EXAMINING AND RESPONDING TO THE TEXT

1. Love of country / Patriotism

~ My idolized Country, for whom I most gravely pine,
Dear Philippines, to my last goodbye, oh, harken
There I leave all: my parents, loves of mine,
I’ll go where there are no slaves, tyrants or hangmen
Where faith does not kill and where God alone does reign.

2. Farewell, my adored Land, region of the sun caressed,

Pearl of the Orient Sea, our Eden lost,
With gladness I give you my Life, sad and repressed;
And were it more brilliant, more fresh and at its best,
I would still give it to you for your welfare at most.

3. He adores the beautiful country that he and others are fighting for. He wants his fellowmen to pray for
others who also have died and suffered for the country. In the last part of Mi Ultimo Adios, he said “In
Death there is rest!” which means that he, being ready to be executed, is happy to die in peace.

4. Let the burning sun the raindrops vaporize

And with my clamor behind return pure to the sky;
Let a friend shed tears over my early demise;
And on quiet afternoons when one prays for me on high,
Pray too, oh, my Motherland, that in God may rest I.

5. To the Filipino Youth Unfold, oh timid flower! Lift up your radiant brow, This day, Youth of my native
strand! Your abounding talents show Resplendently and grand, Fair hope of my Motherland! The first
line, "unfold, oh timid flower," implies that the youth is silent, maybe daunted, and consequently has not
yet gone into full bloom for whatever reason there is that may have silenced them. In the beginning
stanza, Rizal encourages the youth, by telling them to hold their heads high for they possess talents and
skills and abilities that would make their country proud.

NOTING AND APPRECIATING LITERARY CRAFTSMANSHIP

1. Rizal bids his farewell not only for his country but also for his family and loved ones;
Farewell, parents, brothers, beloved by me,
Friends of my childhood, in the home distressed;
Give thanks that now I rest from the wearisome day;
Farewell, sweet stranger, my friend, who brightened my way;
Farewell, to all I love. To die is to rest.;
Because they are the most important part of Rizal`s life.

2. As a literary device, diction refers to the linguistic choices made by a writer to convey an idea or point of
view, or tell a story, in an effective way. The author’s selection of words or vocabulary and the artistic
arrangements of these words is what constitutes the style and establishes the voice of a literary work..
The words associated with a literary character represent their ideals, values, and attitudes. Diction can
create a representation of a character’s outer appearance and/or inner state of mind for the reader.
