PLACES TO VISIT

• Ancient Theatre of Larissa

A highly notable and large theatre on Greek ground, the First Ancient Theatre of
Larissa was built on the slope of Frourio hill (or 'Fortress' hill), at the fortified citadel
of the ancient city. Apparently, it was fitted into the city web of ancient Larissa, as
its parodoi (passageways, public entrances) were linked to the city's large
processional ways. According to inscription testimonies, the construction dates to
the early third century BC. During the first centuries, the theatre served a dual
purpose: apart from theatrical performances, it also hosted the assemblies of the
senior regional authority, the so called “Koinon” of the Thessalians. At the end of
the first century BC it was transformed into a roman arena and thus stayed in use
until the late third century AD, whereas theatrical performances and other events
took place in the town's in ornate Second Ancient Theatre.

• G.I. Katsigras Museum – Municipal Art Gallery of Larissa

The Municipal Gallery of Larissa- G.I. Katsigras Museum, from the first year of its
foundation in 1983, till today has been fully integrated into the local society having
also contributed to the full establishment of fine arts in the town of Larissa and its
wide region in numerous ways.

The collection G.I. Katsigras, a donation of the well known surgeon and collector to
the city of Larissa, is one of the most significant in the country and unique in the
periphery. It comprises 781 paintings, carvings and drafts of important Greek artists
for the period between 1850 and 1950. In 1981 the doctor and collector G.I. Katsigras
donated his remarkable collection to the municipality of Larissa. After his death the
collection was enriched by 1170 books on art, as well as the invaluable furniture
which belonged to the renowned Heinrich Schliemann bought by the collector in
1955. As for his personal medical library it was donated to the Medical Association
of Larissa.

Through a profound appeal to the senses the visitor is able to follow the course of
Modern Greek Art, the evolution of trends and techniques and the influences it
received by many schools and European fashions with a specific historical and
social context.
