Question 1 (30 Marks) 30/06/2016

A 300x600mm rectangular fixed ended beam has a free span of 5000mm.

Design this beam in flexure using the information provided below:

Fcu = 25MPa; Fy = 450 MPa

Live load = 35KN/m
Dead load = 25KN/m
Cover = 25mm
Available reinforcement: Y20 and Y10 only.
Provide the main reinforcement, shear and defection calculations, including the minimun length
for curtailling the maximum reinforcement.

Question 3 (Marks 35)

A flange beam of 600x900mm is 8m long with one end fixed and another one in cantilever. This
latter is supporting a 255mm cantilever slab as shown on sketch above. The rectangular part of
the beam is connected rigidly to a 600x400mm column positioned 3.2m from the cantilever side.
The column height is 5m and is rigidly anchored into a massive foundation base. Design the
beam according to SANS 10100 using the following characteristics:
Live load = 3KN/m2,
Fcu = 30MPa; Fy = 450 MPa.
(Assume beam as propped beam with cantilever).
