New Words
Bag, bike, blackboard, book, bus, car, chair, merry-go-round,
monkey bars, pencil, seesaw, shelf, slide, swing, taxi, truck, van.

Getting Started
Fill a bag with any of the items on the list that you can
find, such as a book, pencil, or a toy vehicle. Have your
child reach in the bag and pull out an item, naming it in
English.
Take a vocabulary walk or ride. Give your child pictures
or a list of places you can find or things you can see on
the trip. Includes words or pictures such as a car, taxi,
truck, or van. On another trip include playground equip-
ment. Have your child check off each item as you see it.
Practice
Using a large sheet of paper, draw things you see on a playground,
such as a merry-go-round. Label each one. If you can visit a play-
ground, make flash cards with the names of each thing, such as the
seesaw, slide, swings, and so forth. Pull out a card. Have your child
read the name and run to that item and back.
Pack a school bag, saying each item: book, bag, pencil, and any
other items included.
Using a large sheet of paper, have your child draw your street. Add
pictures of vehicles and other things found on the street. Label the
vehicles.

More Fun
Make a maze with blocks, tape, or sidewalk chalk. Drive toy vehi-
cles through the maze.
Play pretend school with your child acting as the teacher. Make
flash cards using the list of words above. Sort the words into
groups: vehicles, school, and playground words.

Extra Fun
Start a memory game with, “I packed my school bag with a pencil.”
Have your child repeat the sentence and add another word. Conti-
nue adding things to take to school that are not on the list, such as
an apple, a crayon, and so forth.
Before going on a trip in the area, decide on a number of points to
various vehicles. A car might earn one point, or a taxi would earn
two points. Keep track of the points.

Activity
Play “Red Light, Green Light.” The leader is a “traffic light,” stan-
ding with his or her back to the other players, who are standing in
a line, at the starting place. When the leader says, “green light,”
players advance. When the leader says, “red light,” the players
must freeze. The leader turns, and if anyone is caught moving, that
player returns to the starting point. The person to tag the leader
first wins and becomes the next leader.

On the App
