PPAT Lesson Plan Template (30 minutes)

Lesson title: Observations of the world around us

Grade level(s): 2nd Grade
Utah State Core Standard(s)-
Academic Utah Core Standard:
Science- Strand 2.2: LIVING THINGS AND THEIR HABITATS
Living things (plants and animals, including humans) need water, air, and resources from the
land to survive and live in habitats that provide these necessities. The physical characteristics of
plants and animals reflect the habitat in which they live. Animals also have modified behaviors
that help them survive, grow, and meet their needs. Humans sometimes mimic plant and animal
adaptations to survive in their environment.

Artform-specific Utah Core Standard:

Dance- Students will conceptualize, generate, develop and organize artistic ideas and work. They
will complete and refine dance works (Standards 2.D.CR.1–4).

Learning objectives/Goals:
(Students will be able to; use words such as explain, conduct, plan, carry out, observe,
develop, etc…)
Students will be able to make observations and express their observations through movement
Essential question:
(This is the question the students will be exploring.)
How do I make observations?
What observations can you make about the world around you?
Assessment:
(Explain all forms of formative and summative assessments that occur during the lesson.)
Students will be moving based on the observations they make as a class, and organizing their
movements.
Lesson structure and procedures:
(Describe the sequence of events including transition statements. This will be the largest
part of the lesson plan and must be very detailed. Be sure to include the number of minutes
needed for each step. You may choose your style of lesson here, such as the 5 Es, Gradual
Release, or Backward Design.)

Phase I: Engage, Explore, Explain (20 “Everyone show me their faces”

minutes) Let's get up and moving
Play music

swings- (15/20 seconds)

Slowly falling- (15/20 seconds)
Shivering and sliding-(15/20 seconds)

“Everyone show me their faces”

When we want to describe something we

Touch, smell, taste, see and hear

Now, let's make a movement to help us
remember all five senses: (ask students/then
proceed)
Movement for Touch- spidery finger
Movement for Smell- pointing and scrunch
Movement for Taste- sticking out your tongue
Movement for See- blinking
Movement for Hear- hands behind ears

Let's put them all together: touch, smell, taste,

see and hear (as were doing the movements
say the sense out loud)

Transition to Phase II (2 minutes)

Phase II: Guided Practice (25 minutes) Using our five senses we are going to make
observations about winter a

Now what is something we

smell/taste/feel/see/hear in the winter?

What movement from the warm up would be

good for (Cold? Snow? Wind? Words
students come up with)
Call on a student and spotlight them-have
them perform movement while saying the
observation
(do the same for all 5 senses)
After each sense combine movements and
build on one another

After we have our sequence practice doing

them all together and saying the observation
word to indicate which movement the
students will perform.

Depending on time:
Combine the five sense dance and the winter
dance
i.e “I feel [movement] the cold wind
[movement]”

Wrap Up Review first five sense dance

Who remembers our big “O” word we used

today?
Observation- today we made observations of
what is going on in the world around us. We
observed that it was warm and sunny outside
last week but now it's cold and sunny.

Does anyone remember who a scientist is?

A scientist is someone who makes
observations about the world around us.
Today we were scientists, each and everyone
of us.
