MODULE 7

ON HERITAGE: T’BOLI FOLK LITERATURE

APPLICATION

1.) Choose a part of your body (with a distinctive quality, eg., brown eyes) and
compose a short myth of 150 words about it.

The Ears that won’t listen

One upon a time in a faraway land lived a girl named Cindy. She was vivacious
and likes to go around playing with her neighbors. A lot of people liked her for her good
looks that are all in perfect proportion, and her parents are proud of her excellence at
school. However, because of all the praises she received growing up, she became
boastful and proud. She would not listen to her parents’ advice or the lectures of the
elderly, which was all for her own good. One day, when she was on her way to go play
with her neighbors, her mother told her to stay at home because a witch who curses kids
was roaming around in their land. But she shrugged it off and did not listen. A witch upon
seeing her behavior cursed her. Her once perfectly proportioned ears have now become
elongated like a witches’ ears.

2.) Discuss the values your myth is suggesting.

Every person has been gifted with either beauty, talent, fame, or wealth. But,
however beautiful, talented, rich, or grand our life is we should always have the mind to
respect the authority of the elderly. We should never become too proud because nobody
is perfect. It is important that we listen to our parents’ advice, or to the elderly because
they have more experience in life than us. After all, what our parents want is for our
good. Also, we should never become boastful, and always remember to keep our feet on
the ground. Humility is one of the greatest traits one can possess.
Folktale

1.) Do we see these kinds of people depicted in the story in our midst? How do you respond
to them?
In our day-to-day lives, we encounter different kinds of people. Good, bad, and
neutral. Among these people, there are like Monkey, and there are also like Turtle. I
have encountered many Monkeys in my life, those who will take advantage of you just
because they think they are more entitled. Those people take advantage of their wealth,
beauty, and fame to undermine others. Usually, I do not confront nor associate myself
with these people, not because I am afraid but because I do not want conflict. On the
other hand, I treasure people like Turtle. And I can say I have been surrounding myself
with these kinds of people. My friends, the people I know that do not take success by
seeing others suffer, people who are ready to lend a helping hand, and take life
challenges positively. These Turtles, who are not cowards but are intelligent enough not
to stoop down to a Monkey’s level have a good influence and take a great part in my life.
And I personally, choose to engage myself with these kinds of people.
