DRILL: Review

● How do you know if an object

is moving?

● What do you use to determine

if the object is in motion?
MOTIVATION: Pre-discussion
● How do people know how far they have traveled?
● Is it important to know how to measure lengths and
distances?
● Long time ago, people had to use their own body
parts to measure things. However, since everyone
had different sizes of body parts like feet or hands,
not everyone understood and measured the size or
distance of objects in the same way.
DISCUSSION: Presentation
Let us do some measurements to see what we need to do
exactly when we measure distances and lengths.
1. Using your foot as a unit of length, measure the length
and the width of your living room.
2. Using your hand span as a unit of length, measure the
length and the width of your dining table.
3. Using your thumbnail as a unit of length, measure the
length and the width of a short bond paper.
4. Record you answer in your Science notebook.
ENRICHMENT: Think & Write
● Are all of the measurements for the living room using a
human’s foot as a unit of measurement, equal?
Explain your answer.

● Is everybody’s measurement by hand span the same?

Explain your answer.

● What is needed so that the measurement does not change

from person to another person?
GENERALIZATION:

Brainy Challenge

● What is needed to get an accurate

measurement of distance?
ASSIGNMENT: (FOR MONDAY)

● measuring tape or meter stick
● tape measure
