Learning Objective 2.6: The student will develop map skills by using globes and
maps of the world and the United States to locate

a) the seven continents and the five oceans;

b) the equator, the Prime Meridian, and the four

hemispheres

P In this interactive white board activity, the children will touch the board to place
e continent and ocean names to their correct spots on the map. They will also identify
d which oceans and continents are in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres with and
a without a map.

P Activity In this activity, the students will be learning about the 7

e continents and 5 oceans. To teach the class, I will be using a
d SmartTech interactive lesson from Smart Board.
a
g
o ● This activity will be done as a class on the front rug in
front of the Smart Board. To introduce the topic, we
g
y will watch a fun video song from YouTube about the
continents and oceans.

● Next I will pull up the interactive slides from Smart

Board to breakdown the video in order to teach the
geography of the world (slides 1 and 2 are just
introductory)

● Slide 3 has the names of the 7 continents covered up

but the ink can be erased away. I want to see if
students can remember from the video which
continent is which. A student will come up to the board
and erase the ink to reveal a continent. Before they do,
I will ask the class what continent they think will be
revealed. Slide 4 is the same but with the oceans
instead. I will continue the same strategy of a student
erasing the ink and the class guessing what will be
revealed.

● Slide 5 is a drag and match of the continents. I will take

a volunteer to place a continent name where it
belongs. There will be 7 volunteers total. Slide 6 is the
same but with oceans. I will again use the same
strategy as I did for slide 5 for interaction.

● Slide 7 is about hemispheres. This will be something I

will have to introduce myself to the class. Once they
understand the difference between the Northen and
Southern Hemispheres, I will use 7 students to come
up and mark the continents according to the directions
on the slide.

● Slide 8 is a matching of ocean names and continent

names without a map. This is to help students
differentiate between oceans and continents.

● As for teaching about the Prime Meridian, equator, and

Eastern and Western Hemispheres, I think slides 5 and
6 would be a good place to add in this additional
information.

○ I want students to make the connection that

the Norther and Southern Hemispheres are
separated by the Equator. I also want them to
understand that the Prime Meridian separates
the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.

● **If a student thinks a match that has been made is

incorrect on any slide during the lesson, I will give
them the opportunity to correct it.**

● To conclude the lesson, the students will be given a

large blank map for a art project that will be completed
at school. Students will tale home and label the
following on the map:

○ 7 continents

○ 5 oceans

○ 4 hemispheres

○ Equator

○ Prime Meridian

■ This is part of a hands on project based

on something I did in elementary
school to solidify my understanding of
world geography.
