This article is about the infrared remote control switch by using simple components. This is simple and
easy to make even one can design it at home with simple parts. The main part of this on/off switch circuit
is IC 4017.

The remote control switch circuit construction

A remote control switch for controlling home appliances can be easily made using Decade Counter I.C
CD4017 and (any TSOP can be used) infrared receiver. This circuit can easily control your home
appliances. Any type of remote can be used to control this circuit like DVD, TV, CD player, and so on.

Stages of the remote control switch

This remote control switch consists of two stages input stage and output stage. Detail about the stages of the
remote control circuit is given below in detail.

Input Stage
The input stage of the remote control switch consists of bc 557 PNP transistor, TSOP 4.7k, resistor, and
100uf capacitor. As we press any key of remote a signal generates and drops on the IR receiver (TSOP).
TSOP trigger to bc557 and Bc 557 trigger to IC through pin 14 of IC 4017 (decade counter IC)

Output Stage

As IC Trigger through pin 14, a pulse generates on pin 2 of IC and remains on pin 2 till a new pulse. In this
way, BC 547 turned on and the relay also turned on through BC 547. As new pulse comes through input
stage pulse on pin 2 transfer to pin 3 and in this way, BC 547 turned off and relay also turn off.

List of Components for Remote control switch

I.C (CD4017)
6-volt relay
TSOP 1838
Transistor (BC547, Bc556)
100uf Capacitor
Resistors (1k, 4.7k, 100ohm)
Green LED for on status
Red LED for Off status

Working of the remote control switch

When firstly, power is applied I.C 4017(decade counter i.c), output at PIN 3 is HIGH as we press the button
of IR remote, then a LOW to HIGH clock pulse is applied to PIN 14 (first clock pulse) and output at pin
0(zero) becomes low and PIN 2 becomes HIGH. PIN 2 triggers the RELAY module, and the AC light
becomes ON.

Now this position will remain constant until the next clock pulse as we press the Button of the IR remote
again (second clock pulse), output at Q1 becomes LOW and Q2 becomes HIGH. This will deactivate the
Relay and switch off the light. Because Q2 is connected to the RESET pin(pin 15) of 4017, it will reset the I.C
and again output at Q 0(zero) becomes HIGH and Q 2 becomes LOW (initial state). So it works like a toggle
switch.

Recommendations
If you want to control this circuit using 12 volts DC then you should use 7812 Regulators and if you want to
operate it with 9 volts then use 7809 regulators. You can operate this circuit directly by using a mobile
charger.

BC 547 and Bc557 Transistor uses in remote circuit

In this remote control switch circuit, we have used a two-transistor with ic 4017. BC547 is an NPN bipolar
transistor and according to the law of electronics NPN transistor always operates with positive(+) voltages so,
as ic turned on a slight amount of current feeds the base of bc547. Due to the result of the base feeding
transistor turned on. The collector pin of the transistor is attached with a relay that is way relay also turned
on.

We have also used a bc557 transistor in this circuit between the sensor and 4017 ic. Transistor bc 557 is a
bipolar PNP device and it is operating using a negative current. As a signal pulse falls on the sensor the base
of bc557 receives a little amount of negative current and the collector pin of 557 connected with the feed pin
of counter ic 4017.
