Introduction

Visitors to Scotland will definitely visit


Edinburgh. Edinburgh is the capital city. It has an
interesting history and there are lots of great things
to see and do.

Where is it?

Edinburgh is in the East of Scotland. It has a


population of only five hundred thousand people. It is
built on two extinct volcanoes; Castle rock and
Arthur’s seat.

History

Edinburgh is very old. It dates from the 7th


Century. A group of people called the Gododdin built a
hill fort on top of castle rock. They named it Din
Eidyn. The name Edinburgh comes from Din Eidyn.

There are lots of interesting things to see


and do in Edinburgh. You can visit Edinburgh castle.
The hill fort built by the Gododdin has changed over
the years into the spectacular castle you see today.

Mons Meg

Mons Meg is the name of enormous cannon in


Edinburgh castle. Its diameter is over half a metre
and it fired cannonballs weighing 175 kilograms. It is
one of the biggest cannons in the World.

Harry Potter

J.K. Rowling is the writer of the Harry


Potter books. She lives in Cramond in Edinburgh and
she wrote the books in Edinburgh. Many of the people
and places in the stories were inspired by Edinburgh.
You can even go on a Harry Potter tour of Edinburgh.

You can walk around this fantastic palace.


Holyrood Palace is the place where the Queen stays
when she comes to Edinburgh. It has been royal
palace since the sixteenth century.

The road that goes from the castle to


Holyrood Palace is called the Royal Mile. It is
exactly 1 mile (1.6km) long. It is full of
interesting shops. It is one of the busiest tourist
places in Edinburgh.

The Edinburgh Festival

The Edinburgh Festival is a theatre, comedy and


performing arts festival which happens every August
in Edinburgh. It lasts for three weeks and there are
more than 3500 different shows. There are also lots
of Street performers. Last year 2.7 million people
visited Edinburgh for the festival.

Food

If you are brave you can try haggis. Haggis is


Scotland’s most famous dish. It is like a large sausage
made from the heart, lungs and liver of a sheep
mixed with oats and spices. It sounds disgusting but
tastes delicious.

Teacake. It is a chocolate covered marshmallow
biscuit.

Conclusion

Edinburgh is a wonderful place to visit. It has


wonderful history and there are lots of things to
see and do. If you can, you should go there.
