In science, motion is defined as the change in position for a particular time interval. You can start
describing motion with a question ‘How far did the object travel. There are actually two ways to answer
the question. First, is by getting the total length of the path travelled by the object. The other way is by
measuring the distance between the initial position and the final position of the object

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

Good morning class! How was your sleep? Good morning ma’am. It was fine ma’am

Then good. May I request someone to lead the prayer. (Learners are praying)
(After praying)
Please be seated, who’s absent right now? (Collect assignments if (Learners do what their teacher says)
there’s any) Kindly pick up some pieces of paper, arrange your chairs.

Can anyone tell me, what did we do yesterday? We have an activity wherein we’ve
measure the path travelled from the
entrance up to the building assigned to
our group

Yes very good. You have measured the path travelled given to you The scale ma’am is 1m=1cm
from the entrance of the gate up to the designated building. Then you
write you data in a paper using the scale given which is. What is the
scale again?

Yes your right. So, is the activity easy or not? It’s easy ma’am but we find it hard
because it’s too hot

Ohhh, it’s okay at least you’ve enjoyed right? Yes ma’am

So, today just like what I have said yesterday that I will be going to
discussed to you the activity that you have done.

Remember that I told you that in describing motion, we can start with
a question ‘How far the object travel. There are two ways to answer
the question.

First is by getting the total length of the path travelled and the other
way is to measure the path travelled between the initial position to
the final position. So, to answer what I have been telling you, I have
here a diagram.

(Teacher will show a diagram)

As you can see, the ball travelled 10 meter east, then it travelled
again 5 meter west, then it travelled lastly to 10 meter west.

The question is, What is the total length of the path travelled by the 25 meters ma’am
ball?

Yes, 25 meters, because the question ask for the total length. So, this
question defines the Distance.
Distance refers to the length of the entire path that the object
travelled.
So therefore, the entire travel of the ball is 25 meters. All you need to Yes ma’am
do is to add the entire path travelled. Here in the diagram, we should
add 10 meters, 5 meters and 10 meters. Which result for 25 meters.
Understand?

Now, let’s go to the second way to answer the question which is the
path travelled between the initial position to the final position. It
means that it describe the shortcut route from the starting up to its
end line.

In this diagram, the measurement of the path travelled between the Yes ma’am
initial to the final position is 5 meters. To get this 5 meters, all you
need to do is to measure it using a ruler. It will result to a 5 cm.
Remember the scale that we use? Which is 1m=1cm, therefore 5 cm
is equivalent to 5 meters. Understand?

So, this second way which is the path travelled from the initial
position to the final position is called Displacement. Displacement
refers to the shortest distance between the objects two position, like
the distance between its point of origin and it’s point of destination. It
is also indicated with a direction.

So, 5 meters is not correct. Why? What’s lacking? The direction ma’am

Yes very good. The direction. So, let’s go back to the diagram. As you Because from it’s initial position up to it’s
can see the initial position is in the North while the final position is in final position, we can see that the path
the south. So therefore are displacement will be 5 meters to the that will be travelled through
South. Why south? displacement is south.

Yes very good. So are we clear class? Yes ma’am!

Very good! So, I’ll show you some diagrams, you’ll gonna tell me Yes ma’am
where is the distance and where is the displacement. Are we clear?

(Teacher will post a diagram in the board)

So, have you understand what is distance and displacement class? Yes ma’am

So another example class (Teacher will show another diagram and Zero (0) ma’am
post it on board) The total length covered in here is 36 meters. From
here which is the initial point up to here which is the final point. If the
distance is 36 meters what about the displacement?

Very good! Zero, as in nada, zero. Because remember right that Yes ma’am
displacement is the distance between the point of origin or the initial
position and its point of destination or the final position. But from
here we can see that the initial position is here as well as the final
position. Therefore the displacement is Zero (0). Understand class?

Why this diagram is zero (0) again? It’s because the position from the initial is
the same with the final position resulting
for a zero (0) displacement

Very good! Understand class? Yes ma’am

So, enough with these diagrams, let’s solved some problems. During a (Learners will solve the problem)
football practice, Juan runs 300 m east. Then he runs 200 m west.
Finally, he runs 50 m east again. What is Juan’s distance and
displacement?

What are the given class? 300 m east, 200 m west and 50 m east

So, let’s visualize (Teacher will draw in thee board of Juan’s running 550 meters ma’am
direction) This is Juan’s running direction. So, base from this, what
will be the total distance of Juan?

Very good. Distance is easy right because all you need to do is to add
all the units. What about the displacement? Anyone? You can try. (Learner will answer the question)
It is stated in here that Juan runs 300 m east, then he runs 200 m
west which means Juan goes back then he runs again 50 m east. 150 m ma’am
What will be the total displacement? Anyone?

Very good. As you can see, Juan runs east then he runs west again
which means we will subtract because he goes back right and then
Juan runs again back to the east which means we will add again.
Displacement= 300m-200m+50= 150 m
What’s lacking?
The direction ma’am
Yes, the direction. Which is?
East ma’am
150 m East. Why East and not west?

Very good, because it’s Juan final destination. Understand now?

Yes ma’am
Next.
Suppose that in going to school you walked 40 m east and 30 m
north. When you arrived in school, you found out that classes were Zero (0) ma’am
suspended because of bad weather. You went back home following
the same path. What was your total displacement?

Zero (0)? Why zero?

Because, of the word you wet back home
following the same path. Therefore the
initial and the final position is the same
which is the home ma’am
Very good, because as you can see it was stated in the problem that
you went back home following the same path. Take note of the word Yes ma’am
same path. So therefore, your displacement is zero. Understand?

Very good. Distance and Displacement is easy right?

Yes ma’am
Okay! Very good. Can anyone again differentiate what is distance and
displacement class? Distance is you only need to add all the
path travelled while the displacement is
the shortest distance of the object. And
also displacement involves direction
while Distance is not.
Very good. It seems that you really understand the lesson. Now!
What have you noticed about he distance and displacement in the I’ve noticed ma’am that Displacement
given examples. always follow a straight line while the
distance is not.

I’ve noticed ma’am that displacement

measures the length of the straight line
that connects the objects point of origin
and it’s point of destination while
Distance measures the length of the path
travelled by the object.
Very good. Can displacement be greater than distance? Why?
No, it can be shorter but it cannot be
greater than the distance.
Very good. Because displacement is the shortest length between the
object’s point of origin and its point of destination. Understand class? Yes ma’am

Very good. (Teacher will get an example of one of the student’s

output in the activity)

So any clarifications class?

No ma’am
Okay. So please, get 1/2 sheet of paper class.
This quiz will be 15 pts. (Learners will do their quiz)
1. Define what is Distance?
2. Define what is Displacement?.
3. Frederick walks 60 m due east. Realizing that he forgets his
book, he decided to go back to his house. He had travelled 45
m due west where he meets his brother carrying his book.
Getting the book from his brother, he turns east and walks his
way an additional distance of 60 m east.
Find (a) total distance Frederik walked and (b) his
displacement. Show your solution.

(After the quiz)

Exchange paper with your seatmate. Let’s check #3, I’ll be the one (Learner will write his/her solution in the
who will check #1 and #2. (Call a student) Write your solution in the board)
board.

Very good. The answer for (a) is 165m while for (b) is 75m East

Who got wrong for this?

Okay! Please pass your paper in the front. For your assignment, make
a roadmap which is My Home to School Roadmap. Obviously, a
roadmap from your home to the school. Please refer In your book,
page 174.

Don’t forget to take down notes the names of the roads, landmarks
establishments that you’ll pass by in getting here in school. More
points if your output is colored and neat.

Then don’t forget to answer the question (a) What is the total length
of your travel from your house to your school? And (b) What is the
total displacement of your travel?

The scale will be the 1cm= 1km. Understand? Write it in a bond Yes ma’am
paper. Also, for your another assignment, please bring a stopwatch
and a calculator for the next activity. Okay?

Good bye class! Good bye ma’am
