לא ָלה המסופוטמיתרחבי דרום ערב .אל זה מקביל ֵ מהאלפבית הפיניקי .הוא היה בשימוש ברחבי חצי
ישתר ולאלה הכנענית עשתורת ,הנזכרת גם בכתבי ִא ַ האי ערב מאות שנים לפני הופעת האסלאם במאה
אּוגַ ִרית .ואולם רוב האלים אותם העריצו תושבי השביעית לספירה ,אז הוחלף באלפבית הערבי,
דרום ערב היו אלוהויות מקומיות ,שלעתים סגדו שמקורו ארמי .הכתב העתיק של דרום ערב הוא
להן רק באזור מצומצם מאוד .יש לציין כי המקורות המקור לכתב ההברתי האתיופי ,המשמש עד היום.
העומדים לרשותנו אינם מספקים מידע רב — מדובר ברחבי ערב הסעודית התגלו אלפי כתובות סלע
בעיקר בכתובות הקדשה ,המציינות רק את שמות שנכתבו באלפבית הדרום־ערבי.

באיזו מידה אפשר לייחס את המעבר למונותאיזם
להשפעת היהדות? שאלה זו נדונה רבות במחקר.
מינוח דתי יהודי מתחיל להופיע בכתובות דרום־
ערביות במאות השלישית או הרביעית לספירה ואינו
שכיח .הוא כולל מספר אזכורים של עם ישראל ,וכן
את הכינוי לאל "אדון היהודים" (רב יהד) ,המופיע
חמנָ ן .נוסף על כך ,בחלק מהכתובות מופיעות לצד ַר ָ
נוסחאות יהודיות ,כגון "אמן" או "שלום" ,או הפועל
בר"א במשמעות של בריאה .אדם בשם יהודה יַ ּכֻ ף
בנה לו ארמון והנציח את המעשה בכתובת דרום־
ערבית יפה ,שבמרכזה מופיע גם כיתוב קצר בעברית.
אבל ישנה רק כתובת דרום־ערבית אחת ,המתעדת
ייסוד בית קברות מיוחד ליהודים ,שמשתמשת באופן
שיטתי באוצר מילים שמקורו בעברית ובארמית.
לבסוף ,במאה השישית לספירה ,עם הכיבוש
האתיופי של ִחמיַ ר ,מופיעות בכתובות המלכותיות
נוסחאות נוצריות ,הכוללות אזכורים של השילוש
חמנָ ן.

מקורות ההשראה
ריקוד ,שגולפו על עמודי המקדשים החל מהמאות במהלך האלף השלישי לפנה"ס ,תרבויות
התשיעית–השמינית לפנה"ס .הדימויים החזותיים מסופוטמיה ומצרים בנו מקדשים וארמונות
במקדשים כוללים בין היתר דמויות אנושיות ,יעלים, ופיתחו שיטות מתוחכמות לייצור פסלים ,כלי
צבאים ,פרים ,יענים ועץ החיים — בדוגמה החוזרת חרס וחותמות ,כמו גם שיטות כתב מורכבות .מנגד,
על עצמה כנראה בשל מה שמכונה "אימת החלל". דרום ערב באותה עת עמדה בפתחה של תקופת
הדימויים הללו מכסים את כל שטחי העמודים הברונזה .תושביה גרו בכפרים ,בבקתות שדופנו
שבחצרות המקדשים ואת דלתותיהם ,והיו להם באבני גוויל ,וייצרו מצבות ופסלים בסגנון סכמטי
כנראה גם משמעויות דתיות. שהונחו בקברים ,נוסף על כלי חרס פשוטים.
דוגמאות של אמנות הפיסול מהתקופה הנדונה התוכניות והארגון המרחבי של אותם כפרים
אפשר לראות בפסלוני אבן קטנים של דמויות התאפיינו בחלוקה לאזורים המיועדים למגורים
יושבות ,אותם החוקרים מכנים "האבות הקדמונים" ולפעילויות שונות — דבר המעיד על ראשיתן של

נוצרו .ייתכן שהפסלונים הללו הציגו ֵא ֵלי בית שהגנו השני לפנה"ס.
על המאמינים ונשמרו במרחבי פולחן ביתיים או כבר בממצאים העתיקים ביותר של אמנות דרום
הוקדשו למקדשים .לחלופין ,אפשר שאלה היצגים ערב אפשר להבחין במרכיבים השייכים למסורת
של מתים ,המשתתפים במשתה בחיים שאחרי האמנותית של המזרח הקרוב הקדום .ההיצגים
המוות .השערה זו נשענת על המסורת הנפוצה של החזותיים המופיעים במקדשים הידועים כיום בשם
ייצוג אמנותי ברחבי סוריה וכנען בראשית האלף ַּבנָ את ָעד ("בנות ָעד" ,אב קדום מיתי) ,בעיקר באזור
הראשון לפנה"ס; מסורת זו הניחה כי נפש המת הגַ 'ווף שבצפון תימן ,אך גם באתרים שונים בתחומי
האלים.

על כמה מן הפסלונים כתובים שמות פרטיים המסופוטמית .תרבות דרום ערב העתיקה אימצה את

אלו שהחלו לייצר אותם בדרום ערב .מכל מקום, שמם המודרני של המקדשים בשפה הערבית
כמה מאפיינים אמנותיים ,בהם הצגת הדמויות ניתן להם על ידי תושבי הארץ ומתייחס לדמויות
כשהן יושבות ללא תנועה ,הצורה הקובייתית של נשיות הניצבות על גבי ַּכנים בתנוחות עמידה או 108
לפנה"ס ,ואפשר לראות בהם המשכיות של דגמים הפסלונים והייצוג חסר הפרופורציות של פלג הגוף
קדומים לצד גיוון סגנוני .תופעה זו מעידה על העליון והרגליים ,מלמדים על כך שהפסלונים יוצרו
חיוניותה של המסורת האמנותית ועל כשרונם של בדרום ערב.

אומני שבא ַ
שבמהלך האלף הראשון לפנה"ס פעלו בדרום ערב חפצי ברונזה שהוקדשו לאלים
אּומנים מומחים בשירות המקדשים שהיוו את מרכזי
החיים החברתיים. אמונותיהם הדתיות של תושבי דרום ערב העתיקה
הפסלים הוקדשו כנראה לאלים .הם נעדרים באו לידי ביטוי ,בין היתר ,בהקדשת מצבות מאבן
מאפיינים היכולים להצביע על זיהוי עם אלוהות וברונזה ,וכן פסלים וצלמיות בדמות אדם ,למקדשים
מסוימת ,ואפשר שייצגו את המאמינים שהקדישו השונים.
אותם .המאמין הקדיש את דמותו לאל כאות תודה מבין פסלי הברונזה ,המפורסמים ביותר הם הפסלים
על חסד שעשה עמו או על תפילה שנענתה ,או אולי מהמאה השישית לפנה"ס שהתגלו במקדש ַאווָ ם
כמעשה פולחני טהור שאינו תלוי בטובה קודמת למ ַקה .ייצור פסלים
בעיר ַמ ִריּב והוקדשו לאל ַא ַ
מצדו של האל .אפשרות אחרת היא שהקדשת פסל דומים נמשך בדרום ערב עד סוף האלף הראשון
ממלכת ַאקסּום שבאתיופיה .מבסיסם שבאקסום, בין פרס לקיסרות הביזנטית שררה יריבות על
האתיופים פלשו לדרום ערב במאה השלישית שליטה בנתיבי הסחר שהובילו מחופי הים התיכון
לספירה ,ושוב לאחר מכן במאה השישית לספירה, להודו .יריבות זו ,שהחלה במאה הרביעית לספירה,
אחרי שממלכת אקסום אימצה את הדת הנוצרית. השפיעה על התפתחויות מדיניות ודתיות בכל
עדות לתקופת השליטה האתיופית אפשר למצוא המזרח הקרוב .תחום שליטתה של פרס השתרע
בכותרות העמודים הגדולות שבמסגד הגדול בצנעא, מסוריה עד הודו ,בעוד האימפריה הביזנטית
בירת תימן המודרנית .הכותרות הללו היו שייכות שלטה באגן המזרחי של הים התיכון ,עד גבולות 112

המוטיב הספרותי המבליט את מעמדו המדיני של ביותר .הוא זכה לפרשנויות רבות במסורות
המלך על ידי תיאור משלחת שהגיעה לחלוק לו כבוד כתּובות וביצירות אמנות ממזרח וממערב .הבסיס
מארץ רחוקה נמצא גם בכתובות מלכי אשור מאותה לפרשנויות מאוחרות אלה הוא הסיפור הקצר
תקופה .עם זאת ,ההשוואה למקורות נוספים במקרא המופיע בספר מלכים א' ,פרק י .פיתוחו של סיפור
ומחוצה לו מבליטה את היסוד המקורי בסיפור זה במסורות השונות משפיע על קריאת הפרשה
המשלחת השבאית — הבשמים שהביאה המלכה המקראית ומקשה על החוקרים לראות בה מקור
לירושלים כחלק עיקרי ממתנותיה. היסטורי מהימן .ואולם ,אף על פי שהנטייה הרווחת
אפשר שסיפור מלכת שבא בגרסתו המקורית נכלל היא לראות במלכים א' י ,א-יג בדיה שאין בה עניין

ֵ להיסטוריונים ,ישנם חוקרי מקרא הסבורים שיש

או יועציו ( .)Lemaire 1995חיבור שכזה היה משתלב הכללי של המזרח הקרוב הקדום ,מן הראוי לבחון את
היטב בכתיבה ההיסטורית במזרח הקרוב הקדום. תוכנו של הסיפור .פסוקים יא-יב ,הפותחים במילת
אולם ,על מנת להעריך את אמינותו ,עלינו להשוות החיבור "וְ גַ ם" ומתארים את אניות הצי של חירם מלך
את הנאמר בו עם ידיעותינו על ההיסטוריה המדינית צור ,נראים כאינם שייכים לסיפור המקורי על מלכת
של המזרח הקרוב הקדום באותה עת. שבא .אפשר לשים לב גם לכך שכמה מטבעות לשון

(מלכים א' יא ,ז-כב). הללו ,ניוותר עם מה שנראה כסיפור מקורי המתאר
שלמה ,שלקח לו את בת פרעה לאישה (מלכים א' ג, משלחת רמת דרג מממלכת שבא הרחוקה ,תוך
א; ט ,טז ,כד; והשוו יא ,יט) ,נכנס לתחום ההשפעה הדגשת חוכמתו המדינית של שלמה .את המונחים

אלה מאפשרים לראות את סיפור המשלחת מהדרום ארץ שבא נזכרת לראשונה במקור אשורי מן המאה
הרחוק ,שבאה לחלוק כבוד לשלמה בירושלים ,באור השמינית לפנה"ס .זוהי כתובת המזכירה שיירה של
חדש .אף על פי שאין הוכחה לקיומה של ממלכת מאתיים גמלים שעשתה את דרכה מתימא ומשבא
שבא במאה העשירית לפנה"ס ,האפשרות הזאת ינדנּו לגדת הפרת התיכון (Younger 2003: לאזור ִח ָ
נראית סבירה יותר ויותר. .)281-282אף על פי שאין בידינו עדויות ישירות
ואולם ,בין הכתובות המעטות המגיעות מאותה לסחר עם ממלכת שבא במקורות האשוריים מהמאה
תקופה אין כל זכר למלך או מלכה ששלטו בשבא העשירית לפנה"ס ,מחקרו המפורט של מריו ליוורני
או למשלחת שיצאה משבא לירושלים .נוסף על כך, בנוגע למקורות מהמאה התשיעית לפנה"ס הראה,
תיאור של מלכה שעמדה בראש משלחת משבא כי שיירות סוחרים שהובילו קטורת ובשמים הגיעו
מעלה קושי רב .בכתובות דרום־ערביות מהמחצית לאזור הפרת התיכון סביב 890לפנה"ס לכל המאוחר,
הראשונה של האלף הראשון לפנה"ס לא מתועדת ינדנּו

אינו אלא טועה .מאי מלכת שבא? מלכותא דשבא" בחמישים השנים האחרונות .הממצא הארכיאולוגי

וק ַת ָּבאן) לממלכה שחלשה על רכס ההרים הסמוך ַ לפנה"ס עד שנת 570לספירה בקירוב ,ממלכת ִחמיַ ר
(חמיַ ר).לחוף בדרום־מערב תימן ִ הייתה הכוח המדיני העיקרי בדרום ערב .בשלוש
בני ִחמיַ ר התקיימו בעיקר מחקלאות שהייתה מאות השנים האחרונות של תקופה זו ,מאז 350
מפותחת מאוד בחלק זה של דרום ערב הודות לשפע לספירה בקירובִ ,חמיַ ר אף הייתה המעצמה הראשית
גשמי המֹונסּון בקיץ .בירתה של ִחמיַ ר הייתה העיר בחצי האי ערב כולו .מבחינה תרבותית ומדינית ,היא
ַט ָ'פאר ,ששכנה 2750מ' מעל פני הים — כיום כפר המשיכה את המסורת של ממלכת שבא ,הנזכרת
קטן השוכן 130ק"מ דרומית לצנעא .מושבם של במקרא ,שהניחה את היסודות לתרבות דרום ערב
ידן ,ולפיכך הם נשאו מלכי ִחמיַ ר היה בארמון ַר ָ העתיקה סביב 1000לפנה"ס.

לממלכה הקדומה .אנשי ִחמיַ ר כתבו את כתובותיהם שקישרו את דרום ערב עם ארצות הסהר הפורה:
בשפה השבאית ,שהייתה הנפוצה ביותר מבין מצרים ,כנען ,סוריה ומסופוטמיה.
השפות של דרום ערב העתיקה (שבאיתַ ,ק ַת ָּבאנית, בראשיתו היה ִחמיַ ר שבט קטן שחי ברכס ההרים
ַמ ִעיניתֲ ,ח ַצרמּותית ,והניב הדרומי של הערבית בדרום תימן .מנהיגיו של שבט זה הצליחו להשתלט
הקדומה) .לא ברור עד כמה שפת הדיבור של ִחמיַ ר על כס ממלכת שבא לאחר שהרומאים ועוזריהם
הייתה קרובה לשבאית ,ואפשר שהיה זה ניב קדום הנבטים תקפו את ַמ ִריּב ,בירתה ,בשנת 25לפנה"ס.
החמיַ רי שנזכר במקורות של הערבית הדומה לניב ִ מטרת הרומאים הייתה להכיר מקרוב את המרחב
ערביים מימי הביניים. הגיאוגרפי שבין מצרים להודו ולהשתלט על ים סוף
הכתב שבו השתמשו אנשי ִחמיַ ר היה משותף לכל שהיה ציר סחר מבטיח .הסחר הימי ,שהרומאים
שפות דרום ערב — האלפבית הדרום־ערבי העתיק. שקדו על פיתוחו ,החליף במרוצת הזמן את נתיבי
השימוש באותו כתב לכתיבת שפות שונות היה הסחר היבשתי שנמתחו לאורך חצי האי ערב.
מסימני ההיכר של דרום ערב בימי קדם .עובדה זו, הספינות אמנם נעו לאט יותר משיירות הגמלים ,אך
כמו גם אוצר הדימויים המשותף בתחומי האמנות, ההפלגה בים הייתה זולה יותר משום שהיא פטרה
האדריכלות ,הפיסול באבן ,היציקה בברונזה את הסוחרים מהצורך לשלם מכס לשליטי הארצות
והיבטים רבים אחרים של התרבות החומרית, והערים השונות לאורך הדרך ולשכור את שירותיהם
מובילים למסקנה שהעמים השונים של דרום ערב של מתווכים.
חלקו ביניהם תרבות אחידה בבסיסה. המעבר מהסחר היבשתי לסחר הימי שינה גם
את מיקומו של מרכז הכוח המדיני בדרום ערב,

באל־נַ ַמ ַרה בדרום סוריה ,והייתה כנראה לא יותר ַ עלייתה של ִחמיַ ר
מתקיפת אזהרה.
בהמשך המאה הרביעית לספירה פלש צבא ִחמיַ ר האזכור הקדום ביותר של ִחמיַ ר מופיע בכתובת
לעומק חצי האי ערב ודחק את רגליהם של המלכים מחצרמוות המתוארכת למאה הראשונה לפנה"ס
הערביים ששלטו בעמק הפרת בחסות האימפריה ( .)RES 2687בתקופה זו עצמאותה המדינית של
הסאסאנית .סביב 440–420לספירה ,כוחם של מלכי ממלכת ִחמיַ ר ,אשר נוסדה אולי בשנת 110לפנה"ס
ִחמיַ ר עלה עד כדי כך שהם סיפחו לתחום שלטונם (נקודת ההתחלה של מניין שנותיה הרשמי) ,הייתה
את הרמה ההררית במרכז חצי האי ערב ואת חוף עדיין תופעה חדשה .לפני כינון הממלכה ,אזור
הים במערבו .בתקופה זו הורחב גם התואר הרשמי ִחמיַ ר היה חלק מממלכת ַק ַת ָּבאן .היקפה המלא של

באמצע המאה השנייה לספירה ממלכת ַאקסּום
ההתפשטות המהירה של ִחמיַ ר ,תחילה בדרום האתיופית פלשה לחוף המערבי של דרום ערב
ערב ולאחר מכן בצפונה ,יצרה גיוון רב בין קבוצות וסייעה לממלכת שבא לזכות מחדש בעצמאותה.

היו לנתיני שלטון אחד ,הקשר בין ישויות מדיניות לה בדרום ערב.
לפולחנות הדתיים כבר לא היה קיים ,והנאמנות רעׂש מלך לאחר שכבש את חצרמוות אימץ ַׂש ַּמר י ַֻה ִ
לשליט הפכה לגורם המאחד את החברה .מצב זה ידן ,חצרמוות ד'ּו־ר ָ
ַ ִחמיַ ר תואר חדש" :מלך שבא,
גרם לדעיכה מהירה של הפולחנות הישנים :במאות ויַ מנַ ת" ,ולראשונה בהיסטוריה ,כל הארץ המוכרת
השלישית והרביעית לספירה ,היקף המנחות כיום בשם תימן (ואף כמה אזורים מעבר לגבולותיה)
שהובאו למקדשים הוותיקים הצטמצם מאוד, אוחדו תחת שלטון אחד.
והכתובות נטו יותר ויותר להשמיט את אזכורי עלייתו של כוח מדיני חדש בדרום ערב הדאיגה את
האלים בהקשרים המיועדים לכך .מאידך ,באותו זמן ֵ הפרסים והרומיםִ .אמרֻ א אל ַקיְ ס בן ַע ְמר ,מלך ערבי
הופיעו בכתובות לראשונה אזכורי ֵאל יחיד. ששלט בעמק הפרת בחסות האימפריה הפרסית
בחמיַ ר רפורמה דתית עד 384לספירה נערכה ִ הסאסאנית ונשא בתואר "מלך כל הערבים" ,תקף
מרחיקת לכת ,במהלכה אימצה שושלת המלוכה ג'ראן ,העיר של (שבט) ַש ַּמר" ,בשנת 332 את "נַ ָ
דת חדשה .עיקרי האמונה של דת זו מצאו לספירה .מתקפה זו נזכרת בכתובת שהוא הותיר 118
מעשיו של יוסף ,פרק את עולו של המלך ומרד נגדו. ביטוי מעורפל וכללי בכתובות המלכים .ואולם
ג'ראןבתגובה פקד יוסף על צבאו לצור על העיר נַ ָ בכתובותיהם של אנשים פרטיים היא משתקפת
ולדכא את המרד .הצבא נתקל בהתנגדות עזה, כיהדות .בכתובות אלה ניכרת חשיבותם של בית
שאילצה את המלך עצמו להגיע לשדה המערכה המקדש ומוסד הכהונה ,אך ראוי לציין שאין בהן
ולנהל משא ומתן עם תושבי העיר על תנאי כניעה. עדות לאמונה בתחיית המתים.
למרות שנשבע לחון את המורדים ,עם כניעתם התייהדותה של ִחמיַ ר אירעה בימי שלטונו של
הוציא אותם יוסף להורג יחד עם בני משפחותיהם אמן ,אשר מלך יחד עם שני בניוַ :א ִּב ַּכ ִרּב לּכ ַּכ ִרּב י ַֻה ִַמ ִ

של יוסף היה מספר רב יותר של נוצרים מאשר שרוב משפחות האצולה שבהרים התייהדו — דבר
בין אלה שמרדו נגדו .הנוצרים שתמכו ביוסף המצביע על עומק אחיזתה של הדת החדשה בקרב
השתייכו לכנסייה הנסטוריאנית שבסיסה היה אוכלוסיית ִחמיַ ר.

שנשבה והוצא להורג .תבוסתו הסופית של יוסף להכתרתו הרשמית ,הוא אימץ את התואר "מלך כל
אירעה בין 525ל־ 530לספירה .צבא ַאקסּום יצא השבטים".
למסע עונשין שבמהלכו נטבחו תושביה היהודים המלך יוסף ציווה על כל קהילות ִחמיַ ר לשלוח
של ִחמיַ ר באופן שיטתי .במסע הזה נכבשו הערים חיילים לצבאו .הכוח שנשלח על ידי הנוצרים של
ג'ראן. ַט ָ'פארַ ,מ ִריּב (בה נשרף ארמון המלוכה) ונַ ָ ל־ח ִרית' בן ַּכ ְעּב ,עמד להצטרף ג'ראן ,בפיקוד ַא ָ נַ ָ
השליט האתיופי לא ביטל את מעמדה של ִחמיַ ר ל־ח ִרית' על חומרת לצבא המלך ,אולם כאשר עמד ַא ָ

שונים בחצי האי ערב במרותו של ַא ַ

על מנת לשחרר את תימן מהשלטון האתיופי .כוח ּבר ַהא העביר את בירתו לצנעא ,קרוב לאמצע ַא ַ
צבאי פרסי נשלח לתימן והוצב בה כחיל מצב קבוע. ג'ראן ,ובשנת 560בנה בבירתו הדרך בין ַט ָ'פאר לנַ ָ
המושל הפרסי האחרון של תימן התאסלם עוד בחייו החדשה כנסייה מפוארת שנועדה לשמש מוקד
של מוחמד ,כלומר ,לפני שנת .632מאותו זמן ואילך, צליינות מרכזי .הקמתו של מבנה מונומנטלי —
תימן הפכה למחוז נידח של אימפריה אסלאמית אולי הכנסייה הזאת עצמה — מצוינת בכתובת
ל־מ ִדינַ ה ,בצפון־ אדירה שבירתה הראשונה הייתה ַא ַ ּבר ַהא (ַ .)CIS IV 325א ַ
ּבר ַהא המתוארכת למלכות ַא ַ
מערב חצי האי ערב ,ולאחר מכן דמשק שבסוריה גם החליף את לוח השנה הירחי בו ְמעברים חודשים
ובגדאד שבעיראק. מסוימים — הלוח הבבלי שהתקבע בלוח השנה
העברי — בלוח שנה חדש ,יוליאני.
ִחמיַ ר ודתות הייחוד לאחר הופעת האסלאם ּבר ַהא הותירה רושם כנסיית צנעא שנבנתה בידי ַא ַ
עז על בני דורו וצאצאיהם .תיאּוריה הגיעו אלינו דרך
שבט ִחמיַ ר שרד כנראה את הכיבוש האתיופי במאה המסורת המוסלמית ,בה נקראה הכנסייה בשם ַאל־
השישית ,אך נעלם מבימת ההיסטוריה זמן קצר ַק ִליס (מיוונית " ekklesiaכנסייה") .המבנה המרובע
לאחר מכן .במאה העשירית ,כאשר המלומד התימני התנשא לגובה שישים אמה לפי מידת דרום ערב
אל־ה ְמ ָדאני תיאר את
ַ המוסלמי אבו מוחמד אל־חסן ( 20מטר) .קירותיו נבנו מאבנים בצבעים שונים,
חצי האי ערב בחיבורו המקיף ,שבט זה היה לא יותר עם עיטורי בהט בראשם .דלתות נחושת הובילו

מבוא
הקטורת הוקטרה ברחבי תימן בנסיבות דומות, הבערת חומרים ארומטיים על גחלים על מנת
וההבדלים בין אזורים שונים הם בעיקר הבדלי להפיץ ריח היא נוהג עתיק יומין ששורשיו נטועים
מינוח .גם צמחים חיים שימשו בתימן להפצת ריח באמונות השונות הנוגעות לסגולות החיוביות של
(רּוטה) וריחן (בזיליקום),
ָ נעים ,בעיקר ֵּפיגָ ם מצוי הקטורת .המילה המודרנית perfumeמקורה בביטוי
וכן תמציות פרחים שיּוצרו על ידי זיקוק ,כגון מי הלטיני per fumumשפירושו "דרך עשן" — דבר
ורדים. המצביע על כך שהבערת קטורת באש הייתה הדרך
הקטורת שימשה בתימן בהקשרים חברתיים רבים העיקרית ליצור ריח טוב בעת העתיקה.

חייה מושתת על כללים ומנהגים רבים ומפורטים, לסוגים שונים של קטורת היו שימושים שונים.
מנהג נפוץ כמו הקטרת הקטורת השתלב ללא ספק התקיימה הבחנה ברורה בין השימוש בקטורת
במארג מורכב של משמעויות וערכים .אירועים לצורכי קודש ולצורכי חולין ,ורק מעטים הורשו
שונים במעגל החיים נקשרו לריחות ספציפיים להקטיר למטרות פולחן.
שיוחסו להם משמעויות של כפרה או הגנה .לחלק בעולם העתיק הקטורת הייתה מצרך מבוקש ,ודרום
מהריחות יוחסו סגולות מאגיות ,כלומר ,היכולת ערב הייתה היצואנית הגדולה של שניים ממרכיביה
להשפיע על כוחות הרוע. החשובים — המור והלבונה ,שצמחו בה באופן
טבעי .העצים והשיחים מהם מופק השרף המבוקש,
ַמקטרים המשמש להקטרת קטורת ,עדיין צומחים באזור
רמווֶ ת בתימן ובאזור ט'ו ָֹפר בעומאן .מאזורים

חומרי הריח (גושי שרף עצים או זמורות) הונחו על אלה השרף יּוצא להודו ולאגן הים התיכון דרך נתיב
גחלים לוחשות בכלי שיוצר במיוחד לצורך זה — הבשמים .כיום הנוהג להקטיר קטורת נפוץ פחות
ּבח ֶ'רה .לשריפת
המקטר ,שברוב חלקי תימן כונה ַמ ַ מבעבר ,אך הוא עדיין קיים בטקסי דתות המזרח
הקטורת קראו ּבּוח'ּור ("ענן עשן" בערבית) .באזור הרחוק — הבודהיזם ,ההינדואיזם והשינטו — וכן
עדה בצפון קראו ַח ָּבאן בדרום־מזרח תימן ובאזור ַצ ַ בכנסיות נוצריות המשתייכות לזרם האורתודוקסי,
ארה ,בדומה למילה "מקטר" המופיעה קט ַ
למקטר ִמ ָ הקתולי והאנגליקני .בתימן מהווה הקטרת הקטורת
לעתים קרובות בכתב דרום־ערבי עתיק על גבי חלק מפעילויות שונות במארג חיי היום־יום.
כלים ששימשו לאותה מטרה בעת העתיקה .תהליך מאמר זה מתמקד במנהגי הקטרת הקטורת בקרב
הקטרת הקטורת וחומר הגלם ששימש בו כונו יהודי תימן במחצית הראשונה של המאה העשרים,
שניהם ַדח'ּון ("עשן" בערבית). לפני עלייתם ההמונית לישראל .הוא מבוסס בעיקר
המקטר היה כלי נפוץ שהוחזק בכל בית בתימן. על מידע שהתקבל בעל פה מיהודים שחיו באזורים
לחלק מהמקטרים הייתה ידית נשיאה שאפשרה שונים של תימן. 122

ישנם שני טיפוסים עיקריים של מקטרים :מבנה להעביר אותם בקלות ממקום למקום .המקטרים
אדריכלי דמוי בית ומבנה חסר גג דמוי מזבח יוצרו מטין זול שיובש בשמש או נצרף לחרס ,אך
שבפינותיו ארבע קרניים בולטות .שני מקטרים גם מחומרים יקרים יותר :אבן ,נחושת וברונזה .כפי
מאבן באוסף מוזיאון ישראל מדגימים את הטיפוסים שמראה הממצא הארכיאולוגי ,צורתם כמעט ולא
הללו .שניהם נרכשו בתימן בשנות ה־ 30של המאה השתנתה לאורך אלפי שנים.

הגבוהה .מקורו של מקטר זה הוא ַ יא ִטיט כהה ,המכונה "אבןסט ַ
ושניהם עשויים מאבן ֵ
תימן ,לא רחוק ממחצבות אבן הסבון שבהרי גַ ַ'ּבל סבון"ַ ,ח ַרץ' בערבית התימנית .אבן זו ,העמידה
ַרזִ יח .כלים מסוג זה נחשבו לעתיקים וכמעט ולא לחום ,שימשה כחומר גלם לייצור מקטרים מאז
יוצרו עוד ,בניגוד לכלי מטבח מאבן סבון .מבחינה העת העתיקה .יהודי תימן רכשו הערכה יתרה לכלי
זו יש דמיון בין מקטרי אבן למנורות אבן ,שאף הן אבן והחשיבו מקטרי אבן כעתיקים ויוקרתיים יותר
יצאו מכלל שימוש — מלבד שימוש לצרכים טקסיים ממקטרים שיוצרו מחומרים אחרים .למקטר העשוי
ולעניינים שבקדושה — עם הופעת מנורות הנפט בצורת בית ,ביתן או ציון מקום קדוש (עמ' )71יש
בתחילת המאה ה־.20 שתי קומות ופתחים הדומים לדלתות ולחלונות. 124
הסתובב עם מקטר ברחבי השוק וקיבל כסף עבור לטיפוס השני של מקטר אבן (עמ' )70צורת מזבח
הקטרת קטורת לכבוד הנביא מוחמד. בעל קרניים ,המזכיר מקטרים דומים שהיו נפוצים
מּפ ִליז — סגסוגת נחושת ואבץ ,בציפוי
מקטר נוסף ְ במזרח הקרוב במאות ה־ 5–11לפנה"ס ,וביניהם,
בדיל — עשוי בדגם רשת הדומה לכלוב ,ולו מכסה לדוגמה ,מקטר עשוי אבן גיר מהמאה ה־ 10לפנה"ס
שהורם ,כדי להניח גחלים בוערות וקטורת בקערת שנמצא במגידו .מקטרים מסוג זה נמצאו בחפירות
הבדיל שבתחתיתו .רתיינס ,ברישומים שלא פורסמו, ארכיאולוגיות בבתי מגורים ,ואולי השימוש בהם
תיאר את שני המקטרים בתור "כלים קדומים שאינם היה דומה לשימוש במקטרים בבתים הפרטיים
עוד בשימוש". בתימן .מקטרים דומים שנמצאו בדרום ערב
רסטן
בין החפצים המעטים שהביא אתו לאירופה ַק ֶ מתוארכים בין המאה השלישית לפנה"ס למאה
נִ יּבּור ,הנוסע הגרמני שהצטרף למשלחת הדנית הרביעית לספירה ונושאים כתובות הקדשה ( CIH
לתימן בשנים ,1763–1762יש שני מקטרים זהים .)469, 828, RES 4230
כמעט ,השמורים כיום במוזיאון הלאומי של דנמרק. המקטרים דמויי מזבח בעל קרניים מזכירים בצורתם
אלה הם שני המקטרים הקדומים ביותר מתימן בעת גם את הגגות השטוחים של הבתים מטיפוס מבצר
החדשה המוכרים כיום .בבסיסם מצויה קערת עץ בדרום ערב .לעתים קרובות ,פינותיהם של גגות
לקטורת ,ומעליה מתנשא מבנה דמוי ביתן עשוי הבתים באזור זה קושטו בקרני יעלים ,להן יוחס כוח
מקלעת קנים ,המשמש גם כמכסה .מעשה המקלעת מאגי המסוגל להרחיק רוחות רעות מיושבי הבית.
מאט את פליטת עשן הקטורת ודומה מבחינה זו נראה כי הדמיון הזה הוא בעל משמעות ,וכי קרנות
למקטר המתכת העשוי בדגם רשת .נראה כי מעשה המקטרים נועדו למלא תפקיד דומה ,כאשר המקטר
המקלעת עשוי מקני במבוק ,בדומה למקטרי במבוק נחשב כסמל המייצג את הבית.
הנזכרים בתעודות מימי הביניים מגניזת קהיר. מקטרים שיוצרו מטין מיובש בשמש היו הטיפוס
עיצוב המקטרים בצורת בתים ,מגדלים וציוני הזול והנפוץ ביותר .כלים מסוג זה באוסף מוזיאון
מקומות קדושים מבטא את המשמעות הסמלית של ישראל צבועים בלבן ומעוטרים בפסים ובדגמי
הקטרת קטורת כקורבן ,מעשה המקשר את האדם ִאדרה בצבע אפור.
עם העולמות העליונים דרך עשן הקטורת העולה מח ָּבאן ,שיובשו בשמש ,כונו "בתים קטנים" מקטרים ַ
מעל גגות הבתים ומבני הקודש. בשל צורתם והעיטור הגיאומטרי המזכיר חזיתות
בתים .מקטרים מסוג זה ,המעוטרים בצבע אדום
חומרי הגלם של הקטורת (חּומרה) ובצבעים נוספים ובעלי "קרנות מזבח" ֶ
ומנהגים הקשורים בהם בראשם ,מזכירים את צורת הבתים האופייניים
לדרום־מזרח תימן .מקטרים עשויי טין ,וכלי חרס
חומרי הגלם ששימשו להקטרת קטורת נרכשו נוספים שתהליך ייצורם לא כלל שימוש באובניים,
בשוק הבשמים ונשמרו בבית בסלי מקלעת יוצרו בעיקר על ידי יהודים שישבו במספר כפרים
וורת ַאל־ּבּוח'ּור) או

קטנים עם מכסים מחודדים ַ והופצו ברחבי תימן.

ַ בקופסאות עץ בעלות מכסים מקטרים יוצרו גם ממתכת .מקטר עשוי נחושת
אלה שימרו את חומרי הקטורת טוב יותר מכלי בציפוי בדיל בצורת ביתן שבאוסף מוזיאון ישראל
מתכת .כל סוג של חומר גלם לקטורת נשמר במיכל מזכיר את חלקם העליון של צריחי המסגדים .הרב
משלו על מנת שלא לערבב בין הריחות השונים. יוסף קאפח שעזב את תימן בשנת 1943כינה את
חומר הגלם הפופולרי ביותר ברחבי תימן היה גַ 'אווִ י בער" — מהמילה גַ ַ'ּמר

הלבנֶ ה המיובא ּבּוח'ּור" ,קטורת האי ג'אווה" — שרף ִ שפירושה "פחם" .לדבריו ,סוג כזה של מקטרים היה
מאינדונזיה .חומר זה זכה לשבחים בשל ריחו הנעים בשימוש רק בקרב המוסלמים; אדם אדוק בדתו

במקווה שלפני החתונה ,ובהמשך ,במהלך חיי ("ריח גן העדן") והובער כקטורת ,לדוגמה ,על מנת
הנישואין — אחרי כל טבילה חודשית במקווה ,לפני למלא את הבית בריחו בערב שבת" :כאשר מריחים
שהיא שבה לקיים יחסי אישות עם בעלה .כלומר, ריח טוב ,זה מטיב את האווירה" .לקראת שבת,
נוסף על תפקידה המטהר ,נודע לקטורת גַ 'אווִ י גם בגדיהם של נשים וילדים הונחו מעל סל מקלעת
תפקיד מעורר חשק. הפוך ,וקטורת גַ 'אווִ י הובערה מתחת לסל ,על מנת
מנהג עתיק של יהודי תימן עד לפני כמה דורות היה להספיג את הבגדים בריח המשובח.
לברך את ברכת הבשמים שבטקס ההבדלה במוצאי כלה התבשמה בעשן קטורת גַ 'אווִ י אחרי הטבילה 126
הנשים שבאו לבקר את האם הטרייה הרימו את השבת על ריח הקטורת הבוערת על גחלים לוחשות
שמלותיהן כדי להספיג אותן בריחה המתוק של — "מוגמר קטורת" .ברכה זו ,יחד עם הברכות על
קטורת גַ 'אווִ י ,המובערת על גבי מקטרים שהועברו היין ,על אור הנר ("מאורי האש") ועל ההפרדה בין
בין המבקרות (כותבת שורות אלה השתתפה בטקס הקודש לחול ,סימלה את ההבחנה בין השבת לשאר
דומה בתימן כאורחת בשנת .)1999עשן קטורת ימי השבוע.
המור כונה גם ִחיגָ 'אּב — קמיע המגן מפני כוחות שורשי המנהג לברך על מוגמר קטורת נעוצים
הרוע .כאשר האם הטרייה יצאה לראשונה מביתה בתקופת הבית השני ,ויהודי תימן שימרו אותו
עם התינוק ,הריח של קטורת המור ,יחד עם ריחו בנאמנות יחד עם מנהגים עתיקים נוספים .גם
הּפיגָ ם (ַ ,Ruta graveolensש ָד'אּב
החריף של צמח ֵ לצורך ברכה זו נעשה שימוש בקטורת גַ 'אווִ י ובעצת
יחיּיֶ הֵ ,ש ָדה מזיקה בת בערבית) ,הרחיק מהם את זַ נִ ִ ֲא ָהלות המכונה עּוד .לפי האמונה הרווחת ,נפש
דמותה של לילית. האדם נעצבת עם יציאת השבת ,והריח הטוב נועד
מלבד קטורת גַ 'אווִ י ,עצת אהלות ומור ,גם שרף עץ לשובב אותה .המנהג הזה נפסק במדינת ישראל,
לּוּבאן בערבית) היה חומר גלם הלבונה ( ָ ,Olibanum וכיום יהודי תימן החיים בארץ מברכים את ברכת
נפוץ לקטורת .השרף הופק מהעץ הידוע בשמו הבשמים על צמחי בושם חיים ועל מי ורדים ,או
המדעי Boswellia sacraוצבעו היה שקוף; מכאן אימצו את מנהג יהודי אשכנז לברך על חומרי ריח
שמו הנגזר מהשורש השמי לב"נ .שרף הלבונה היה מיובשים כגון ציפורן שנשמרים במגדל קטן עשוי
הרכיב העיקרי בקטורת שבמקדש (שמות ל ,לד) כסף .הסיבה לכך היא שכיום אין בשימוש תנורי
והוא עדיין מוקטר בכנסיות שונות בימינו .מעניין מטבח כמו אלה שהיו בתימן ,מהם ניתן היה לקחת
שהמונח "קטורת" השתמר בלשונם של יהודי גחלים שבערו מערב שבת ולהקטיר עליהן קטורת
ַח ָּבאן. בלי לחלל את השבת.
בעוד שהמוסלמים בתימן הקטירו קטורת לבונה ) — זמורות העשירות בשרף agalochum ֲעצת ֲא ָהלות (
בנסיבות שונות ,בקרב היהודים היא שימשה רק עּודה — הייתה חומר יקר אשר כונו בערבית עּוד או ֶ
בזיקה למוות .כאשר גופת מת הוכנה לקבורה, יותר מקטורת גַ 'אווִ י ,ולעתים קרובות שני חומרים
הולבשה בתכריכים והובלה לבית הקברות ,נהגו אלה הובערו יחדיו כדי ליצור ריח משובח במחיר זול
להקטיר קטורת לבונה כדי שרוחות רעות לא יתפסו יותר.
את נשמתו הפורחת .כך ,בדומה למור ,לקטורת חומר גלם נוסף לקטורת היה שרף המור — מּוּר או
הלבונה יוחסו כוחות מגוננים .על פי הסבר נוסף, ִמיּר בערבית — שהופק מהשיח הידוע בשמו המדעי
