5 Week Robotics Pre-Season Course

Weeks 1-3 Outline

Weekly Expectations:
Each week is divided into its own module. You may work through the module at your own pace,
however the module must be completed by Sunday of each week. Each module will consist of a
video introduction and mini syllabus that will walk you through the weekly expectations and
goals. Keep in mind that our goal for this course is that you come to our first Robotics meeting
with a basic understanding of the required vocabulary, coding processes, and Core Values.

Week 1 (8/23-8/27):
Introduction to First Lego League Robotics and Making Tough Choices

This week you will be learning about what First Lego League Robotics is, and why you
are taking this course before the meetings start. You will also investigate the SODA
method for decision making.

Start Here Module: Familiarize yourself with the structure of this course by reviewing
the syllabus and watching the introduction video.

Week 1 Module: Start by watching the weekly video, and reading the expectations
page.
1. Watch the Lego League Introductory Video for a brief introduction to First Lego
League Robotics.
a. Take the video quiz to check what you learned in the video.
2. Watch the Kid President video on Making Tough Choices.
a. Fill out the “Would you rather?” Google form.
3. Answer the essay questions on using the SODA method for decision making.
4. Discussion: After getting an introduction to First Lego League Robotics this week, share
with us what aspect of being on the Robotics Team you are most excited about.

Week 2 (8/30-9/3): Vocabulary

It is important that all team members understand coding terms and First Lego League
vocabulary, and be able to use them appropriately. This week you will be learning and practicing
many important vocabulary words that will be used throughout the Robotics season.
Week 2 Module: Start by watching the weekly video, and reading the expectations
page.
1. Coding Vocabulary
a. Watch the Block Coding video.
b. Discussion: Share 3 new coding terms and their meaning that you
learned from the video.
2. Coding Vocabulary
a. With a teammate, use Google slides to create a slideshow presentation
defining the 10 assigned coding vocabulary terms.
3. Robot Game Vocabulary
a. Watch the vocabulary terms video.
b. Play the vocabulary Kahoot! game.

Week 3 (9/7-9/10): Core Values

Core Values are an essential aspect of FLL teamwork and competition, but what exactly are
they? This week’s module will walk you through each of the Core Values and how they relate to
the overall ideas of Gracious Professionalism and Coopertition.

Week 3 Module: Start by watching the weekly video, and reading the expectations
page.

1. Inclusion: We respect each other and embrace our differences.

2. Discovery: We explore new skills and ideas.


a. Discussion: What is something new you tried this summer? It could be a
new sport, new food, visited a new city or state. Why is it important to try
new things? How do you feel when you try something new?
3. Teamwork: We are stronger when we work together.
a. Watch the Youtube video on Teamwork.
b. Take the video quiz sharing examples of good teamwork and bad
teamwork from the video.
4. Innovation: We use creativity and persistence to solve problems.
5. Impact: We apply what we learn to improve our world.
