Title: Study of the Performance of over current relays with IDMT characteristics.
Theory:
To have a properly operating circuit, current flow should be confined to a safe level. This safe
level of current is determined by the current handling capability of the load, conductors,
switches, and other system components. Under normal operating conditions, the current in a
circuit should be equal to or less than the normal current level. However, at times an electrical
circuit may have a higher-than-normal current flow (over current). Over current protection
protects electrical power systems against excessive currents which are caused by short circuits,
ground faults, etc. Over current relays can be used to protect practically any power system
elements, i.e. transmission lines, transformers, generators, or motors.
• The protection should not operate for starting currents, permissible over current, current
surges. To achieve this, the time delay is provided (in case of inverse relays).
• Discrimination by both ‘Time’ and ‘Current’. The relay operation time is inversely
proportional to the fault current.
• Inverse Time relays are also referred to as Inverse Definite Minimum Time (IDMT) relay.
• The operating time of an over current relay can be moved up (made slower) by adjusting the
‘time dial setting’. The lowest time dial setting (fastest operating time) isgenerally 0.5 and the
slowest is 10.
• It gives inverse time current characteristics at lower values of fault current anddefinite time
characteristics at higher values
• An inverse characteristic is obtained if the value of plug setting multiplier is below 10, for
values between 10 and 20 characteristics tend towards definite time characteristics.
• Widely used for the protection of distribution lines.
Apparatus:
• IDMT Relay
• Current Injector
• Clamp Meter
• Stop Watch
Discussion & Conclusion: In this analysis we have presented with the various kinds of over
current assurance plans. Among them we momentarily examined about the over current transfers
with IDMT qualities. In power framework there are two sorts of assurance exist. One is 'Over load'
and another is 'Over current'. In this lab we have learned about the over current security
frameworks. To stay away from this sort of issue we need a transfer and this hand-off is known as
over current hand-off. An over flow hand-off is an electrical security gadget intended to remove
the force supply to a circuit, apparatus, or machine in case of an over-burden or disappointment.
These gadgets regularly comprise of a manual electrical switch or contactor and a flow detecting
hand-off which interlocks with it. As we doing this lab in online that’s why we are unable to
implement in hardware, But our honorable faculty shows a video how to measure, and our
concept become clear.
