Activity No. 5 Management of Poisoning (Supportive Mgt)
1. Explain why the following occurs during/after poisoning:
a. Acidosis – happens when there is too much acid in the body fluids. Metabolic acidosis resulting from a toxin arises from either an excess production (or addition) of an acid or decreased acid elimination. The pathways involved in this are several and usually include the liver and kidneys, and impaired hepatic or renal function can amplify the acidosis. b. Electrolyte imbalance – electrolytes play a vital role in maintaining homeostasis in the body. Electrolyte imbalance, or water-electrolyte imbalance, occurs when there is an abnormality in the concentration of electrolytes in the body which may cause by certain toxins or toxicants.
2. Why should the following symptoms be immediately managed?
a. Hypothermia – a condition that occurs when the body temperature drops below 95°F or 35°C. Major complications can result from this drop in temperature, including death. Hypothermia is particularly dangerous because it affects the ability of a person to think clearly. This can decrease the likelihood of seeking medical help, that’s why it should be managed immediately. b. Pain – is a general term that describes uncomfortable sensations in the body. It stems from activation of the nervous system. Pain can range from annoying to debilitating. It may feel like a sharp stab or dull ache. It may also be described as throbbing, pinching, stinging, burning, or sore. Whatever the degree of the pain threshold of a person, pain should be managed as immediately when felt.
