Solving Linear Equations using Substitution Method

 Proceduralizing

Step 1. Label one equation A and the other B. If there are three (3) equations, the third
equation will be the C.
Step 2. Solve equation B for y.
Step 3. Looking at the latest form of equation B, substitute y’s equivalent expression of x in
place of y in equation A.
Step 4. Solve the latest form of equation A for x. This value of x is part of the simultaneous
solution for the system of equations A and B.
Step 5. Substitute the value of x in place of x in equation B, and simplify to get the value of y.
Step 6. The calculated values of x and y represents the solution of the system of equations A
and B. Substitute the x and y values into the original equations A and B, and verify that
the ordered pair (x, y) is a simultaneous solution to both equations.

Example: 2x – y +4 = 0 and 4x + y = 8

Step 1. Label one equation A and the other B. If there are three (3) equations, the third
equation will be the C.
2x – y +4 = 0 (A)
4x + y = 8 (B)

Step 2. Solve equation B for y.

4x + y = 8 this will be…
y = 8 – 4x This is the latest form of B.

Step 3. Looking at the latest form of equation B, substitute y’s equivalent expression of x in
place of y in equation A.
y = 8 – 4x
2x – y +4 = 0 Now, we will substitute 8 – 4x to y.
2x – (8 – 4x) + 4 = 0

Step 4. Solve the latest form of equation A for x. This value of x is part of the simultaneous
solution for the system of equations A and B.
2x – (8 – 4x) + 4 = 0
2x – 8 + 4x + 4 = 0 Combine similar terms.
6x – 4 = 0 Use APE (Addition Property of Equality)
6x = 4 Divide both sides by 6.

Step 6. The calculated values of x and y represents the solution of the system of equations A
and B. Substitute the x and y values into the original equations A and B, and verify that
the ordered pair (x, y) is a simultaneous solution to both equations.
