INTRODUCTION

Like a lot of other Internet Marketers, I spent several years thinking and learning about
this business before taking action. When I realized that it was far easier to provide a
little value to millions than a lot of value to a few people, and that I could provide this
value on a recurring basis, my focus was changed forever.

The beauty of Internet Marketing lies in the lifestyle it can provide if you are suited for
the work involved. Imagine talking all day with people that have similar interests. You
share stories about the latest and greatest ideas, products, and experiences. When
someone has a problem that you know about, you tell them how they can fix it. When
someone has an excellent idea, you help them develop it. And when someone has a great
product, you help them promote it. If this sounds like a good fit, then Internet
Marketing may be for you.

But what if you are a small business owner, coach, or own a personal practice. How can
Internet Marketing be beneficial to you? Well, do you have more clients than you can
handle so that you have to constantly refer business to your friends and colleagues? If
yes, you may want to read The 4 Hour Workweek and remove yourself as a bottleneck so
that you can do more business. Then you can use Internet Marketing to reach even more
clients. If not, then Internet Marketing can help you get you achieve the earlier
“problem" of having more clients than you can handle.

directories, and promoting search engine friendly content just to get one person's
attention.

However, over the weeks and months, one person becomes two, two become four, four
eventually turns into a hundred, and a hundred turns into tens of thousands, maybe
even millions. As the number of prospects increases, prospects turn into clients. As
clients increase, free referrals (word of mouth) leads to more prospects, clients, and
referrals. You can reinvest your earnings with great effect, leverage your clients to
attract more prospects, and enjoy free referral business along the way. Eventually, you
get free, organic traffic, and Internet Marketing works for you 24 hours a day, 365 days
a year.

The hardest part is the first year, where you will literally work several hours every day
with little or no reward. You may think that you have what it takes when you start, but
few will make it a month, fewer can do this for two months, fewer still make the 6 month
mark, and almost nobody makes it a full year when the sales finally start to trickle in.

My History With Internet Marketing


(for friends, family & other interested parties)

In 2008 I moved to London with my wife. The idea was, she would do her masters
degree while I supported us financially. I was excited for the job which sounded so good
at first, but quickly became my daily nightmare.

The work was far different than I had anticipated, and I wanted to consider other
options. However, I did not have any money saved up, and could not easily find another
job nor could I afford any time without my current income. We lived from paycheck to
paycheck and made the most of life.

In retrospect, the job itself wasn't really as bad as it felt; I learned a lot and grew as a
person. But at that time, I HATED my employer. More accurately, I hated myself for
being trapped in a job that I did not want to do. I hated not having options, not being
free.

One day, I resolved to do something, anything to take my focus away from the day to day
drudgery, and to give me hope for the future. I resolved to find ways of working and
saving so that I would never be in this same position again, and among my deliberations,
I realized the true potential of the Internet.

I knew what I wanted; the ability to travel anytime without being tied to any one
location; the ability to work from home and not take orders from anyone; to pursue the
things that I find interesting, and to add value to the lives of friends, family and
strangers alike.

I realized that if I could make a living working online, I could have all of these things. I
was a bit short-sighted, but it was a step forward in the right direction. I taught myself
how to be a web designer on weekends and after work. I started experimenting with my
skills and my first several projects for others were free of charge. As I got better, I
started doing low-cost projects for friends and family.

Now, I exclusively work on personal projects and corporate web development as a


part-time job. I am also currently a teacher, and consider this my second part-time job
since it takes 20 hours of my time each week. I am also an Internet Marketer.

Through my web design, I realized a few very important things. First, I am successful
online. I could make a living right now, independent of location, doing web development.
However, I also realized that this too is a very short-sighted goal and makes the bigger
goal harder to attain; residual income.

Residual income is money you make from something that you put time in creating once,
like this eBook. You put time into creating something, and then you focus on selling it.
Authors that are successful make paycheck after paycheck, year after year on their books
without having to do much beyond the initial authoring and promotion. Once a good
book is out there and people are buying it, it basically sells itself. You can do this too
with your website or product. Get traffic to it now, and reap the benefits for years to
come.

Consider this example. Let's say you spend one hour of your time doing a task that will
pay you one penny per day for the rest of your life. An hour for a penny may sound
ridiculous at first, but if you live 30 more years and make a penny a day (that adjusts
with inflation), that's about $109 for your hour of work; more than many of you are
currently making.

Now, a penny a day isn't a lot, it's a lot less than most Internet Marketers make if they
stick with it. At a penny a day it would take 1000 hours of work to make $10 per day
when really, this should be attainable in 200 to 500 hours of work, meaning that you
can start making about $200 to $500 per hour from the start if you look at the return
over 30 years and do things right from the start. This number only increases as you
reinvest, leverage your money, and get free referral business. The more successful you
are, the easier it is to make more money; the hardest part is getting started.

I have now read several books on Internet Marketing, watched hundreds of hours of
videos from top Internet Marketers, and spent a few hundred hours putting what I have
learned into practice. The hardest part of this game is sticking with it because it is a
lesson in delayed gratification. Work now, start getting paid next year for today's work.
There may be exceptions, but this is the general rule, and it flies in the face of what
everyone wants; instant gratification. That is why 99% of Internet Marketers do
not stick with it.

I am one of the stickers because I know from experience that I can stick to what I set
my mind on. I ate a raw foods diet; nothing cooked for a year and a half and water fasted
without food every Wednesday and for 3 to 4 days at the beginning of each month until I
decided to get stronger. I have now been going to the gym consistently for almost six
years between two and eight times per week, depending on my program. I now spend at
least 2 concentrated hours on Internet Marketing daily, and will continue to do so well
past the point of financial independence. I'm not only cut out for this, I love it. It is easy
and natural to be good at something if you are motivated, and I haven't been this
motivated since I first laid eyes on my lovely wife, Eunju.

However, it's not just the roses of success that motivate me. I am still in the first year of
working with little or no reward. I'm furious that I have not yet eliminated my $120k of
debt in student loans, and use that rage to fuel me on. I refer to as the overeducated

idiot when I think about my student debt. When I want to waste time doing things that
don't matter, I get angry at myself for not working on what will bring me to my goals. I
realize that many people spend their lives working jobs that never provide them with the
freedom they desire nor the appreciation they deserve, and I see myself in that position.
You may be frustrated with the lack of clients you have for your great product, so use
this to fuel you on. I dramatize it a bit because it keeps me putting my best foot forward.
Just like in powerlifting where it's a matter of lifting or being crushed, I psych myself
out and get it done.

When used together, keeping the rewards of Internet Marketing in mind while I
properly channel my rage is an incredibly motivating force. If you are also considering
this as a living, or as a way to generate more business, take time to get a clear vision of
where you want to be. Keep those goals in mind every day, and get mad about not yet
being there. Channel your anger, and keep with it. I think Edison must have been a very
angry man as well because he hit the nail on the head over and over: 1% inspiration,

If someone is selling you something that either runs on autopilot or will make you three
thousand dollars a day, be very wary. It may be true that this person is actually making
this kind of money; this is certainly something that is possible in this business, just as it
was possible to make millions of dollars selling pet rocks. However, this is the exception
and not the rule, and it certainly does not happen overnight.

It’s NOT A Scam

There are many scammers to be sure, especially thanks to the anonymity of the Internet,
but I will teach you how to avoid them in my Investing 101 chapter. These people are out
to make a quick buck making you think you can become an overnight millionaire

without any hard work or knowledge. They sell pleasant dreams for a fee, just like
fortune tellers and churches.

It’s NOT MLM (multi-level marketing)

Here’s why:

 There is no monthly financial drain / product buy-in required


 Everything I teach is available and can be done for free
 Your marketing efforts are actually FOCUSED ON SELLING PRODUCT(s) or
services, NOT “a ground-floor business opportunity of a lifetime”

Internet marketing can be very successful for everyone, but only a few people can make
a living off of it. However, with MLM, the people that quit don’t just go away after
learning a few things, their pocketbooks have been nicely drained as well, and usually
thanks to a close friend or family member who places the blame on the victim by saying
“well, I guess you just weren’t cut out for it.” OK, Thanks ASSHOLE for the
encouragement that lined your pockets!

Sounds like I’ve been there before, doesn’t it? Surprisingly, I haven’t. I’ve learned
through the mistakes of others. I’ve been approached several times, I’ve done my
reading (http://pyramidschemealert.org/) and I sympathize with the victims. If you
read the chapter, Investing 101, you will realize that MLM schemes don’t fit the bill. I
will never turn my friends, family, or readers into victims.

One should make money by adding value to the lives of others, not by scamming or
leeching off of them. I’m here to provide value, and hope to simply share a small
percentage of your profits that result from what I teach.

It’s NOT A Bad Thing

Scamming is bad, misleading people is bad, false promises are bad, any late night
commercial with some gadgetry promising to remove your belly fat without any work for
$29.95 through testimonials from professional bodybuilders that never used the
product prior to putting their reputation on the backburner to sell a lie for money is the
EPITOME of bad! (try to say that in one breath!) Lots of advertising is this kind of
misleading information and false promise.

While there are some bad apples out there, this is not for you. Going to a Star Trek
Convention and then selling collectibles to Trekkies (people who love Star Trek) is a
win-win for everyone involved, and the kind of mindset you should start getting into. It's
also a simple matter of supply and demand. As an Internet Marketer, instead of actually
going to the convention, you may leverage eBay to your advantage. That's the Internet
part. Getting the Trekkies to know about what you're selling, that's the marketing bit.
Identify a niche, serve it well, and you will become valuable to others.

Have you ever done one of those draw-by-numbers pictures yourself or with children?
There are a bunch of numbered dots on a piece of paper, and if you draw a straight line
from one dot to the other in the correct order, when you get to the end, you will see a
picture of something that you may not have seen in the beginning.

This analogy just popped into my head one day and I like it for several reasons. First of
all, think about people and products as dots on a piece of paper. Your job as an Internet
Marketer is to simply identify which dots can be connected, and then go about
connecting them. The more dots you connect, the more money you make. You are telling
people interested in buying blue widgets about the blue widgets you have on sale. That's
one line connected. The next day, you may find more people interested in blue widgets
and link them to your blue widgets; another line. Sometime later, you identify a group of
people interested in buying red widgets, so you affiliate yourself with a red widget dealer,
and let the potential customers know where to buy them. All of these connections are
connecting buyers and suppliers that simply don't know about each other. For your
services, you make a small fee, and build a reputation as someone that is very helpful.
This is Internet Marketing done right.

I also like the analogy because the more dots you connect, the clearer the picture
becomes. When you start out, you may guess you're drawing a flower, but instead it
turns out to be a bumblebee. As you make more and more connections, you get to see
the bigger picture and have to focus less and less on the details. This is like any endeavor
that you study and work hard at; the more you learn about and work with something,
the more clear the process becomes.

This may all seem a bit abstract to many people, so here's another analogy. Most of you
probably have some idea about how your local supermarket works. Let's look at your
favorite box of cereal. There is a company that developed the cereal, mass produced it,
packaged it, branded it, found suppliers (like your grocery store), and then did a bunch
of marketing to let you know about it. It became of interest to you at some point (you
didn't always know about this cereal), and you went to the store, bought it, liked it, and
are now a repeat customer. In the case of the things you like, there is no trickery
involved; you simply tried something that looked good, and now it's an integral part of
your life.

The process is exactly the same for Internet Marketing, except rather than a large
corporation, it's probably just you to begin with. Just like the company, you go out and
develop a product (information) based on some market research you have conducted
(keyword analysis), package it (organize information into an eBook), brand it (make a
pretty cover graphic to represent the book online), find suppliers (newsletters, websites,
online stores, other Internet Marketers interested in selling it), and then do a bunch of
marketing (SEO, article directories, Facebook, Twitter, Word of Mouth, Websites, Free
Promotions, Joint Ventures, etc.). Essentially, you either develop a product or are a
product affiliate, try to get your product on (online) stores shelves, and then do some
smart marketing (find the people that want your product & connect them to it).

One last analogy for family members since many of mine are involved in sales. If you are
familiar with sales, you are basically finding people interested in buying the services
your company has to offer. You may not make the product directly, but you represent
the makers, and get a commission for selling their product or service. This is the same
process for Internet Marketers. Get yourself in front of people that may be interested in
your product, show that you're not there to scam them (establish trust), and try to make
the sale. If it goes through, great - everyone should be happy. If not, move on to the next
interested client - it's a numbers game.

The main difference is that the numbers game is very different. Instead of selling a
million dollar project a few times per year and getting a small percentage, you want to
sell a $30 product a few thousand times per year at around 50% commission. This is
possible because rather than using all of your time engaging with a few clients (there are
only so many hours in a day), you try to drive tens of thousands to millions of people to
your product. They can both make you great money if you succeed, and I would argue
that Internet Marketing is more stable because the sales are much easier and you know
how much you are going to sell with a given number of impressions thanks to google
analytics. However, just like in sales, if you are not good at it, it may not be enough to
survive (especially at first), and you may find yourself quickly moving onto other things.
Not everyone is cut out for sales, or the delayed gratification that is required (work six
months on a project and don't make a cent, then move on to the next one hoping it will
work). This can and does happen, but it happens a lot more to the uninformed,
misinformed, and under-informed.

Correct knowledge applied is power, and my goal is to provide you with the full
knowledge to succeed in this business should you decide to take it on as a hobby,
part-time job, or full-time job.

INVESTING 101

The Cost of Doing Business

In traditional business, the startup costs can be staggering. It may take your life savings
to open the restaurant or buy the equipment necessary to perform the service in which
you are an expert. Comparatively, the startup costs for Internet Marketing are very
small.

In fact, everything I teach CAN be done for FREE. However, free is not always better.
Imagine sweeping a floor with a free pair of chopsticks instead of a $3 broom. If you
spend a lot of time sweeping floors, it probably makes sense to invest in a broom instead
of insisting on using the chopsticks.

At the beginning, you will gain confidence in sweeping floors with your pair of
chopsticks, but when you finally invest in a broom, your job will become a whole lot
easier. Likewise, when you upgrade to a vacuum cleaner after a good amount of time
sweeping, another great leap will be made. Sometimes you will still use the broom, but
the vacuum cleaner will speed things up tremendously.

Finally, you may hire someone else to do the sweeping and vacuuming altogether using
your tools. You may not make as much money at the start, but you will literally be

getting free money. Someone else will be using or renting your tools (capital), doing all
of the work for you, and you will still make money.

The above illustrates an example of smart investing. You do what you can for free to gain
confidence at first, and continually make RELATIVELY small investments that save you
big amounts of time and allow you to earn more.

Like any business, Internet Marketing will have its costs. You can do it for free, but it
does not make sense to do it for free forever. As you make more money at it, it will make
sense to reinvest a percentage of your earnings into tools which will help you make more
money faster.

Although a fool with money may throw one heck of a party, he and his money are soon
parted. Below I will teach you how to become a smart investor.

Making Good Purchases

One of the scariest things for me at the start of this business was getting used to seeing
other peoples products. It seemed like everyone was after my money, and even worse, I
wanted to buy almost everything that was being sold!

I managed to keep my credit card in my wallet long enough to make smart choices, but it
was not easy at first, and I do NOT consider myself a compulsive shopper. So, how do
you stay safe as an Internet Marketer and invest your money well when there are so
many ways to make money online?

I will now give you a simple rule to follow and a few questions to ask yourself before
making any purchase. The first rule I learned straight from the mouth of Barry Schwartz
during a guest lecture at the University of Pennsylvania (my alma mater). Barry is an
economist that studies decision making theory and has a wonderful book called The
Paradox of Choice.

RULE:

If you want to make a purchase, delay the final purchase decision for two weeks.

Most things you will not still want to purchase after two weeks have passed, or, you will
find a free or better way to do things. This gets rid of your initial feeling (compulsion) to
buy and gives you more time to critically THINK about whether or not it is a good
purchase. Try doing this at the department store, grocery store, etc. You will be
surprised at how much junk you buy on impulse.

If you still want to purchase the product after two weeks, then ask yourself the following
three questions:

1. Will this save me more time than it costs to pay for it?
2. Will I actually use the product enough to justify the cost?
3. Do I have time to use the product enough to justify the cost?

1) Will this save me more time than it costs to pay for it?

The first question is all about leveraging your time. For example, let's pretend that I get
paid $50 an hour and it takes me three hours to rake the yard. The neighbor kid would
be happy to rake the yard for $50.

Now, the question most people would ask is, "Is it worth $50 for me to have someone
else rake the yard?" This is a simple question of supply and demand, but it is not the
question you should be asking yourself if you are an Internet marketer.

Instead, you should ask yourself, "Will this save me more time than it costs to pay for
it?" In this case, you would make $150 by working 3 hours and pay $50 to someone else.
If you have the neighbor kid rake your yard, you have just earned an extra $100. This is
because you have just used your time more wisely. While you could have raked the yard
for free, those are 3 hours you cannot work. You would have made no money and had to
rake a bunch of leaves. If you pay the neighbor kid $50, you net $100 increased earning
and do work that pays you instead of raking.

Work and no pay vs. paid work - it's an easy decision for Internet Marketers to make
because you can work anytime, but this requires a bit of a change in thinking. Therefore,
if a product or service online will save you a lot more time than it costs to pay for it, it is
an easy purchase IF you will actually use it enough for it to pay for itself.

2) Will I actually use the product enough to justify the cost?

The second question simply asks if you will actually use the product enough to justify
the cost. For example, if the neighbor kid demands $100 and it only takes you 1.5 hours
to rake the leaves, then you have just wasted $25. Likewise, if you buy some software,
outsource, or buy any other kind of service or information, as long as you use it enough
to more than pay for itself, it is a good investment.

Many products are amazing; I will share some that have saved me countless hours for a
very low price in my newsletter. I had done the process manually before using the tools,
and it was absolute drudgery; boring, repetitive, and time consuming. Once I found the
right tools, the processes became easier in all cases, and this left me with more energy
because I had to spend less time on tasks that I really didn't enjoy.

3) Do I have time to use the product enough to justify the cost?

This question is meant to really emphasize question 2. Let me elaborate a bit more. You
may think that a product or service will save you time, but it can actually cost more time
than it is worth. People that first do outsourcing with ambiguous tasks almost always
lose money on their investment rather than properly leveraging cheap labor (which is a
good investment). This happens because they think that it will save much more time
than it actually does, or because they simply do not have enough time themselves to do
what is necessary to enable their outsourced help to work efficiently.

To summarize, there are many excellent investments to be made as an Internet


Marketer. However, you must first avoid impulse buying as per the 2 week rule. Next,
make sure that whatever you invest in is a time saver. If it is a book you are considering,
first do a search online for free information before buying the book to make sure that
the content is worth buying. Next, ask yourself if you will actually use information from

the book to make you enough money to justify the cost. Finally, ask yourself if you have
time to actually read the book you have bought. You may see value in it and want to use
it, but if you simply do not have time for it, then it should not be purchased. If you
follow the two week rule and answer "yes" to all three questions, then you can feel
confident in your purchases knowing that they will save you time, thereby making you
more money as long as you use them enough to justify the cost and use the time saved to
work on your business.

THE COSTS OF INTERNET


MARKETING

I spoke about investing for a reason, because as an Internet Marketer, you will likely
have some costs. Now, everything can be done for free, but to do everything well and
without ridiculous amounts of work, it is often good to pay for a few things. I will
highlight the most common expenses, or rather, the essentials, below:

1) Your Domain (~$1 per month)

Domains now run about $11 per year. That's about a dollar a month to have an
easy-to-remember address for your website. This can serve many purposes which I will
elaborate upon later, and is pretty much an essential cost. I buy my domains through
GoDaddy because they do both domains and hosting, and make it relatively easy to
manage all of your sites. I have been using them for six years and have always had good
experiences.

2) Hosting (Free to $8 per month)

Depending on your hosting needs, hosting may be free or cost as much as $8 per month.
Your domain is only a location. Like the yellow pages, it points people in the right
direction. In this case, your domain points to your host, and your hosting provider
serves the web pages and other content. I do all of my hosting with GoDaddy, and since I
have several domains and need many databases, I use their $8 per month plan, but you
can do like I did and start with the $4/month plan and upgrade when necessary.

3) An Autoresponder (Free to $20/month until your list becomes very large)

Autoresponders are programs which manage your mailing list and send out automatic
messages. The beauty of these is that you write an e-mail once, set a date when to send it
(e.g. 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks after sign-up), and it takes care of sending people the
information at the intervals you specify. Write information once, and put everyone
through the same information / sales funnel.

The big daddy of mailing lists is Aweber, but the company that I use is
YourMailingListProvider (YMLP) because they have much cheaper start-up costs, which
is ideal for the new Internet marketer. How I see it is, until I'm making money, why
spend more than necessary? And when it eventually pays for itself, I'm happy to pay a
few extra dollars per month in return for the amount it saved at the beginning.

YMLP is free to start with, and as you send out more and more mails per month, you pay
more for the service. While Aweber bills per number of people on your list, YMLP bills

by number of emails sent. If you want to send tons of emails per month to each
subscriber (I don't recommend this), Aweber may be a better option to start with.

4) A Method (~$30 per month)

Now, you do not need to follow any one particular method of Internet Marketing, but I
strongly recommend choosing one to start with, and sticking with it. I will describe
several methods later, and you can choose the one that is best suited for you. Usually,
these will cost about $30 per month, and for your money you will get step-by-step
instructions on how to succeed with the method.

What I like best about these is that you can cancel anytime. Learn what you need to
learn at the beginning, cancel, and put it into practice. The only downside to this is that
you will lose access to the member forums. Although I’ve read everything at The
Keyword Academy, I still pay the $33/month membership because the forums and tools
they provide are of consistent value and easily save me more than an hour of searching
for answers (and deciding if the sources can be trusted) elsewhere. I also continually
learn of new tools and methods for greater success.

A method is not a required cost, but definitely one that’s worthwhile if you have more
money than time. For me, 15-30 minutes of web development / teaching pays for my
month’s membership, so it’s a no-brainer.

5) Optional Costs

There will be all kinds of optional costs that make your life easier. There may be
packaged information that would be helpful that you want to buy, tools that automate
processes, and some of you may even consider outsourcing much of the work that needs
to be done.

In my opinion, eventually, all information online will be freely available in the future.
This is a widely held debate, but I think it’s safe to say that that’s the general trend.

However, this does not mean that you cannot still sell information. Quite the opposite.
As more and more information is freely available, a greater and greater need arises for
relevant information to be nicely packaged for easy consumption. For example, how
long would it have taken you to find out everything in this book on your own? How
about the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People? Covey’s made millions off of seven little
bits of advice that are nicely packaged.

My guess is that information packaging, not providing, is the future of online sales. This
is why so many people make no money with their blogs, but later find that they can sell a
book almost identical to their blog if they package the information correctly.

Finally, be sure to learn, understand, and apply whatever your investment may be
before looking for or making another investment. It’s easy to become an information
addict or gadgetry nerd. However, neither will help you until you use them. Avoid the
trap of becoming a learned idiot, or a collector of toys you never play with by following
the investing strategies outlined above.

CAUTION About Free Services:

Now, you can do everything for free that I mention. You could get a free subdomain
through .co.cc, free hosting through various places, setup your own free autoresponder
and participate on free forums. However, with free accounts, the service can be taken
away at any time, and without any need for the services to justify their actions. For
example, many will simply discontinue your services because you get too much traffic.

Also, you do not want to spend a lot of time with search engine optimization on a
domain that may disappear one day. Likewise, you do not want to build a huge mailing
list only to have it disappear.

You do not want to lose your successful sites after


they start making you money!

With paid services, you do not need to worry about this happening.

Since the monthly costs are so low, I strongly recommend at least having your own
domain, hosting, and autoresponder. Altogether, this will cost between $5 and $29 per
month, depending on which options you choose. If you join a community (strongly
recommended), this will roughly double the cost, but save you tons of time in the
short-run. Review the Investing 101 section to see if a method subscription is right for
you.

Compared with offline businesses, the start-up costs for the Internet Marketer are
almost nil, and once you get some traffic, they quickly pay for themselves.

However, if you really don’t have the funds to pay for the essentials, then don’t.

This especially applies for readers in developing nations, where the monthly costs could
be crippling. In this case, use free services for everything, and once you’re making some
money, migrate everything over to paid servers. Your capabilities will be limited in most
cases, and it will require much more research, setup and migration time, but you will be
able to do everything that I discuss.

Now that you know the essential costs as an Internet Marketer, let us move on to keys

HOW TO SUCCEED IN
INTERNET MARKETING

Remember my dots analogy from earlier? Your job as an Internet Marketer is to connect
people with products that they are interested in buying. Now, a lot of people go about
this completely backwards. They have a great idea, create a product, and then find that
they cannot find buyers as easily as they had hoped. A far better approach is to identify a
market of customers that you can reach, and then bring a product to them.

Therefore, your first task as an Internet Marketer is to find interested buyers.

Find What People Are Interested In Buying

There are many different ways to find out what people are interested in buying, and it is
impossible for me to cover them all here. Instead, I will walk you through two very
different methods of finding interested buyers in your niche. But what do I mean by
"your niche?"

Your niche is something that you have a passion for. Now, many successful Internet
Marketers go after niches that they are not interested in to begin with, but have
identified as potential money makers. I do not recommend this for the beginner because
it will be much harder to stay motivated and connect with people in that niche. So your
niche can really be anything that you enjoy doing. My niches are my hobbies and
interests which include Internet Marketing, web design, positive psychology, fitness
(power lifting), and self improvement. Let us take the self-help genre as an easy example
for illustration.

Keyword Research

One of the main methods I will discuss more later has to do with search engine
optimization (SEO). You want to get ranked first in google and get a bunch of free traffic
to your website. Now, ranking for anything will not do, so you need to head over to the
google keyword tool and do a bunch of keyword research. This is a process I do not have
time to get into detail with now, but here is the basic premise.

You search for terms in the Google’s keyword tool related to self help. You may search
for "self help" to begin with and then get some more specific suggestions. You will want
to look for terms that involve several words and do an "exact phrase match" to find
things people are actually searching for. Once you identify terms that get a good amount
of traffic and aren't too hard to rank for (another discussion), then you can start creating
content and backlinks to try and rank for that term in Google.

In this first method, you find potential buyers by looking at what people are actually
searching for. Being the first person to provide people with the products and services
they are looking for (#1 in Google) will make you money.

“Outside The Box” Research

Search engines are far from the only places to identify markets. You can go to Amazon
and see what is in the recent best sellers list. You can go to Clickbank and find what
products have high gravity and relatively few sales. You can go to Dummies.com and see
if they have anything to offer in your niche. If they have a paperback product, you can
provide the information in a digital format, and piggyback on their market research (this
series is an excellent example of niche identification).

Identifying markets is the easy part. There are ever more new niche markets emerging
in the health, wealth and lifestyle markets every day. You just need to find which are
most worth pursuing and start to connect with them, which brings me to the next skill.

Get Traffic

This can be done through either search engine optimization (getting to the top of Google
primarily) and social marketing. I will discuss these in detail later, but I recommend you
choose one approach and stick with it.

Getting to the top of Google (SEO) is often a very long process. It is often possible with
longer keyword phrases as you learn how Google works, but with longer keyword
phrases there is also often much less traffic. If I wanted to get ranked #1 in Google for
"self help" it may never happen, even if I work every day for the rest of my life on it, but

small victories can be won here, and they add up. Best of all, it's free traffic, and if you
make it to the top with one keyword, it is easier to get on top with related keywords.

The next method is social marketing. This includes things such as posting on forums,
being active on Facebook & creating like pages for your niches, creating hubs and posts
in article directories, giving away free eBooks in joint venture giveaways, connecting
with online reporters and giving out press releases, and most importantly, building and
communicating with your mailing list.

The advantage of social marketing is that it can go viral which means a sudden boost in
new members on your mailing list. You also are not reliant on search engines for your
earnings. Google often changes its algorithms, so you never know when your #1 page
may drop off the face of the earth for an unknown period of time.

As you may be able to tell already, like most people, I am rather risk averse and do not
like to depend on services which I cannot control. Just as in your other investments,
diversification is an important aspect of Internet Marketing. However, as a beginner, it
is most important to first make money before worrying about diversification!

Finally, once you get ranked in google or have some members on your list, you will need
to start promoting products that people are interested in to start making money. This is
the easy part.

Share Products With Your Prospects

After you have identified a market and start getting some prospects (determined by page
views for SEO and list size for social marketing), it is time to start making some money.
This is the easy part because most likely, if you are interested in your niche, there are
several things you have purchased that have helped you out a lot.

For self-help and Internet Marketing, I cannot recommend the 4 Hour Workweek highly
enough. When I read the book, I was ready for it, and it just makes things click in terms
of how to remove yourself from the 9-5 grind, still get paid, and be more effective with
your time. I love this book, and would recommend it to everyone whether or not I were
an affiliate. Luckily, if you click the link above and buy from Amazon, I get a small
commission.

Think about what you really like in your niche, find affiliate programs, and promote
them just like you would tell your friend about the product. I have also been raving
about my five finger shoes for a couple years now, and there was no affiliate program,
but just yesterday I found that they sell them through Amazon. BOOM, affiliate link.

Perhaps you cannot find any affiliate products or programs in your niche. Don't worry if
this is the case because there are tons of resources available for finding products to
promote, and I will cover these in my newsletter.

A Few Words On Product Promotion

First off, never try to sell anything. This might sound counter-intuitive, but if you focus
on sales, you will become one of those bastards that writes late night infomercials selling
false promises and results that only exist in children's fiction.

Instead, always focus on providing value. I could recommend many things, but I only
recommend things that I personally love, and think those in my niche will also love. I'm
not out to convince anyone about anything, rather, I'm out to share the benefits that I
have received from a product, and let others make up their own minds for themselves if
they think they would also get the same benefits.

Somewhere along the line, probably with the horrible advertising abuse that is visible
everywhere now, the words affiliate, marketing, sales and mailing list - some of the most
common terms in this business - got negative connotations. Affiliates are simply people
that like a product and are happy to tell others that are interested about why they like it.
Marketing is just connecting buyers and sellers which is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT
for EVERY business. Sales is getting product into the right people’s hands and a
mailing list is a way to keep in touch with people that have similar interests as you.

In all of these examples, the Internet Marketer brings value to everyone involved. The
reason these terms get a bad name is because lots of people are liars and cheats. Just
focus on giving value to your prospects and clients, and neither reputation nor sales will
ever be a problem.

BEST METHODS

I have already touched on two of the main methods for Internet Marketing, namely
getting free traffic through search engine optimization (SEO), and social media
marketing to build and sell to your mailing list. I will now go into a little more depth on
each and provide links to my two favorite method sites. These sites go into exactly how
to do everything I talk about with step-by-step methods for success. I see no reason to
reinvent the wheel, which is why I refer you to them. Note that I have paid for both and
am happy to continue paying for each of them, but as a beginner, you should choose
whichever seems the best fit for you, and stick with it.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

SEO is a numbers game. If you like things that run on auto-pilot once they are setup,
then this may be the method for you. If you get to the top of Google in your niche for a
keyword that gets a good amount of traffic, money is guaranteed. In the worst case, you
can always sell Google AdSense space which gives you commissions each time a user
clicks a Google advert. Better forms of monetization include Amazon Affiliate products,
eBay, and promoting member sites in your niche (if they exist).

Once you get to the top, you can basically leave it alone. Searches will remain roughly
the same each month (with exception based on product type, November and December
will likely bring in more business), a certain percentage of visitors will make you money,
and you likely won't have to touch it again for years to come while earning a regular
monthly paycheck. I talk to people making $10,000 and even $20,000 per month with
this method, but these guys have been doing this for several years.

What this involves is making a website with keyword rich content. Basically, you need to
learn how to write articles that Google likes. This takes about 10% of your time. Then the
other 90% of your time is spent building quality backlinks to your articles. This usually
takes the form of submitting article rewrites to article directories which get indexed
frequently by Google and up the relevance of your page, although several other factors
come into effect such as your domain age, site relevance, and most importantly, similar
searches.

I am a member of The Keyword Academy which focuses solely on this method. It costs
about $30 per month and they have several tools which make the process easier. One
tool they made is called Niche Refinery, which takes thousands of keyword results from
Google's Keyword Tool and identifies which keyword phrases are worth pursuing by
looking at traffic, cost per click, and checking the page rank of the top four pages for that
keyword (one of several difficulty indicators).

They also have a system called PostRunner, which is basically a network of article
directories that members control. This is different from other article directories in that
they have strict quality requirements. Since the article directories are run by members
(you can add your own to the network), they are often ranked better in Google because
the members know the tricks of the trade. Basically, this means that your backlinks from
PostRunner are better than many other kinds of backlinks you could be going after. You

can also choose which directories you want to submit to as well as when the articles will
be submitted.

Finally, their forums are fantastic. You can get help from other members, and weight the
quality of advice from each person because all members have the option of submitting
their online earnings for review to get a badge. This means if someone is earning $1000
per month from Google AdSense, a $1000 badge appears next to their name. Following
high earners posts can be really helpful for the beginner and there is a very tight sense of
community. You will get straight and helpful answers rather than vague posts that
require you to buy their product for more information. Although I was skeptical about
the extra $4 per month for forum access (pro membership), I cannot emphasize the
value of this enough.

If SEO sounds like the method for you, I cannot make a better recommendation than
The Keyword Academy.

Social Media Marketing

If you enjoy talking with others about your niche topics, don't mind doing this on a daily
basis, and can add value to many discussions in your niche, then social media marketing
may be the right method for you.

This method requires a ton of work in the beginning, but is worth every hour you put
into it. Your goal is to build your own mailing list so that you are not dependent on
Google for your paycheck. As you build a list of like-minded people interested in a

certain area, you can recommend products to them for a long time, and people that like
your list will refer other like-minded individuals to it. Having your own loyal customer
base is one of the best things in Internet Marketing, but also requires a lot of time and
attention.

There are too many methods of social media marketing to list in this short article, but I
will go into detail with many of them in my newsletter.

There are lots of A-List bloggers that talk a good talk, and push a lot of products, but
offer very little immediate value. I am a member of the Internet Marketing Report Card,
a community of Internet Marketers who share their experiences about products and
services for Internet Marketers. The top rated method in this community, with over 900
reviews with an average grade of A (on an A-F scale), is Chris Farrell Member Site.

This is another service I subscribe to for social media marketing. He touches a bit on
keyword research and SEO, but really shines when he talks about how to build a list. The
videos are aimed at the absolute beginner so that nobody gets left behind, and he takes
you by the hand every step of the way from how to setup your website and mailing list,
to how to get people to join, and how to promote products. He has templates and
tutorials for everything he teaches. It would be silly for me to try and develop the same
materials on my own, which is why I gladly promote his site.

Method Conclusion

I have shared the two main approaches to Internet Marketing above and recommended
excellent resources for each. One requires a lot of time and patience at the start, but is
completely hands-off money once you get to the top of Google. To be honest, this is the
method usually preferred by more introverted people because it does not require any
interaction with others, and there is no need to maintain a relationship since it is just a
numbers game.

The other method requires a lot of communication with people in your niche and adding
value to every discussion that you can. You need to reach out to others, and find a lot of
win-win trades. If you like talking to like-minded people and building relationships, if
you are extroverted in general, this method may be more suitable for you. It is also
possible to operate independent of Google through this method.

Finally, the methods can be combined to great effect. Getting to the top of Google and
driving people to your mailing list is the best of both worlds. Even better, being at the
top of Google and promoting your own product (or member site) through your #1
ranked website, gigantic mailing list, and numerous affiliates is the zenith of Internet
Marketing success. However, each method requires a ton of work up front, so get good
at one method first before trying to learn another.
