D. Concept
Acceleration refers to the rate of change in speed or velocity of an object. The concept of acceleration is
introduced as due to the change in the speed or direction of a moving object. So, even if there is no change in
speed but there is a change in direction, acceleration is achieved.

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
Good morning class! Good morning ma’am

Let’s pray first. (After praying) Good morning class! Before you take your (Learners do what the teacher says)
seats, please arrange your chairs, pick up some pieces of papers from the
floor

You may seat class!

Who’s absent? There are no assignments right? (If there’s any, collect the
assignments)

What does we do yesterday class? We have an activity ma’am

Yes it is, what have we share last meeting? About rides in mugna, and the highlights of
the past Diyandi Festival

Right, rides in Mugna, rides. Galleon, roller coaster and the likes. So, okay Yes ma’am
class, who plays basketball here? Because me, back on college days thou
I’m still a college student right now, I used to play basketball a lot back
when. So yeah, have you played basketball? Or watched a basketball
game?

That’s good to hear then, can you tell me what happen in playing The players are running ma’am, shooting
basketball? the ball and etc.

Thank you, How about hiphop? Are you familiar with Hiphop? Or any Yes ma’am. Interpretative dance, rumba,
other dance? cheerdance and many likes.e

Yes it is. How about driving a car? Or watching someone driving a car? In movies ma’am or when we ride a
jeepney, we can see the driver the jeepney

Yes in movies right? Or in an arcade? Yes ma’am

What have you noticed on the things that I have told you? (Learners will answer)

Yes very good, there is a change in movement. In speed or in direction. Yes ma’am
Just like how you played in basketball. In playing basketball, there are
times you run so fast, sometimes you are steady in your place because
your contemplating if you’ll run or not or your waiting for the ball to be
passed by your teammates. Sometimes, you’ll turn right or left depending
where the ball is. Right?

Or in hiphop, you move depending on the beat, whether you move fast or Yes ma ‘am
you move slow. Sometime you take turns, go to the left turn right and so
on. In dancing there’s a lot of movements you can do right?

In riving a car, or just simply riding a jeepney. When the driver feels like Yes ma’am
the road is empty, he’ll drive fast, but if there is a traffic or someone
wants to move out on the car, the driver will slow down. And when the
road is a curved one, the car goes curved as well right?

So, these three (3) things involved change in speed and change in Yes ma’am
direction or in short there is a change in velocity, am I right?

So, these change in speed, change in direction or for short change in Yes ma’am
velocity is called as ACCELERATION. It refers to the rate of change in
speed or velocity of an object.Understand?

Yes? So bright students. Okay, if you really understand acceleration, In (learners will answer)
which case is the car accelerating?
 A car changing lanes at constant speed
 A car speeding an effort to beat the red light
 A car slowing down while making a left turn
In which of the three (3) stated that the car is accelerating? Hmm? (Learners will answer)

Yes all of the three is showing that the car is accelerating. In the first
statement, there is a change in direction because it change lanes which
means it change direction thou there is a constant speed.

While in the statement two, it said there that speeding an effort to beat Yes ma’am
the red light, so it means that the car speed ups from slow to faster just
to reach the other end so that he can’t wait when the traffic light comes
red. That’s why it’s accelerating because the speed is change.
Understood?

How about the third statement?b Why does the car accelerating? The car is showing acceleration because, it
changes speed wherein it stated there that
the car is slowing down also it changes
direction.

Yes very good! Always remember that a moving objects accelerates When it changes speed, changes in
when? direction or changes in velocity

Very good! Acceleration is said to be positive (+) if the speed increases; Yes ma’am
Negative (-) if the speed decreases; or zero if there is no change in speed.
In common terms, a car is accelerating if the speed increases or the gas
pedal is pressed; A car is said to decelerating if the car’s brakes are used.
The acceleration of a car moving at a constant speed is zero because
there is no change in speed. Understand?

Since Acceleration is the change in velocity per unit time, then the change
in velocity (V) is the final velocity (V f) minus the initial velocity (Vi)

Acceleration= change in velocity

Time
A= Vf-Vi
T
Which is Vf is the final velocity while Vi is the initial velocity and t is for Yes ma’am
the time. What does this final velocity and initial velocity means? Example
to the activity that you have done yesterday (Teacher will draw a diagram
in the board to show the final and initial velocity to the students)
Understand?

So to solved it (referring to the activity), in point A to B the final velocity is

20 m/s while the initial velocity is 0 m/s so therefore we will minus 20
m/s to 0 m/s which equals to 20 m/s. In terms of time, it shown an initial
and final time, so therefore let’s get the initial and final time. The final
time is 2.0s while the initial time is 0s, so we will minus 2.0s (final time) to
0s (initial time) which results to 2.0s.
And then we will divide the velocity over the time, so 20 m/s divided by
2.0s equals to 10 m/s2

Also, always remember this will be the SI unit for acceleration, m/s2. Yes ma’am
Understand?

Very good. So, let’s try to solved acceleration class.

Martin rides a bicycle at 1.5 m/s south. 10 seconds later, he is
pedaling at 3.0 m/s south. What is Martin’s acceleration?
Solution:
A= Vf-Vi
T
= 3.0 m/s-1.5m/s
10s

= 1.5 m/s
10s

= 0.15 m/s2 South

Understand?
Yes ma’am
Very good. How about this? Calculate the acceleration of a car from rest
that travels at 24m/s due east within 30s. What is the acceleration of the 0.8 m’s2 East
car?

Very good class! (Teacher will call someone to solved the next problem) -3.75 m/s2
The cyclist in the tour de france accelerates down a hill from 37 m/s to a
speed of 22 m/s that takes him 2 seconds. Calculate the acceleration.

Very good! Do you understand it class? Yes ma’am

Also, when the result is positive, the object is accelerating or the speed is Yes ma’am
increasing or the direction change okay just like the first and second
question. While if the result is negative, the object is said to be
decelerating or the speed is decreasing. Okay class?

In your activity, from point A to B, what can you describe from it’s Increasing ma’am or accelerating
motion?

Very good. Because the answer or result is accelerating. But if the result is The motion is constant or there is no
Zero what does the motion is? change in speed also as with direction.

Very good, it has a constant speed or a constant velocity, which means it Yes ma’am
the speed or the direction has never change throughout the travel. Do
you understand class?

Very good. Have you seen a car right? Who among you here, that has a Yes ma’am, we’ve seen a car already.
car?

For those, who don’t have a car, I expect that you have ride a jeepney
right. So you know what does a car look like, the wheels, the brakes and
etc. So, I have here a picture of a car. (Teacher will show a car) So, we will
name the parts of this car according to our topic Acceleration.

Imagine you are driving a car, and then you’ve had to stopover to buy Press the break ma’am
food in a convenient store, so you have to slow down, what part of the
car will you use for you to slow down your car?

Yes very good, you need to step in your brake for you to slow down, so
therefore we can call the brakes an accelerator because it changes the
speed of a car.

What if, your in a road, and you see that the road is empty, you barely see
a car, so you’ve decided to drive fast, so you step in your gas pedal. So, Because it changes the speed.
this gas pedal, we call this also as an accelerator because?
Very good, because it changes the speed of the car. What about the It can be also called as accelerator because
wheels? it changes direction. You can turn right or
left with the help of a wheel

Very good. So, do you understand what acceleration is? Yes ma’am

So, are you ready for our quiz? Yes ma’am!

Okay kindly get, 1/2 crosswise. (Learners do their quiz)

(After the quiz)
Please pass your papers in the front. I’ll be the one who’ll check it. (Learners pass their papers in the front)
(After learners pass their papers)
What is acceleration class? Acceleration is defined as the change of
rate in speed and direction (velocity)

Yes very good. Describe the motion of a car? When the car speeds up, it’s accelerating. If
the car slows down, it’s decelerating while
if the car’s speed and direction never
change, it has a constant speed or constant
direction or constant velocity

Very good. What about the third question. Is the moon accelerating? Yes ma’am because it moves circularly,
therefore it changes direction

Yes very good, because the moon is moving in a circular path, so Yes ma’am
therefore the moon tends to change its direction. And because the moon
is changing it’s motion or changing it’s direction therefore it’s
accelerating. Are we clear class?

Very good. So for your assignment. Give me 3 scenarios that shows Yes ma’am
acceleration. Draw it in a short bond paper, take note draw, not printed.
Then explain at the bottom part why it shows acceleration. Are we clear?
Pass it tomorrow.

Questions about the assignment? No ma’am

Very good! Good bye class? Good bye ma’am

IV. Evaluation (1/2 crosswise)

1. Define Acceleration
2. Describe the motion of a car
3. Is the moon accelerating? Why or why not?

V. Assignment
In a short bond paper, draw three (3) things that shows acceleration. On the bottom part of the drawing, explain why
does it shows acceleration.
