Introduction
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the thirty-second
president of the United States (1932–1945). He was
noted as one of the leading political figures of the
twentieth century nationally and internationally, who
contributed significantly to overcoming the global
economic crisis and the defeat of Nazi Germany
during World War II. He is also the only president in
the history of the United States to be appointed for
four consecutive terms.
Background info
Born in a wealthy and privileged family in New
York, that placed great emphasis on public service.
He's been home-schooled till the age of 14.
He graduated from Harvard University in 1903 with
a BA in history.
During his studies at the uni, he met his future wife
Eleanor Roosevelt (who was his fifth cousin).
Attended Columbia University Law, passing the bar
examination in 1907.
Practised law in a New York law firm for three
years.
Became seriously ill with poliomyelitis, lost use of
his legs and was confined to a wheelchair for the
rest of his life.
In 1910 he joined the New York Senate and became
governor of New York city.
Accomplishments
F.D.R. was a major contributor of helping America get
out of the great depression by creating The New Deal
which was a series of programs, public work projects,
financial reforms, and regulations enacted in the United
States between 1933 and 1939. Major federal programs
and agencies included the Civilian Conservation Corps
(CCC), the Civil Works Administration (CWA), the Farm
Security Administration (FSA), the National Industrial
Recovery Act of 1933 (NIRA) and the Social Security
Administration (SSA). They provided support for
farmers, the unemployed, youth and the elderly. The
New Deal included new constraints and safeguards on
the banking industry and efforts to re-inflate the
economy after prices had fallen sharply. New Deal
programs included both laws passed by Congress as
well as presidential executive orders during the first
term of the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Accomplishments
Also brought in progressive ideas = unemployment
insurance, old-age insurance, minimum wage,
conservation and development of natural resources
and restrictions on child labor - all still around today.
Employed 2.75 million young men - 18-24 - in
outdoor govt. camps to keep them out of
trouble,projects including firefighting, reforestation,
flood control, swamp drainage and development of
national parks
During his presidency,
the US social security
system was created.
He arrested financial
panic through the
emergency banking act.
Accomplishments
He established a national
minimum wage in order to
improve living conditions for
low-income families.

Along with Churchill


and Stalin, he led the
allied coalition to
victory in WWII.
