assertive (or declarative)
sentence. An assertive sentence can be
either positive or negative.

Eg:-i) We play cricket in the evening.


2) Interrogative sentences: - An
interrogative sentence asks a question.
Eg:-i) Why do you make noise?

3. Imperative Sentences: - An imperative


sentence expresses a command, a request
or an advice.
E.g.: - i) Show me your notebook.
(command)
ii)Please bring a glass of water.
(request)
iii)Never tell a lie. (advice)

4.Exclamatory Sentence: - An exclamatory


sentence expresses some strong feeling.
Eg:- i)What a grand building!

Ex.1 State the kind of Sentence: (H.W to be


done in the book)
1.Do not disturb me.
Ans: Imperative Sentence.

2.Sunita sings sweetly.


Ans: Declarative Sentence

3.What a lovely rose it is!

4.Children fly kites in the evening.
